The problem with letting the dice decide I guess.
No, I understand that. I have read about Stalingrad a lot. I have always thought that the Russian's standard operating procedures were to attack en masse at night only. I am surprised that it is an option.

Come December that changed as the German's were severely limited by casualties & shortages of every thing.

S?: Total 342 Hold 193 Reserve 149
S? Activations: Total 45 Dummy 25 Successful 20

The Plan
16570
This day's action will be broken down into 4 kampfgruppe encompassing four lines of advance.

KG1 IVO the 9th of January Square, will send two squads to clear the map edge to the Volga, while the primary effort will be against Pavlov's and Zobolotnov's Houses with a view to eliminate any opposition and occupy them by day's end. KG1 will have 2 x captured 76L ART pieces in direct support as well as a module of 150+ OBA to reduce the objectives.

KG2 (Nizhevorodskaya to Kurskaya) will push eastward and reach Respublikanskaya by day's end. To support this effort, a full-strength platoon of StuG G's (Pl 1 w/ 8-1 AL) and 2 x Stosstruppe platoons have been attached. Secure any VPO location enroute to Respublikanskaya.

KG3 (Bolshayavitskaya and IVO Nail Factory) will push towards the Square of Fallen Heroes and the Univermag. This endeavour will be supported by two platoons of assault engineers (sadly no FT remain available) and StuG G Pl 2. Upon successfully clearing the RU pockets leftover from the previous night attack, a concerted push will be made to clear buildings towards the Square.

KG4 (IVO 1st of May Square and South of Nail Factory), reinforced by 9th rifle coy, will clear the south map edge to Pushkinskaya, and then support KG3's effort towards the Square of Fallen Heroes. StuG G Pl3 is attached as is a 75L AT gun should armour appear.

A flight of Stuka's are available on request to help eliminate any strongpoints encountered.

Gentlemen, Good Luck!

Results from the Turn 1 GE PFPh, poor showing. I'm going to blame this on the sudden reorganization for the impending assault that saw the troops not in good positions to bring effective fire...yeah, that's the reason.
16581
Turn 1...2 leaders KIA by sniper

EDIT
...make that 3 leaders (7-0, 2x8-1) killed by sniper during the RU DFPh of Turn 1

16 Sept - Day German Assault
Due to the rapid reorganization and redeploying of GE units, to bypass Phase 1 (the anticipation of a Russian early morning counter-attack) and move directly into an all-out assault, the somewhat disorganized units were not fully emplaced prior to the offensive being started. This led to many leaders and units PANICing, and those that could fire missed their mark. By the end of the GE Turn 1, only two RU half-squads lay dead for all the firepower directed at them. Also disappointingly, no Stuka's were available this turn as they were doubtless required elsewhere in the sprawling battlefield.

KG1
Ineffective PFPh, sees the RU sniper get a KIA on the 7-0 FOO, as he was peeking to get a better look at his artillery spotting round, and break a squad manning the captured RU HMG.
16608
The RU DFPh is somewhat more effective, and the Sdkfz 10/5 (which had also PANICed) is blown up by a turret hit from the 1st floor 45L AT gun in Pavlov's House.
16609
During the RU Turn 1, GE DFPh is marginally more effective, with a Lt Mtr (in a mtr stack (K5)) getting a CH on Pavlov's House. RS sees the AT crew get broken (after it had broken its gun with a flurry of 9 shots against a GE stack in P2) and subsequently eliminated by further fire. Also, the 9-1 in the Milchhaus scrambles for the field phone, and after establishing contact, brings down an FFE on Zobolotnov's House, into its pre-registered hex. This OBA does clear off more S? counters and produces another pillbox, manned by two RU squads. Finally, the RU get an RE which produced 2x458's with an HMG, an MMG, and an 8-0 leader in the U4 Warehouse.
16610
KG2
Pregame S? Activation reveals a 45L AT gun and an elite 628 in N20, adjacent to a StuG G and a stack of GE MMC. Both are ineffective during the GE Turn, but the RU PFPh sees the 628 break the three adjacent 548's before itself breaking from GE DFPh. In the subsequent GE CCPh, a 45LL AT gun crew is killed in M23, before it can bring an effective fire against the GE. Another roadblock appears in O20, manned by a 9-0 commissar, 447 with an HMG and a 527 SMG squad. Also, the busy RU sniper eliminates an 8-1 leading an MG kill stack in P27.
16611
KG3
Sniper fire has eliminated an 8-1, that was leading an MG kill stack, also breaking an accompanying 467, and so the northern part of the Kampfgruppe has become stalled as they try to sort themselves out. Again GE PFPh has proved ineefective against the adjacent units (including the three RU pockets in K36/L36/M37), but the DFPh/CCPh is able to break most of the pockets which are subsequently eliminated because they have no where to run (except for M37, though the 9-2 is eliminated). The 628 RU assault engineer in the L36 pocket, bravely drops a DC down the stairwell breaking the two 838's on the first floor during DFPh, but is itself broken from the blast and subsequently eliminated by an 838 that had APh into the ground floor preventing it from routing away in the RU Turn.
16612
KG4
The attack in the south has completely stalled, between ineffective PFPh, PANIC and stubborn RU defense. The stack of 3x467 in M49, cannot break the adjacent RU units (including the 45L AT gun crew), and are themselves slowly whittle down and broken , first by RU DFPh and then RU PFPh, and forced to rout away. This could be a slog in the 1st of May Square.

