We've established that the Java bundled with Vassal is working.

Next, do this from the command prompt:

sorry only seen this this evening even though I signed on in the morning and at 7 tonight.

Just tried again and same result and yes I have the flashing prompt

Ok. Show me what files are in Vassal's config file directory. Since you're using Windows 10, that will be C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\VASSAL.

Ok. First thing to do is delete all of the errorLog-, key- and lock-* files. Then try launching 3.5.8 the normal way.

• Does that make any difference for the behavior when you try to launch 3.5.8?

Good, that's showing what the problem is. You have a corrupted preferences file.

You should find a directory named prefs there, and a file named V_Global in it. What's in that file?

Happy to help. A corrupted global preferences file is one of those things that can stop Vassal from opening.

As a result of this, we've fixed a 15-year-old bug that prevented an error dialog from displaying when the global preferences file is corrupted. That fix will go out in 3.6.2. The next time this happens to someone, what's wrong will be easier to spot.
