16 Sept - Day Turn 7
GE receives 2xStuka this turn. No RU RE (for a change)

KG1
Once again, the Stuka's prove ineffective against the armour of the KV-1, where as the OBA gets a hull hit on the recently activated T34 (X4) and immobilizes before it can do anything.
16744
KG1 continues to consolidate their positions, with the 3x Lt Mtr crews (double timing from K5 in the previous turn) moving into the warehouse and picking up the dropped RU MMG before advancing into U4 to support the adjacent HS in V3.
16743
KG2
The Stosstruppe members of KG2 have advanced past Smolenskaya up to Respublicskaya, while just south of them stubborn RU units in T23/24 hold up the 8-1 stack. The southern elements of the Kampfgruppe have continued to alternate PANIC (first the HMG, then MMG, etc) for the past few turns, ever since they lost their leader in Turn 1/2, and the trend continues. This prevents any forward movement beyond their initial starting positions, but overall the KG has done well to gain vital ground.
16745
KG3
A 458 that had gone berserk, charged across the street towards R36 during its MPh, when it got blasted point blank by the StuG G who rolled a snake eyes on the IFT, producing a 3KIA.
16746
Despite their best efforts, PINNING and PANIC have prevented GE MMC from moving into the R31/S32 block of houses, while the lone MMG has been spending the last few turns trying to break/suppress RU MMC in T32. Meanwhile, the assault pioneers have crossed Ostrowskaya into the ground floor of the Univermag, and are able to withstand all RU fire poured their way, including a 45LLAT gun that popped up adjacent, in T38.
16747
KG4
Due to the RU presence in the R43 building and down the line, no GE units have been able to cross the street, except for the southern most stack which, forcing the RU MG stack in R48 to rout away, were able to cross the street and occupy their former positions. Alot of the broken RU had rallied in this turn, but they were unable to contribute to the battle.

18 Sept - German Assault Battle Plan
16755
As per the 16th of Sept Plan, this day will be broken down into four Kampfgruppe to deal with the four primary lines of advance.

KG1
KG1 has two objectives; the north wing will exploit the northern map edge to the Volga and then support the effort to the south, while the main thrust will be towards Block1. A platoon of pioneers will first deal with the KV1 to their front, and then proceed to clear B1. A battery of Battalion 80+ MTR is directly attached to help reduce Russian pockets and provide SMOKE on call to support assault across the streets.
16756
KG2
KG2 will begin reducing the adjacent RU presence, until they are reinforced by Rifle Coy 10 coming from offboard. Once they are in place, KG2 will begin to push into Block 2 and 3. Their attack will be preceded by an Aerial Bombardment (target hex is Y20). Recce has revealed that there are two dug-in KV1's IVO KG2, which will have to be quickly dealt with before they can cause havoc in the German ranks. Enemy resistance is expected to be high.
16757
KG3
Enemy resistance is expected to be the stiffest in this sector. There are many fortified locations, guns, and elite troops facing the German forces, though the GE have gained a tentative toehold in the Univermag building. The primary objective in Block 5 is to take and hold the Univermag, and the strongpoint immediately north of it. The thrust will then turn northward to clear up to the south edge of KG2. OBA in the form of 100+ is directly attached, albeit with Scarce Ammo, as well as an Aerial Bombardment (target hex V35) that will precede the attack.
16758
KG4
This Kampfgruppe is also facing stiff resistance in Block 6, but it must be overcome. Once Block 6 is cleared and controlled, the southern elements will push the map-edge eastward to block 7, while the main thrust will advance across Pushkinskaya.

Tough dice...maybe they should call it a killed stack.

It’s amazing how often random selection picks the leader.

Definitely the biggest damage dealer in the GE Turn 1, and is why I'm going keep on tracking sniper (and CC) kills to see how bad it gets.

On the plus side, during the RU MPh, my second (of two) stuka gets a 3KIA on the 1st level fortified building hex (T36), rubbling it...:D:D:D

18 Sept - Turn 1

A lot to cover here, hopefully not TLDR, but first some levity...