North of the square, early S? activation had revealed a dug-in KV1 monster in N43 (indeed the both the 1st and 2nd floors have become fortified), but it's fire proved ineffective, and after the accompanying RU squads broke and routed away, it lay defenseless (relatively), against the lone GE 467 that gained ambush and subsequently killed it. Below, the GE PFPh...

16 Sept - Turn 2
Things are looking much better for the Germans, as their fire is beginning to wear down the Russians.
KG1
The German in the north edge of the map almost got caught in some Danger Close OBA activity, as it lands directly in front of their positions after the 9-2 adjusted fire onto the Warehouse. The target hex was NW and off by one from that designated, but still managed to hit the large Russian stack in T3, breaking all three squads, but not the 8-0 with them. Other GE PFPh and DFPh broke all of the activated squads in Pavlov's House, and plan to keep them under DM until they can inch closer to them. There are still 2 unactivated S? in R5, that appear unfazed by the withering German fire, and they prevent an all out rush across the deadly open ground. South of the Square in Q10, RU advances a 527 and 9-2 into close combat, and kills the 468 there, but also both are killed in return. This action is clearing up the south edge of the Square and allowing the Germans to begin encircling, both Pavlov's and Zobolotnov's Houses as well as the pillbox. With a lack of DC in the area, it will requires significant, and deadly accurate small arms fire to break the inhabitants. Meanwhile, a lone 228 scout reaches W1, but activates (due to a RU RE on its turn) a 45L AT gun in X3, which fortunately (for the scout) PANICs during its PFPh.
16627
KG2
KG2 has begun to clear the initial set of stone structures, and forced the broken Russians to rout away eastward. Accurate fire has eliminated the two squads with the 9-0 commissar, which itself is killed in the ensuing DFPh before it can reach safety. Also, the crew manning the 45L AT is killed in CCPh by the three rallied 548's that dashed across the street to become adjacent to the gun before advancing into combat with the PINNED crew. Other GE fire has dwindled the fanatical troops in O21 and keeping them broken, with only a single NKVD 628 standing tall in the building. Turn 3 should see its location surrounded. A loss of leadership (one due to sniper, another because it is trying to rally broken GE squads) sees several MMC in the area PANIC and unable to move or act. Despite this, some forward progress is being made as several VP locations are gained.
16628
KG3
The fight IVO of the Nail Factory block has swung into the German favour, with several key buildings starting to fall into German hands, and the Univermag is almost in sight. Here more accurate GE fire is breaking Russian personal, and forcing what can rout to flee eastward. Building O38 is the scene of a fierce Melee between 2x548 and 2x467, as the Russians were unable to gain ambush. They are now locked in combat with 1:1 odds against each other, however the freed up 838's are slowly advancing towards them to help out.. The berserk 426, subsequently reduced to a HS due to a K/2 result enters CC with an MG stack, and is quickly dealt with by the GE defenders. A nearby broken 228 manning its 45LL AT guns is also forced to rout away the previous turn when the GE moved close to it. This means that the GE have cleared the way up to Proletarskaya.
16629
KG4
Here too, the fight is swinging the German's way with several RU MMC eliminated for failure to Rout, just plain Reduced or routing away for their lives. There are only two RU holdout locations (P43 and P44 (still unactivated S?)) left in the O43 building, and the southwest edge of the Square of Fallen Heroes is in range. If the GE HW can make their way to the front locations, they can begin to bring fire onto the stubborn Russian defenders facing KG3. Meanwhile, the RU troops IVO the 1st if May Square have been broken, and forced to retreat eastward to stone buildings. With luck, the Theatre can begin taking fire in the next GE turn and the building taken.

