I think the boards were renamed by BFP. Check their website for the updated names.

I think HOB 1-4 are now BFP H I J K
This is correct - HOB-I became BFP-H and HOB-II became BFP-I.

I see a problem with some of the double sided maps eg 2a and 2b, when they are cropped in half (11-20) and the palm tree transformation is applied. The VASL LOS breaks.
And you don't need to have an orchard on the map. So far I think the problem is on the 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s. I haven't gone further than that.

There is a counter for the Weather. One can flip it through many values such as Clear, Mud, Overcast, etc. There are also a few combination values like Clear & Gusty.
In my Ortona playtesting, Clear & Mud, Rain & Mud have come up. These values do not exist on the counter, so I use two Weather counters. Does it make sense to remove the combination values because there are so many possibilities?

I'm guessing that Clear and Mud is just the Mud counter. There is a counter "Heavy Rain & Mud" and that may be an error and should be "Rain & Mud".
But more counters is always better.

For some reason I had closed VASL's Server Window.

30031

For the love of God I could not find a way to reopen it without restarting VASL.

Am I missing something obvious or is this just a senior moment?

Reporting a bug that reminds me of an old issue that seemed fixed in the meantime:

VASSAL v3.7.12, VASL v6.6.7

Situation:
  • The ASL Scenario Website is (currently) not available.
  • I am attempting to load a VASL file with a Draggable Overlay which contains HTML text with a link to a picture on the ASL Scenario website while the website is not available.
Problem:
  • -VASL freezes. The VASL file will not load. In fact, it is not even possible to close any VASL window at all unless ending the process by force with the Windows Task Manager.
Further details:
  • -No problems loading the (otherwise) same file without the Draggable Overlay linking to the ASL Scenario website while the latter is down.
Analysis / Guesswork:
  • I seem to recall a very similar problem in the past: If links to graphics (incorporated into VASL's Draggable Overlays as part of HTML code) were currently not reachable in the net, then it was impossible to open those VASL files. Situations in which this could happen was one's own internet connection being down, the target site not being reachable, or the picture being no longer available via the the said link (i.e. dead link).
  • This old problem was caused by VASL "waiting" for the link to be reachable indefinitively in order to open the VASL file.
  • The old problem was fixed by introducing a "timer" to VASL: If the linked picture would not load within - say 30 seconds - VASL would open the .vsav anyway (with the picture not being displayed as part of the Draggable Overlay).
  • Maybe the timer which was once introduced to fix this issue is for some reason no longer operable.
Post Scriptum:
  • - If the ASL Scenario Archive website is up and running again, I will try to open the same (unchanged file) with Draggable Overlay containing a link to it and report if the problem is not encountered when the ASL Scenario Archive is up and running. I would expect, no longer encountering the problem under this circumstances.
I could provide the said VASL files (with and without linked picture), however, it is not possible to upload the .vsav file format up here into GS forum.

Working on this is in our job jar. Honestly, I am not sure if this is going to be fixable within VASL. It might be a VASSAL issue. Could you email me the files (dougerimmer@gmail.com) as I may need to fire them over to the VASSAL team at some point.

VASL6.7.0 will be a bug fix version so there is a good chance of getting it done by then (planned release April 2025).

Email with the requested file is sent.
I have just checked if the problem persists while the ASL Scenario Website (to which the link in the Draggable overlay points) is up. In that case, there is no problem as expected.

The email contains a suggestion on how you might be able to replicate the problem.

Cheers,

Hey guys-

Experienced a problem last night that I have never seen before

Setting up a TotR senario, 290 Last Train to Leningrad

There are a number of overlays including RR17, RR19, RY7 and X36

I have the newest versions of both VASSAL 3.7.14 and VASL 6.6.8 loaded
as well as extensions for both the NKVD and Rail Cars

I was able to load the board 18a, place the overlays, place the pregame
Rail Cars subject to Rubble Generation and counters

While beginning the Rubble Generation my opponent said he could
not see any Railroad hexes

Looking back at the load, the summary said that it failed to
download the overlays. Checking, we are running the same
versions and he even reloaded them to be sure

At synch he gets error messages loading the overlays, sending
him the saved game file and trying to have him load it from
scratch yielded the same results- it attempts to download the
overlay and it fails- interestingly, with further exploration, his
setup is not downloading any overlays, not just the newer TotR
ones, Can't load Wd3, O2 etc....

My thinking is that it can be only one of 2 things- his machine
is preventing him from downloading an otherwise accessible
file, eg. his virus software or computer software/settings OR
his VASSAL/VASL settings are preventing his computer from
downloading the otherwise accessible file- My money is on
scenario 1 but I am looking for thoughts-

Thanx in advance

Doc D-

FWIW, there is a special setup for that scenario. You might want to see if that help any...
30171

Other than that, saying there are error messages w/o posting what the error message is makes it really hard to give any meaningful advice.
(edit) And get the text out of the VASSAL error log (Help... Show Error Log in the VASSAL window) as that tends to be more specific than the VASL chat text.

Thanx for giving it a look- I understand but couldn't post screenshots as I was getting this second hand over the phone- VASL was attempting to download the overlays but it just said "Download Failed"- Interestingly though when I tried to get him to download other overlays like a woods or orchard he got the same message leading me to believe it was either in the preference settings or his machine blocking the VASL application from downloading

Anyway I will suggest trying the Terrain Changes tab- I also suggested ripping out VASSAL and VASL and reinstalling from scratch as I don't believe he has had a problem with overlays in the past-

While I have not come across this particular variant of the "download failed" problem, other instances that I recall have not been saved by reinstalling VASSAL and/or VASL. In my experience, the most common cause is either (1) an improperly set Extensions Directory preference, or (2) a directory mismatch.

For (1), you partner should make sure that his preference (File -> Preferences -> Extensions) is set to a directory that can be accessed by VASSAL - on Windows this means something under the Users or Documents hierarchy and absolutely NOT near where VASSAL is installed under Program Files.

For (2) he should make sure that the directory set in the Preference and the directory that shows up in the BoardPickerWindow are one and the same. To check the boardpicker setting, click on Select at the top of the window that appears after selecting Start A New Game from the Wizard or after selecting Pick New Boards for the Scenario from the ASL Menu (potato masher image).