Pre-Start
Two aerial bombardments, are a hit...get it...a hit :p
16778

KG1
First shot of the scenario, was the 75L firing AP into the dug-in KV1, which scoring a turret hit kills the vehicle, but the crew survives...not for long however, as 3x838's advance into the hex, gain ambush and kill the 426/Crew in H-to-H. Other GE fire is effective as well, and does a good job of breaking RU MMC, including the Btln Mtr OBA which lands on target and breaks more MMC. During the RU turn, unfortunately, many GE units in the North PANIC and can't contribute to the battle. But things are shaping up for the Germans in this sector. Note the wrong colour acquisition used by the 50L AT gun against K3.
16779
KG2
The highlight of the Kampfgruppe is the destruction, again by ambush, of the two KV1's in this sector by two groups of Stosstruppe, one of which is turned to a burning wreck. Unfortunately, one stack of GE that was probing its way forward all break and are forced to retreat away, due to the 45L AT gun and the 426 in the fortified V20. On the plus side, the intense GE fire has pushed out RU units occupying two other fortified buildings, which are now occupied by the Germans. Finally, Rifle Coy 10 has entered the battlefield and is making their way, double-timing, forward; they should be in place by Turn 3 to contribute to clearing their objectives.
16780
KG3
As expected, the fighting is fiercest in this sector, though the three ground-level locations of the Univermag on Ostrowskaya are taken by the assault pioneers. The quantity of potential GE MMC in this building was greatly dampened by the loss of a nearby stack of pioneers (one with a FT as well) and a leader (R39) which was rendered combat ineffective by a single sniper attack - my 6th shot of the entire game. First the 9-1 gets taken out, and the corresponding LLMC breaks all three 838's (two of which are broken into two HS ea). Further RU DFPh reduces the stack to 1x838, 3xHS all broken which are forced to rout away to safety. This leaves the one pioneer platoon, which had to spend its turn and the next staying concealed to avoid being overwhelmed by the adjacent RU DFPh. Two 468's tried to dash across the street and join the battle, but one was broken by the appearance of a 426/MMG up the street, and the other PINNED by the same. It is adjacent to S37, so should be able to reinforce the pioneers efforts in Turn 2.

The damage endured to the pioneer platoon was mitigated when, during the RU MPh, a sharp-eyed stuka pilot saw the berserk 458 making its way from the second level (T36) to the ground level where it intended to try and break the adjacent 838 (in T37). Though his attack broke some of the RU units, it was the second stuka pilot that struck a solid hit on the same building, rubbling the 1st and 2nd levels, and killing the berserk unit and the other broken RU on the second level. Other GE fire was able to break more RU and push them away from the front, so if the pressure can be maintained it should look good for a subsequent push across the street into the Univermag.

Unfortunately, the 100mm+ OBA has not had an impact yet, though its spotting rounds are landing close to its intended target and I will adjust and convert to FFE in Turn 2. I should have bought a battery of Rocket OBA :)
16783
KG4
Here too, the battle is tough, though a platoon of pioneers has taken over the ground floor of building R43. Concentrated GE PFPh was able to break any RU opposition (except for a cellar-dwelling 426), and the presence of the pioneers forced the RU units to move up and away from them. More MG fire during the DFPh eliminated the broken RU in 2S45, however a brave 458 entered CC with the CX'd 838 in S45, and killed it via ambush. Two 838s still occupy a position in the building however as a toe hold.

South of that battle, a stack of 468's was PINNED in the street outside the just-revealed fortified R46 (both levels) and the troops there in, including a 76*INF, though it would prove ineffective. Other GE fire was able to break the opposing RU troops, so entry can be made into that block of buildings. Meanwhile, the south anchor of the KG is doing a good job of breaking adjacent RU units and forcing them to Low Crawl to safety.

The Russians did score an Artillery Strike on their PFPh, but is landed marginally off-board and didn't effect any GE troops.