16 Sept - Day Turn 3
A lot of PANIC to go around for the GE forces...
KG1
Aggressive GE PFPh sees the RU broken MMC in Pavlov's House reduced and eventually eliminated, leaving a single S? in the cellar and a broken 447 on the 1st level. If the RU forces in the nearby Warehouse can be suppressed, an easy approach can be made to secure both locations. However, both RU captured 76L ART bought as GE Reinforcements malfunction. Also, the 9-1 manning the field phone loses access to the battery when he draws his first RED CHIT, while the MG stack with him (not directed by him) manage to break the 9-0 commissar in the pillbox South of Zobolotnov's House. The isolated 248 in P7 continues to get PINNED by RU fire and is unable to enter the adjacent rubble pile for the past two turns.

Meanwhile, the RU 45LL AT gun (X3) continues to hammer the GE MMC waiting in T1,breaking two of the squads as a 458 turns berserk and enters CC with an adjacent 447 in its APh. They are now locked in Melee. Finally, slow progress is being made in securing the stone building on the southeast edge of the 9th January Square. The two GE HS Mtr crews, advancing slowly behind the lead troops into R11, activates an adjacent 127 with a MOL-P, but the SW fails to hit on its PFPh, and the subsequent DFPh says it suffer a K/2 results from the 2x237.
16666
KG2
Inching forward, the troops of KG2 have encountered roadblocks, fortified buildings and another pillbox as they push eastward. One 45LL AT gun and a 458, popped up right in front of a stack of 467's and their 8-1 leader. Furious fire between both stacks, leaves the RU gun crew pinned and one of the GE 467's. The other two GE MMC and the 8-1 enter CC with the pinned crew and 458 and gaining ambush are able to kill them quickly without taking a loss.
16667 16674
The 458 in the pillbox, is broken by DFPh, and is forced to rout away leaving the pillbox vacant. This leaves a lone NKVD 628 in a fortified O21 between the GE forces and Smolenskaya, though lack of leadership means many GE units still PANIC (see above pic) and cannot move or fire. Also, a RU RE sees the StuG G in O19 come under RECALL and it will withdraw on the next turn.
16668
KG3
This Kampfgruppe continues to slog its way forward. With the RU pockets cleared, the assault pioneers are finally able to push the assault and using smoke move across Volgogradskaya towards some RU, fortified locations. The MG stack (M37) manages to break the opposition across from it, and starting Turn 4, the GE can begin occupying the houses East of Proletanskaya, and then face off with the Univermag. P35 also continues to hold out, and the GE DFPh saw two 248 HS go berserk and advance down to the ground level in preparation to assault the unbroken GE in the fortified O35. With accurate Turn 4 GE PFPh, they should be dealt with, hopefully.
16669
Only a single, RU-occupied, VPO hex lies between the GE and the Square of Fallen Heroes in the block of buildings east of the Nail Factory, but again PANIC and broken GE MMC are preventing a good clean push.
16670
KG4
It turned real scary for the GE, as the next RU S? activations in row produced a 628 with a FT ea. Luckily, the one FT broke immediately when it tried to DFF, but the other was able to break a squad during DFF, and then during the GE PFPh, it turned the FT on a stack of 2x 467s below it in P44 and broke them all, forcing them to rout away. Enough GE firepower is in range that can, with luck, deal with the stubborn holdouts.
16671
1st of May Square is almost cleared of RU forces, with only a single 628 occupying the Theater building, while a single 426 is holding out in P50. The theater should be occupied in the next turn.

I can't understand why the Gun crew in X3 abandoned the gun as it seems to be in working order and the crew unbroken.

The crew never abandoned the X3 AT gun, or did you mean a different one? I don't see what you are talking about sorry.

The crew being placed above the gun indicates the gun has been abandoned. Like a SW if possessed by the crew it is stacked atop the MMC [EXC: unless you are using a house rule where guns and SW are possessed by the personnel directly atop them; then never mind as I assumed all SW (and guns) were possessed by the unit beneath them as per the ASLRB].

