Playtest against Jonathan "Polynike" McNeice of my mod of Marc Custer's Italian Campaign, entitled Up the Bloody Boot simply to keep it distinct.

Changelist
-Changed VPs to reflect a German Overwhelming Victory being keeping the Allies below the Gustav Line, a German Significant Victory keeping the Allies out of Rome, a German marginal Victory keeping the Allies south of the Gothic Line, a draw being the Allies get to or just crossing the Po, an Allied marginal victory being the Allies getting to Verona/Vicenza, an Allied Significant Victory being the Allies getting deep into Northeastern Italy, and an Allied Overhwelming Victory the Allies capturing Brenner Pass, getting into Austria, and capturing Trieste.

-Fixed entry date of CDN 11 InfBgd (Now early December 43, from January 44)

-Fixed UK 7 Armoured Division withdrawal (Now early December 43, from March 44)

-Withdrew 4 P.L. Dragoon Gds to be part of CDN 12 Bgd (August 44)
Added TO to disband UK 1 Arm Div late in 44 (was done historically in Sept 44)

-Made several rivers Major Rivers

-Added 10 Company sized units with Regimental size markings to be used by the Germans when they wish to withdraw, as these units can be left behind to help ensure the retreating unit gets away

-Withdrew Canadians in Spring of 45

-Made Weather more debilitatin

-Adjusted Luftwaffe entry and exit dates as per Jonathan “Polynike” McNeice's research

Other changes to come, but I'd really like to get a playtest going with the new weather 'matirx' to see if actually adds any historic feel to the scenario.

Turn 1 Sept 9-11, 1943

West:
Contact was lost with the US Rangers that made a combat drop northwest of Salerno.
Northwest of Salerno, the US amphibious operation succeeded after sustaining 40% infantry casualties.
Follow-on attacks gave the HG PzD's engineers and recon element a bloodied nose.
--
A combined amphibious land operation by US 36 ID from the sea and UK 139 IBgd-UK 46 ID from south of the city managed to eject the 64 PzGrRgt-16 PzD and remnants of 79 PzGrRgt-16 PzD. Casualties were light, at 10%.
Follow-on attacks further bloodied the noses of the 64 and 79 PzGrRgts.
--
UK 46 and 56 IDs experienced very little resistance in their landings south of Salerno.
UK 139 IBgd ejected 79 PzGrRgt from their beach defences south of Salerno.
2 PzRgt-16 PzD gave spirited resistance to attempts by UK 128 IBgd to advance southeast from the beachhead, but they were ejected on the 11th by UK 201 Gdr Mot IBgd.
UK 167 IBgd claimed the deepest penetration of the first three days, as it advanced 30km inland.

East:
UK 1 AirD halted before Barletta, which is held by 4 FJRgt-1 FJD, so that they could bring the full might of the division to bear on the town.

South:
9 PzGrRgt-26 PzD was broken up by UK 5 ID forces.
26 PzD's HQ and artillery were bloodied by the Canadians, while their recon element was bloodied by UK 5 ID.

Turn 2 Sept 12-15, 1943

I realize that I forgot to place a supply point at Salerno with my turn 1 TO, so I selected the TO this turn.

I think Jonathan is going to play this one smart. He did not attempt a serious counter-attack on the Salerno landing, nor did he attempt to lash against my UK 1 AirD on the east coast. Instead, it would appear that he is withdrawing to a defensive line that he'll most likely be able to consolidate before I get to it.