18 Sept - Turn 2
GE gets three Stuka's this turn, and the RU get no RE this turn.
KG1
Block 1 is slowly being reduced, though the pioneers have taken the brunt of the damage with two squads having to retreat broken. The third is berserk, and locked in H-to-H with a 458 that advanced into CC with it. The Btln Mtr OBA is doing a good job harassing the RU in the FFE and preventing them from moving if nothing else. While the northern elements have reached the ridgeline overlooking the Volga, however there are a couple of Russian holdouts on the crestline that PINNED two more MMC from pushing eastward. One of the three stukas made a bomb run on Z10, where a 458 trying to escape the adjacent artillery, was caught in the blast full on, while the rest of the RU stack there broke.
16794
KG2
KG2 is facing stiff opposition with many RU units moving towards the frontline locations and taking up forward positions (I ignored the Action DR if it said Fire and they had no target; I moved them forward instead). This action by the enemy is potentially threatening as only a few GE MMC are in position to try and prevent any collapse (especially in the north of the Kampfgruppe). Also, the one 37L AT gun has broken under fire, and the crew is taking constant fire from a GUN across the street, a 45L AT gun. The imminent arrival of Rifle Coy 10 cannot come soon enough.
16795
KG3
The opposition facing KG3 has dwindled to the point, that the MG stack in R36 will have to find other positions, likely the Univermag in Turn 3. Accurate GE fire has reduced the RU presence in this building to hex U39, all of which are broken, and hemmed in by the 100m OBA landing immediately behind and on them. The FT wielding 838 was forced to take a step back, but other MMC (1x468, 1x 248) have entered the Univermag, and the HS will likely spend the next few turns claiming locations in the building, while the full-squads do the clearing. The FOO attached to this KG has PANICED in the RU turn, and therefore was unable to adjust his artillery, but he should be able to gain radio contact again next turn. However, two stukas were able to zero in on U39, though one did fail its sighting TC, and the one that did hit scored a solid hit on the hex.
16797
Meanwhile, the northern elements, once also facing immense opposition have been able to break most of the RU squads facing them and should be in good position to continue bringing good effective fire on them.
16796
KG4
The 9-2 led MG stack in 1P44, has done an excellent job, due to very high ROF, enabling it too break many RU squads in many locations, including getting a 3KIA on the stack in 2S45 when it rolled snake eyes. This helped clear the way for Kampfgruppe 4 to gain solid footing in Block 6, with a single 628 holding up in S44.
16798
The southern elements of the Kampfgruppe had to spend a good deal of their Defensive Fire trying to eradicate the berserk 628 that would have entered CC with the adjacent GE MMC's. But with the destruction of the squad, they will be in position to support efforts into Block 7.

I'd have to put down most of the GE CVP to the bombardments, stuka and good rates of fire from several MG groups. Russian MMC just can't stand up to the 29-32FP being dished out their way.