16 Sept - Day Turn 4
KG1

Pavlov's House has finally fallen. The cellar dwelling 447 broke during FPF allowing the ground floor entry of GE MMC from the North and West. In the subsequent RU RPh, the remnants of the Russians were eliminated as they had no where to run. Meanwhile, the stubborn RU holdouts in the warehouse, are returning to man the SW that were lying in T3; the berserk 458 in melee with GE MMC (a 447 was reinforced by a 467, which saw the berserk unit eliminated in H-to-H) dies, leaving the two GE squads adjacent to the now re-armed 458. The OBA lands on Zobolotnov's House, and causes a unit in the adjacent pillbox to break and rout away. Finally, the Voentorg building is cleared of RU units, and in the next turn, GE fire can be brought to bear on the pillbox/stone buildings IVO it.
16695
The RU 45LL AT gun (X3) continues to hammer GE MMC, and switches fire (its previous target moving out of LOS) to the lone 228 occupying W1, and eventually kills it. Also, another dug-in RU KV1 M42 appears in V5 to further cause trouble for the weary Germans.
16696

KG2
The recently revealed Russian pillbox (Q20) and adjacent fortified building location are also cleared of enemy and occupied by Stosstruppe, along with a crew-manned, captured, Russian HMG. This allows them to secure the west side of Smolenskaya and suppress the eastern side. It is likely that the next one-two turns (barring game-end dr's) will see the GE units in KG2 securing their lines with a view to the forthcoming perimeter delineation. Also, the recalled StuG G is making its way off board, while the beleagured gun-crew of a 50L AT gun attempting to push their gun towards the new frontline, come under sniper fire, break and are forced to abandon their gun in the street.
16697

KG3
With the aid of the assault pioneers, some of the buildings (P36/Q37) have GE troops in them. Unfortunately, one of the 838's is PINNED and PANICed, so it decides to rout away rather than (likely) die in CCPh by an advancing 458/228. Occupying a fortified location, adjacent to the 2x berserk 248's keeps them from entering CC, and hopefully they can be eliminated with good encircling GE fire.
16694
Unfortunately, a lone RU 426 enters a melee during the RU CCPh with a RU 248 (reduced in the GE CCPh due to being PINNED) and a GE 467/247, which swings the balance into the Russian favour and rolling a 2, the GE units are killed. They do take the HS with them, but not before the 426 generates a 7-0 leader with it.
16693
16698

KG4
During the RU PFPh, it draws down an Artillery Strike (targeting the 9-2 stack in N47), however it deviates off target and instead lands in the midst of RU/S? troops and so is cancelled. The RU RE that was generated at the start of their turn produces a 628 AE with a FT, but luckily for the Germans its located on a rooftop, four hexes away from the nearest GE troops.

GE forces have cleared the last Russian holdouts (P44) have all been eliminated through CR or Failure to Rout (though a single broke 628 MMC is in the cellar), so the large block of buildings is in German hands, and they can now begin to bring fire onto the Univermag buildings, and aid the south wing of KG3. Also, the Theater is now in German hands, with a lone 426 in P50 that last holdout. Similar to KG2, KG4 will now attempt to secure its lines in the South while providing aid to KG3's efforts.

Ahh, roger.

For GUNs I place the crew on top, and or SW underneath. Just something I've always seen done (by me and my f-to-f- opponents) and used, but your right about the possession indication, they should be underneath the weapon.