West:
The bulk of US 45 ID, as well as several tank and TD Rgts landed at Salerno and joined the battle north of the city.
US 82nd AirD made a combat drop north of the Salerno beachhead in an effort to outflank the German defenders between the beachhead and Naples. 509504 and 509 RCTs landed successfully, but 505 RCT was turned back by intense AA. No. 9 Commando made an amphibious landing on the beaches southeast of Naples in support.
2 PzRgt-16 PzD continued to give spirited resistance to the efforts of the British 56 ID in their attempts to advance southeast; however the Rgt lost 40 tanks during the half-week, leaving them with less than half of the strength they started September with.
The British managed to managed to enlarge their beachhead only marginally, facing stiff resistance from 2 PzRgt-16 PzD, and the 16th PzD's recon Batt.
The rest of 16 PzD (64 PzGrRgt and 79 PzGrRgt, plus HQ, arty, and recon elements) was roughed up by 139 IBgd-UK 46 ID and 23 ArmBgd-UK 7 ArmD.
The American 45 an 36 IDs advanced against lighter resistance and were aided by the combat drop of the US 82nd AirD.

East:
UK Naval Force 'H' has sailed to the east coast to support the advance of UK 1 AirD.
1 AirLanding Bgd-UK 1 AirD and 2 Bgds of British artillery landed at Bari to join UK 1 AirD's advance on Fogia.
1 AirD has reached the Cervaro south of Foggia, which it will attempt to cross in the next few days.

South:
CND 1 ArmBgd advanced about 80km, passing Lauria, and driving 26 PzD's HQ, engineers, and AA elements before it.
UK 5 ID broke up 26 PzD's recon and artillery units.
4 Princes Louise's Dragon Guards (CND I Corps' Recon Batt) ran into 26 PzD's 93 PzJgr Batt on the Agri river, as it drives on to link up with the Taranto supply point.

Turn 3 Sept 16-18, 1943

Intelligence suggests that the Germans are beginning to fortify the Gustav line, leaving only small delaying forces south of the line.

West:
With the road north of Salerno quite crowded, 142 and 143 IRgts-US 36 ID took the few days to rest as the battle moved north of them.
The remainder of US 45 ID (179 IRgt and the recon Batt) arrived at Salerno and bee-bopped their way up to the area held by the US 82nd AirD in order to facilitate some movement up there.
US VI Corsp continued to make good progress north of Salerno, with UK No. 9 Cmmndo taking Naples (Historically captured October 1) from HG PzD's recon Batt.
3rd/504 RCT-US 82 AirD captured Benevento.
64 and 79 PzGrRgts-16 PzD were both driven inside Allied lines.
PzRgt-16 PzD continued to give spirited resistance to the efforts of the British 56 ID in their attempts to advance southeast; however the Rgt lost 16 tanks and finally gave way in disorganization, retreating southwest of Auletta.
The Fascist Italian Nembo Rgt acquainted itself well, holding off UK 1st/23 ArmBgd-UK 7 ArmD for three days.

East:
UK V Corps forces have arrived at UK 1 AirD's position. V Corps engineers have repaired the bridge over the Ofanto at Barletta.
With the Salerno area so crowded and Foggia only lightly defended, UK 7 ArmD's HQ, 22 ArmBgd, and 131 Mot IBgd have been diverted to Bari to assist UK 1 AirD in their advance up the west coast.
As resistance on the R. Cervaro collapsed, 2 AirBgd-UK 1 AirD advanced into and past Foggia (historically captured Oct 1), liberating the city, and ending the half-week south of San Severo.

South:
UK 5 ID has taken the few days to rest up, while the Canadians pushed on, and CND 1 ArmBgd continued to push the remains of 26 PzD's engineers AA, and HQ along.

Centre:
No. 3 Commando Batt has discovered the strong 67 PzGrRgt-26 PzD in the mountains between the Salerno beachhead and UK 1 AirD. Needless to say, they've hunkered down to await reinforcement. It's expected that the Rgt will pull back, following FM McNiece's apparent plan of withdrawing to the Gustav Line.