18 Sept - Turn 3
No stukas for the Germans this turn, nor any artillery strikes or RE for the Russians.
Aside from that, as previously posted, the GE turn started off fantastic with a lot of low rolls, including 4 snake eyes during the RPh, 3 for the Russians and 1 for the Germans. One AT gun got 5 or 6 hits before missing, doing a heck of a lot of damage, and another, with the first shot of the games gets a 1KIA.
16826
KG1
There is now a strong German presence in Block1, with a depleted platoon of pioneers in the North, and a platoon of 468's entering from the West. Meanwhile, the 80+ Btln Mtr continues to prevent most RU movement for fear of incurring more IFT checks, while AT guns and MG stack continue to do a good job hammering the RU. A lone 236 and the Sdkfz 10/5 are probing the Northmap edge, clearing out S? and have entered the low ground around the Volga. Unfortunately this draws a sniper which breaks the HS and forces it too retreat. The berserk pioneer HS (X6) stuck in melee with an 838 against a lone RU 458, rolls a 12 in H-to-H and the RU decides to retreat back a hex, saving it for now. During the RU APh, the 458 and a berserk 447 re-enter CC and destroy the GE units, but are killed in turn. Other GE troops in the form of a RU MMG equipped MG stack is quickly approaching and should support the 468 stack in the next turn. Luckily for the Germans, an activated 628 with a FT appeared but the FT breaks during the AFPh sparing the GE units.
16827
KG2
Things in this sector have stalled, as more RU MMC have moved forward to the frontline to take up positions across from the understrength GE. Rifle Coy 10 is approaching quickly but so far are still one bound away from the GE frontline. They might not even be in place for the Scenario End dr turns against them. Too cramp their efforts, a stack of them PANICs and are unable to move forward this turn. Without them, KG2 just does not have enough concentrated firepower to punch a way through the RU defenders and cross Respublikanskaya. Meanwhile, the PFPh is going well for the Germans against the RU units around T24, as the MG stack there is able to repel all three stacks with high rates of fire.
16829
Luck might be actually turning in the German's favour as both pesky 45L/45LL AT guns have broken, one on the turn it had just repaired itself, but for now it swings towards the Russians. It might be time to redirect the Btln Mtr OBA into this sector.
16828
KG3
The Univermag is in German hands, with only the presence of the adjacent FFE keeping them from occupying the 1 hex not in their control. Also their is limited unbroken RU units in Block 5 which prevents total control passing to the Germans. It is time to lift the ongoing bombardment and send it south to help out KG4 crossing into the next block, so that the assault troops can clear the block.
16830
The northern element of the Kampfgruppe is still being kept close to their starting positions with the stubborn RU preventing any forward progress. The appearance of the 45LL AT in 1U31 is especially effective at bringing the fire onto the GE stack in S32, with only the Russians own fortifications mitigating the damage. DFPh is finally able break the gun crew, but another gun crew in W32 has rallied and will move to occupy the 45LL AT gun behind the roadblock in its turn. With two StuG G's in imminent danger this must be dealt with quickly. The MG stack that helped to decimate the opposing RU has moved across the street and occupied the fortified buildings North of the Univermag. They should be able to advance forward to another blockhouse and suppress the AT gun in the next turn.
16831
KG4
With Block 6 firmly in German hands, forward movement by scouts has revealed a wall of fortified building locations across Pushkinskaya - a total of 10 fortified locations have been revealed in Block 7. This includes two 76* INF guns (one in U45, the other in 1U46), one of which lands a direct hit on the StuG G supporting the attack with a HEAT round. These will require time to deal with, but the GE firepower lined up on the West side of the street should be enough to whittle RU opposition down, especially if high ROF can be maintained. Surprisingly, all the adjacent RU firepower to the two GE MMC in T45/46 was only able to PIN one of them. If their opposition can be broken by their fellow behind them, they are in perfect position to exploit any gaps that open in the Russian lines. With luck, the Germans can use stuka support to bring these strongpoints down.

18 Sept - Turn 4
One stuka makes an appearance for the Germans. RU gets an RE that sees a local counter attack; luckily for the Germans, 2 out of the 3 S? in the area were dummies.
KG1
With the loss of the pioneer platoon, the attack into Block 1 has stalled as other GE MMC try and fill the gap left by them. This is hindered when the ever present Sniper takes out the 8-1 leading a stack (in Y4) on overwatch of the ferry sites. The plan for this turn had been to have them reinforce the effort in Block 1, where the pioneers had died and force the attack into the fortified adjacent building location (X7). With the loss of the leader and another squad breaking, this will not happen. Currently there are 5 GE MMC IVO X7 (one is broken however) that were still able to break the 458 inside the location, however as it retreated, a 628 (thankfully without the FT) enters the location to block ingress. Gaining complete control of Block 1 at this point may be untenable as is gaining anymore map edge.
16845
KG2
Despite the heavy GE fire, the RU frontline has been resilient and reinforced by other MMC. There is now a solid wall running down the East side of Respublikanskaya, which is proving harder and harder to break. Even as Rifle Coy 10 slides into their positions it might prove an impossible task to gain ground across the street, as the day draws to a close (I begin rolling for scenario-end next turn).
16846

