Total PW’s for to-day is 86.
Assuming they are using the standard UTM 1:50,000 scale map (more than likely given the ranges noted and the distance traveled in the time allotted, 1-2 km or hundreds of yds [hard to determine]), the attacks seem to be going in from East to West. If Apeldoorn is the largest city in the area you could possibly check for that map sheet reference or the largest city in that area. With the 100,000 grid square identifier being MR it should be in the center/slightly-lower-portion of the larger map sheet, and right hand portion because of the 85 thru 82 references of the 1:50,000 map. JMHO.

[NOTE: I've forgotten more than I ever knew about military maps, especially the MR reference, so take it this with a grain of salt. Others are probably up on this a bit better].

It was not uncommon to use 1:25000 maps, but yes, the Canadians were clearing western Netherlands from east to west.

McMaster has a partial collection:

1:250,000 would possibly be used for an infantry unit or in Normandy/Scheldt-area where movement was not at a premium. However, at Bn/Rgt HQ level and use by armored units (use of tanks noted) in a fast developing battle where movement may be over several km in a short period, my bet would be a 1:50,000 scale. :cautious::unsure:

Royal 22e was an infantry unit. I'll take a look through some war diary extracts but I've always assumed the maps were from the 1:25,000 series. Interestingly, McMasters' collection of WWII maps doesn't have 1:50,000 at all:

Note that the AAR above is from the unit war diary. It's possible the battle was planned on a different scale map, the war diarist would probably not have been one of the planners of the battle (I believe it was usually the unit adjutant with rear battalion HQ). But I expect he was using the same map that was used for reporting during the action.

Here's an image of the South Saskatchewan Regiment War Diary for April 1945. It references Map sheet 2705 (left column) and above is a scan of that map sheet, scale at upper left and map sheet ref at top right.

Perhaps the 1:50.000 scale became the more standard issue maps with the creation of NATO? I'm not totally familiar with WW-II era military maps other than they still used the UTM grid identifiers and I didn't notice the scale of maps usually encountered. I suppose for a large military force in war time the issue of thousands if not millions of map sheets across several nations, the 1:25,000 scale probably worked well enough as a unit standard. I really like reviewing that kind of stuff though as I was formerly the Regimental Historian for the 128th Inf Regt, 32nd Div and did quite a bit of research that also included old maps (both WW-I & WW-II). Wish I could remember some of the particulars of their presentation but at my age I'm just glad that I remember doing it. Nice stuff Michael!?

You may be right, I do know the Germans often used 1:50,000 maps but possibly because they didn't have anything better. Operational level planning in World War II seems to have been done as you say on larger scale - a division would probably move on 1:50,000 or even 1:100,000 maps.

I have some US Army ETO maps that are 1:25,000 and some city plans that are 1:7,500 or 1:10,000 - you must be aware of the University of Texas website

Lots of good wartime maps there

The US series of 1:50,000 is here:

I don't see 1:25,000 listed. Perhaps the Brits and US pooled their mapping resources. I have a friend who was a warrant officer in the Mapping and Charting Establishment of the Royal Canadian Engineers until he retired a few years ago. I suppose I could ask him. His basement is a warehouse of wartime goodies and he's published a number of histories and war-related articles.

Love maps also - the 32nd seem to have a unique history, particularly if they fought in New Guinea....I wonder how useful their maps were?

If you have read Ghost Mountain Boys (highly recommended, but somewhat self serving on my part) they said it was just noted "Mountains Here" for the interior except for the Kokoda track sketch maps made by the Aussies that had a little more detail to them. Beyond a few hundred yards from the shore or the Port Moresby or other built up areas very little was recorded prior to the war about the topography of much of Papua in particular and New Guinea in general. I'm now involved as a committee chairman with the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division Veterans Association and since our partnership & joint ventures with the 7th Australian Infantry Division's Veterans Association perhaps I'll be getting back into that sort of thing; heavens knows I've certainly got the time to commit to it now.

I'll add it to my wishlist on Amazon - I'm currently writing a regimental history of my own and desperately trying to stay on track, but once the project is done, I'll look forward to it.
