I pulled out an oldie but goodie and just completed playing the old Avalon Hill game of D-Day, using the 1977 rules.

World in Flames, Vassal and face to face with a group of 5
Where did you get the VASSAL module?

Is it a complete module?

Always wanted to learn this game, and I see VASSAL as the only way.

Thanks! For some reason I missed the WiF module. Or maybe I did not think it was done/complete.

Or maybe I am totally lost:D

Peace

Roger
You did find it in that link didn't you?

It is listed under "World in Flames"?

Or am I all wet?

Hi Derf,

So far I only had time to play one patrol mission but I will be definitely going back. I want to finish all the patrols and the progress from smaller operations until the full campaign. I like the game, actually I believe it's more of a simulation than a game. Yeah the first patrol I played my torpedoes suck as well and I don't like surface combat as it's very dangerous. In my first patrol I sunk 3 merchants but not enough tonnage to complete the mission. I just finished watching U-boat director's cut movie and finished book as well called Iron Coffins so I'm in some mood for some U-boat action :)

I would suggest you buy Imperial Japanese Navy expansion pack for Silent War, it adds a bit more depth to the game and brings the game close to Steel Wolves from gameplay/rules perspective. Here is a pretty cheap price:

Thanks Jaguar

I have IJN it is a big addition to Silent War. I also recommend down loading the War at Sea soundtrack great music to play while i'm hunting Japanese ship.

Been looking at Steel Wolf's may have to put it on my christmas list.

Thanks

I mean in the past when I was looking for the WiF module. There was a time it was not on the VASSAL site and I lost track of it.

Sorry for the confusion, I did find it!

Thanks!

Thanks!

I am thinking of giving Silent War a go as my next solo project, seriously considering the Japanese Navy Expansion.....

Peace

Great game - you need to include IJN - it's a must for any history buff that would rather shoot at named shipped rather then generic ships.

There are a few cool items special items in Silent Wars the US get a Seawolf sub that you can play a "Final Countdown" kind of event - (helpful to your eago as the US sub commander - as the early modifier for the early US Torpedos will mean you will take alot of shots and have few hits) there also is the Leviathan. Based on the Greman cruiser subs the US planned for this bad boy to be built in 1923 and is set up in a hypothetical campaign. There is also the Surcouf and rule that lets the US take the catured U-2513 (XXI) out for a war trial.

I have Steel Wolves at home - I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

Played 2 games of Carcassonne (with multiple expansions) over the weekend with my wife. 1-1, honours even.

On the Settlers of Catan debate, I don't tend to enjoy Settlers much (I often find it quite frustrating), although I acknowledge its undoubted role in popularising a new form of gaming. Cities and Knights is more my speed, although more complex and less accessable for very casual gamers or as an introductory game.

Thanks!

I need to get the IJN expansion........ I might do a couple of patrols to ensure its my thing, but you are right, named ships seems pretty cool instead of generic.

The doubling cube mitigates the luck greatly. You never play one game to decide anything, it is always a match to some set number of points...

Steve
I know...I played a lot in college. Had a group of Iranian and Pakistani guys that were excellent, we played almost every day in the student union. These guys were no slouches...trust me, I know how to play Backgammon...bring a set to Albany, and some cash and we can play a bit if you want.

I also play about once a week at the Embassy of Turkey in DC, they are a client and when I go out there, we have a regular group who play each other for a couple of hours...they play every day, lol.

What I was stating, or meant to state, in my original post was that a single game of Backgammon can be very luck dependent...that is why matches are played with first to point wins the match...and why doubling cubes are used...and why there are so many rules on how and when you can double.

Carcassonne and Scrabble are the last two non-ASL games I've played. A year or so ago I was playing GDW's Assault / Boots & Saddles, which was great fun to dust off.