16847
KG3
Block 5 is firmly in GE hands, with the exception of 2V38, which is occupied by a broken 9-2 and 2x458's. The main MG kill stack now occupies U35 and is ready to bring suppressing fire into Block 4 North of them.
16848
Luckily they are in position, as two new 45L/L appeared in W33/34 just as the two StuG's took up position (T34/bypass U35) to deal with the initial 45LL. Luckily, again, for the Germans, all three AT guns do not have any APCR or it could have been very dire indeed. The kills stacks will have to prioritize their fire towards these guns if the StuG's have a hope to survive.
16849
Meanwhile, the U31 blockhouse continues to pester the Germans in Block 4 (there is another 45LL AT gun on the first level, though the RU crew is now broken), breaking the odd squad of the assembled Germans across the street. This means that the total FP is somewhat lessened and likely the reason why they cannot bring enough effective fire into the squads. Additionally, a RU fanatic and now berserk 458 has advanced into the street, which will have to be dealt with before it can enter CC, and thereby limit the amount of fire that can further suppress the blockhouse.
16850
KG4
GE troops are in hexes adjacent to the RU fortified buildings, however exploiting this will be difficult, as the main MG killstack in S44 has a broken 9-2 and a 467/HMG squad. Also, there are now 2xberserk 458 and a 7-0 lying in T44, waiting to enter CCPH during their Turn 5, unless they can be dealt with; this will draw much need GE PFPh that otherwise could be directed to the buildings across the street. To the south of Block 7, three locations are occupied by GE troops, and if they can gain the time, they might be able to influence the battle north of them and help reduce the stubborn RU resistance.

The South FOO has redirected the 100mm+ OBA to hit the RU in the north of Block 7, which should help reduce the damage potential from that sector, though the lone Stuka attack was a total miss when it tried to hit U44. With some good dice roll, the GE might get 3 Stuka's (here's hoping) in the next turn to deal a good blow to these Russian strongpoints.

18 Sept - Turn 5
GE gets 2 stukas this turn, while there is no RE for the RU.
KG1
The GE have a tentative toehold in X7, and are holding the position with a single 468. Efforts to reinforce that front have continually failed, what with squads breaking and routing at inopportune times. Furthermore, the nearby 8-1 is taken out by a sniper (that is three leaders so far this scenario), but the squad left behind is able to Sniper Check successfully and lower the EN SAN to 4. The MG stack in 2T6 however, had an amazing run of good die rolls, which saw 9 ROF's take out a lot of RU units before having to change a hot barrel. Elsewhere, the effort to push the map edge keeps getting derailed as activated RU units in the low ground continue to break the intrepid HS/crew that is doing the push.
16859
KG2
Speaking of a good run of ROF, another MG stack makes a Hail Mary when three units are KIA (from a 2KIA result) due to Random Selection. This then allows the adjacent 548 to assault move into the fortified location and secure it.
16858
Other GE fire in this sector has done a good job breaking more RU units, so some GE elements are able to cross the street and occupy locations, though a couple of MMC break in the attempt and are forced to rout away. Unfortunately, not all GE MMC were lucky, as the remnants of the HW Pl (2x127, w/ HMG/MMG) and their leader are broken as they attempted to move closer to the action. They had to leave the HMG in the street as they routed. Also, a 467 (from the reinforcing Rifle Coy 10) entered the ongoing H-to-H in S27 (a 467 engaged with a 527/9-0), but was unable to swing the Melee into the GE favour as both GE units were eliminated, and the RU unscathed.
16860
KG3
This Kampfgruppe is faring rather well, according to the initial battle plan. With Block 5 firmly in GE hands, the massed GE firepower is easily able to deal with the 3 AT guns (all crews are either broken and routed away or KIA), and bring more suppressive fire into Block 4 to support the northern elements of the KG. Unfortunately one of the 45L scored a Shock result on the 'turret' of the StuG G, and so its current state is UK. Meanwhile, the berserk 458 in the street (T31) is dealt a blow by the adjacent GE squads, which eventually manage to eliminate the unit, though it took two attempts, as a 36+ -4 DRM only got a 3MC on the first attempt reducing it too a HS. With the gun crews abandoning the AT guns, Block 4 is attainable and almost in GE hands, with a single RU 149 (wounded) standing tall in U31.
16861
KG4
Here the battle has swung back and forth, and the GE forces have taken a serious pounding. Though the Corrected 100mm+ OBA is landing on U43 and doing a good job, other RU units further south have put a serious hurt to the GE effort (the toehold that the GE had in Block 7), with all but 1 GE squad breaking - I chose to make multi-location FG for most of the RU attacks this turn, seems reasonable...ouch - and that squad choosing to break to avoid being trapped in a pocket. They have now all routed out of Block 7.
GE Turn 5, looking good

