While visiting the in-laws in South Bend, IN I found The Griffon Bookstore in downtown South Bend.

Awesome collection of games for sale, including new and used, and running the gamut of board games, RPGs and miniatures. Actually consists of 4 stories. The basement was full of military history books and tons of soldier miniatures.

It was a little light on ASL, but had the RB for sale.

Upstairs were rooms available for gaming that they allow some trusted patrons to have access too.

Friday night, not much was going on, but Saturday my son and I stopped back in and met some of the trusted patrons. Great group of guys, who had been to the 19-1 club in Indianapolis.

Andrew and I ended up playing "Balloon Cup" and "Metro" as 2 player games, and lamented the fact we didn't have more time to setup Rune Wars.

If you ever happen to be in South Bend over a weekend I highly recommend you drop by the store.

This weekend I played Pandemic/On the Brink 4 times. Small World once.Agricola once, and a scen from Under the Lilly Banners,but it was a teaching game.Played Cod MW3 on the XBox 360.

Lock N Load Heroes of the Gap--saw this and realized this was the WW3 tactical game I've been waiting for.Reminds me of many of the WW3 novels I read many years ago (such as Red Army by Ralph Peters,Team Yankee and Sword Point by Coyle,Clancy's Red Storm Rising,and Larry Bond's The Cauldron.) Always wanted to game out the Soviet attempt to seize+hold the German town of Hameln that was described in Red Army,and this game should allow me to do it.

Also learning GMT's Downtown as well as LNL Forgotten Heroes as wanting to game out some Vietnam battles as well.

Pretty good in my very inexperienced opinion. It is the first card/area movement game I've played. It is more a hybrid deck building game played in the framework of a map/graph system(? parroting back things that I've read but do not really know about). I've only played it maybe 6 times in 2x visits to Wyoming. Like I said, I'm new to the genre so I could be full of it.

There is noise on BGG of a "can't lose" British Strategy. That has worked so far in our playings but it is not clear to me yet that there is no French counter to that strategy. We'll probably be playing a lot more during our gaming binge the weekend of 12/9 and we'll be able to see if between the three of us we can come up with a counter.

Mainly some World at War stuff, dabbling in Heroes of the Gap (both L'n'L). I have a liking for WW3 tactical, still have all GDW's Assault series games. The end of the SU spoilt the market for that genre, much to my disgust.

Sounds like an attempt at conceptual synergy here.

I'll venture to say that even if this particular game does not endure, there will be some trails blazed for future designs.

I agree. F*cking late-80s Politburo milktoasts, who sold out to the Capitalist-monarchist lackeys with their Glasnost and Perestroika. Any Politburo worth its salt would have crushed Solidarity, nuked the Afghans off the map, put tanks on the streets of Prague, Budapest, Warsaw and any other sh*thole that failed to see the benefits of State Socialism, and gone back to a rigidly 5-year-planned economy with an emphasis on massive infrastructure, tank production and sending Communist monkeys to Mars.

Thereby preserving the wargaming sub-genre of fanciful Soviet assaults on W Germany throught the Fulda Gap.

Gorbachov has a lot to answer for.

Tried to rep you for that, but failed. Yes, we can look fondly back to the days of the US assisting the heroic Afghan freedom fighters ... <cough> eh, um ... Taliban terrorists in their struggle aga..., oh, forget it!

I think I will reread Harold Coyle's "The Ten Thousand" to cook up some US vs. West German action.

Spencer, I beg to differ. Next time we're at a tourney together let's get a game together. Settler's is by no means a crap game, and if you think its always easy to win, I'd suggest you try playing some better players.

I prefer the advanced version of Cities and Knights, but even the base game played at a high level is a very competitive challenge.