16 Sept - Day Turn 5
RU gets an RE during the PFPh; an Artillery Strike lands on the 8-0 stack in N50, breaking them and eliminating an adjacent 247 manning a Lt Mtr.
16703
KG1
With Pavlov's House secured, an intrepid 228 (now scout since its ART gun died) and a 247 HS advance into Zobolotnov's House, and force the last broken RU units to rout away, and eventually out of the building in the RU RtPh. Meanwhile, in the Warehouse, a single 467 (which gained ambush against a PINNED 458) is unable to kill the RU unit initially, but in the RU CCPh it manages to finally eliminate it at the cost of a loss of a HS.
16704
South of the 9th January Square, GE troops have taken possession of the 1.5 level Voentorg, and are able to begin shooting at the RU in the houses/rubble across the street. Finally, the wounded 8-0 finally reaches the 9-1-led MG stack (M8) and is able to take over the field phone/OBA duties, letting the 9-1 go back to directing fire towards the pillbox. Also, the RU northern Sniper takes out its counterpart and then proceeds to first pin the 2x447 in T2, and then breaks one of the same.
16705
KG2
KG2 continues to consolidate their positions and sent a couple of units across Smolenskaya to rout the broken Russians there further East. The StuG G under Recall PANICs on its turn and is still onboard.
16706
KG3
The block of houses NE of the Nail Factory are firmly in GE hands, with the lone remaining RU MMC (the berserk 246 in P35) is baited out with an 838 hold up in an unfortified building location adjacent to it, and the crazy Ivans are cut down with accurate DFF by an MG kill stack (20FP -4 DRM). The only other RU units (broken and holding up in 1P35) are eliminated when they cannot rout away. Further South, in P39, the victorious 426/7-0 from the previous turn's CCPh become PANNICed and thus are able to be swarmed by more Germans, who winning the ambush overwhelm them and then the building is controlled by German units. Now the assembled GE forces can begin to whittle the opposition down in the Univermag and clear the Square of Fallen Heroes.
16707
KG4
In the south, KG 4 has run into opposition and stiff enemy fire. First a 120+ OBA artillery strike lands on N50, then a RU RE sees an HMG/MMG with 2x447 appear in 1R48. Next a foolhardy 467 drops its broken HMG and enters combat with an adjacent 426, gains ambush and yet fails to kill the RU squad which instead reduces the 467 to a HS; the HS is killed in the subsequent RU CCPh. There are also several broken GE stacks in the Theatre or around it. On the RU PFPh, its artillery strike in the area is adjusted and randomly falls off board but clips the lone GE 467 in P50. The GE should be able to regroup and suppress the RU MG's, but it could get dicey. Luckily, the GE DFPh was able to break the HMG squad and pin the MMG one.

16 Sept - Day Turn 6
RU gets another RE (I think that is 4 or 5 in a row), which sees the GE suffer Ammunition Shortage for the remainder of the scenario.
KG1
Luckily for the GE HS in the warehouse and the adjacent 447 in the streets, their combined firepower is enough to break the two RU 447's with an 8-0 leader in U3 when they failed a 4MC, forcing them to rout away. If they had survived into the RU Turn, they likely would have entered CC with the understrength GE and killed them.
16724
The 9-1 led MG stack in the Milchhaus manages to break the isolated 447 in the pillbox, which dies in the RtPh for failure to rout. Also the artillery continues to rain down, and is adjusted onto W7, killing several MMC and removing/activating S? in the vicinity. GE positions were firmed up in this sector in anticipation of the game end dr, rather than push the frontline eastward.

(Up to this point (besides the first turn) I had completely forgot to roll for Air Support, so I did this retroactively. Turns out that only Turn 4 and this Turn 6 would see Stuka's arriving, so I used the Turn 4 ones before the OBA action. This saw the KV1 become SHOCKed, and the crew of the pesky 45LL in X3 broke; the shock was removed for the RU turn, so it was a moot point primarily.)
The Stuka's in Turn 6 have mixed results, the first does not score a good hit on the KV1 and so it is unscathed, but the other drops a 200FP bomb onto W7 and does a good job off eliminating many RU units in the 4-levels of building that were all occupied. This leaves an unactivated S? in the cellar, and a broken 458 on the second level.

16726
KG2
RU were able to counter attack two forward GE positions, with mixed results in CC. First a 458 wielding an HMG enters MELEE with a GE 248 and kills it in H-to-H, having gained ambush. Next a berserk 248 (made so in the GE PFPh when a broken unit rolled HoB) was joined with a fresh arriving NKVD 628 in a MELEE with 2x548's, and with neither side gaining ambush, the RU units were killed when the GE rolled a 2 without taking a loss. This also generates an 8-0 for the GE to help fill out the depleted officer ranks.
16730
Meanwhile the RU sniper is kept busy and eliminates the broken 228 crew in N20. Some elements of KG2 have gained a tentative toehold on the East side of Smolenskaya.
16727
KG3
Nothing much happens in this sector this turn as the GE primarily ran around securing VPO objectives. Fire is being directed across the street into the RU units there, and a lone 838 is lying adjacent to an almost deserted Univermag which he will be able to enter next turn. If the strongpoint (S39 is the only frontline location occupied) can be broken, then the other assault pioneers in the area should be able to rush over and occupy the building. GE DFPh has turned another 458 berserk, so it will have to be dealt with in Turn 7, ideally as it charges across the street.

KG4
The elements of KG4 have taken up position across the street from their RU foes and are slowly causing attrition amongst them. If most can be suppressed or broken, then it may be feasible for some troops to assault across and occupy those buildings. Notably the RU MG stack in 1S49 has been broken and they retreated to safety to try and regroup. However, another AFV with a broken MA has been recalled and will begin making its way off board in the next turn.