RU Turn 5...not so much
16863
The 2 x 838 that had entered U45, were unable to withstand the adjacent FP stacks, with one breaking (and eliminated for Failure to Rout), and the other lasting into the RU turn before it too broke and was eliminated. At least it drew the berserk RU in the street into their hex, keeping them from possibly assaulting other GE units. One Stuka attempting to provide close air support failed its Sighting TC, while the other was able to Sight in, but missed its TH roll. Further, the GE MG stack (in S44) that had done such a terrific job the previous turn, are all broken, including the 9-2 and are forced to retreat, depriving the front of much needed firepower. They should be able to rally in Turn 6 however, and return to their positions.

That body armor on those U45 838s sure came in handy. That’s an impressive wall of Russians.

18 Sept - Turn 6
GE gets two stukas, while the RU gets an RE that sees 2xS? infiltrate A34 (C32 Sewer Hex) and claim 4 hexes.

Overall, I was definitely pushing my luck this turn, forcing the issue when I probably should have been more conservative, and thus paid for it in CVP gains for the RU.

KG1
The attack in this sector continues to stall, and the lone squad in X6 finally breaks from the pressure and routs of the hex, ceding it to the RU. The exhausted GE troops cannot must enough fire power to cause any lasting damage, except for the 2T6 MG stack that eliminates a GUN crew and 458 (BB5), but not before the AA GUN kills the last Sdkfz 10/5 that was sitting out on its lonesome and didn't seek cover.

KG2
Enabled by the effective GE fire from the previous turn, and this one, elements of the Kampfgruppe have taken up positions across Respublikanskaya, and made their first foray into Block 2 and 3. They have been able to withstand most of the opposing fire, and can hold on until scenario end, though have lost control of the fortified V23 building.

KG3
The only Kampfgruppe that have made their pre-plotted objectives, having occupied Block 5 and parts of 4, they are shaping up well when the scenario ended. Unfortunately, in the eagerness to clear more S? counters when I should have been more cautious, a 45LL was generated, 4 hexes BEHIND a StuG G, which while missing out in the DFPh, was able to burn the AFV in the ensuing RU PFPh. Two AFV's lost this turn hurts the CVP tally, but at least the all important Univermag is firmly in GE hands.

KG4
As with KG1, the attack has completely stalled, despite controlling Block 6. With the southern elements pushed out of Block 7, and the lack of good IFT results, the attack has been called off and energy is being spent on maintaining a good defensive line. Two stukas providing close air support, are unable to score hits (2 x 9 final TH DR) so their bombs are wasted. Unfortunately, the aggressive Russians send an NKVD 628 into the hex with the lone StuG G, and it scores a kill, making that three AFV's in a single turn.

Thankfully the game ends on Turn 6 with a 3 rolled, and a GE Victory. Wow, what a slaughter. Thanks for all the work in creating the Casualties Bin for VASL, had to do a lot of lifting this scenario :)

SITREP #5
This was one crazy battle, 301 CVP for the GE, and a loss of 78 CVP worth of men & equipment for the GE. With a 59% successful activation, and 1.5 units per activation, not too mention the 29 or so fortified locations that cropped up in this scenario alone, wow, I was lucky to only lose what I did. Mind you, I probably should have played more conservatively near the end, but I wasn't expecting a 45LL to open up behind my StuG, and the Block 7 southern troops breaking and routing, allowing the RU to get with in APh of my other StuG. So there is that. Anyways, here some metrics for the just completed scenario.

Here is a table of the current OoB as of end-scenario 18 Sept, including the KIA's to date for the entire CG. Note this does not account for the replenishment CPP or any purchases I will be making.

This is the table of RU units activated (note the 72 Eeelight 458's).

What did Pyrrhus say..."One more such victory and we are undone!"

Needless to say, with the heavy losses of the Russians, their net 'counter-attack' drm was +1 and they rolled a 4 so no nighttime attack. Good thing for the Germans I think. I also think another idle day might be in order.
