It was no surprise at all really. Intelligence reports had been coming in for some weeks, indicating that activity was taking place on the Soviet side of the line. Preparations for an offensive, or at least a probe or recon in force, were under way. Those of us who worked at HQ 15th Regiment had held some hope that the Christmas Solstice would be observed. A day spent in rest, a Christmas meal, and some Carols sung low, muffled by the snow, while we reflected upon the glories of the Wehrmacht in 1942, and what 1943 might hold for us. Maybe even a toast if Schmidt in supply has squirreled away any schnapps. But it was not to be. These heathen Bolsheviks are swine, and have purposely chosen to violate this holiest of Holy Days.

Well before dawn, before the first streaks of winter light crease the horizon, reports of contact come in from Battalion OPs. From Skabitschejewo down through Dubki, and Wladimirskoje, the listening posts report columns of Red Army conscripts, moving in massive, albeit ragged, formations. Evidence of military training is in scant evidence, indeed, not all formations appear to even be fully armed, as they trudge remorselessly forward, driven by the curses and shouts of their heartless Commissars.

West of Wladimirskoje, near Point 232, our Security detachments laid in wait for the arrival of the Soviet irregulars. Ersatz formations of peasants and laborers, pressed into service as spies and provocateurs, were reported to be moving through this area in an effort to infiltrate our rear areas. Abwehr agents had informed us of the plans, and Soviet defectors had confirmed it, and the trap was skillfully laid. In the end the toll paid by these irregulars was high, as wave after wave of them were mowed down, creating a curious Red Snow effect on the ground.

Soviet communications, as must always be the case in such backwards stunted societies as Bolshevism produces, must be poor. If this is not the case, than the logic applied by the Red Army is beyond our keen, as the regular formations plod on, oblivious to the fate of their irregulars. Perhaps it is neither. Is it possible that they believe that their shoddy armor, produced in factories by unmotivated forced labor, using deficient materials, can withstand the punch of our tungsten capped high velocity shells, fired from Kruppstahl encased Panzers?

There are those in the Wehrmacht who whisper that it is impossible for us to win the war now that America and the Soviet Union are aligned with England. And maybe there is truth to what they say. But if the Wehrmacht be beaten some day, it is far off in that future, and it is not this night, and it is not this Regiment.