Turn 4 Sept. 19-22

The Germans continue to withdraw to the Gustav Line, as even the 67 PzGrRgt-26 PzD has vanished. Further naval recon has revealed that Axis troops have no defensive positions below the Gustav Line.
The west coast of the Gustav Line is held by 15 PzGrD. The east coast would appear to be held by 3 PzGrD and 1 FJD

East:
3 US ID arrived at the recently liberated port of Naples.
US forces continued to slog northwards against surprising stiff resistance offered by small, disorganized German units.
The British, meanwhile, were forced to deal with many small pockets of remaining resistance from the former beach defenders and 26 PzD, from the south. With this mopping up finished, however, the British should be able to move up to the Gustav Line quite quickly.
One of these pockets contained 2 PzRgt-16 PzD, which finally surrendered after 2 weeks of bitterly contesting British advances; it had only 18 of the 80 tanks it started the month with still serviceable.
Another pocket contained 64 and 79 PzGrRgts-16 PzD, meaning that 16 PzD has been almost totally destroyed.

West:
2 AirBgd-UK 1 AirD entered Termoli (historically captured October 3, secured Oct 6)
11 Bgd-UK 78 ID was the first unit to be brought into Italy through the recently liberated port of Termoli.

Centre:
Weak German remnants remain and were kicked around quite a bit this half-week. They'll likely cause delays in the next half-week at Commonwealth troops try to reach their jumping off points for Operation Archer.

South:
CND 4 Princes Louise Dragoon Guards and UK 231 Bgd continue to tangle with th 26 PzD's TD Battalion near the R Cavone.
The first railroad engineers arrived in Italy this half-week. They'll make their way to Taranto, where they'll begin to repair the railroad from there to Termoli.

Plans:
Jonathan is definitely pinning all of his hopes on the Gustav Line. While it will certainly be a good defensive position for him, the fact that he has not tried to seriously delay me below this line means that I will be hitting the Gustav Line well before winter truly takes hold. Since that is the case, I'm going to give a really strong effort to crack the Gustav Line as soon as I can get my forces in place.

Operation Archer:
The start date is set for October 1. I'll be attacking at three main areas, Cassino, the roads in the middle of the Appenines, and Lanciano.
The attack at Cassino will be an all American affair, with every battalion of armour they have, plus likely US 3 and 34 IDs spearheading the attack. Other divisions will be holding the line left and right of the town, and 1 division, likely US 45 ID, being held in reserve to exploit any breakthrough.
The attack in the Appenines will be spearheaded by CND 1 ArmBgd, UK 4 ArmBgd, CND 1 ID, and IND 8 ID, with either UK 46 or 56 ID in reserve, with the one not selected holding the line between this attack and Lanciano.
The attack at Lanciano will be spearheaded by UK 7 ArmD and UK 78 ID, with NZ 2 being used to exploit any breakthrough.
US 82 AirD and UK 1 AirD will biovac at Salerno and Foggia, respectively, to add an airborne element to whichever attack makes progress first.

Turn 6 Sept. 26-29, 1943

German Dispositions:
The Germans appear to have the entire HG PzD and at least part of 29 PzGrD in reserve of his 15 PzGrD at Cassino.

Fifth Army:
The remainder of US 34 ID arrived at Naples and arrived at their new jumping off point.
US 82 AirD is now fully concentrated at Salerno airfield.
Recon has revealed that the slopes up to Monte Cassino from the southeast are too steep for regular infantry to attack usefully, so the attack plan for US VI Corps has been changed. The attack will now be along a 30km front over the R Garigliano from the west coast to Cassino. US 45 ID will be in reserve on the left and US 36 ID will hold the right flank and be in reserve for possible exploitation, as well. This will further give VI Corps two routes of advance, up Route 7 along the coast (US 34 ID), and Route 6 through Cassino (US 3 ID).

Reccon attacks were put in against Monte Cassino and up the Liri valley from Cassino by light US forces to asses enemy strength.
Besides the immediate defenders of Monte Cassino (I/115 PzGrRgt-15 PzGrD) HG PzRgt-HQ PzD and 71 PzGrRgt-29 PzGrD also joined the defence, meaning that not only does FM McNeice have the HG PzD in reserve of Cassino, he also has at least part of 29 PzGrD.
The recon up Route 6 saw no enemy reserves join the already defending II/115 PzGrRgt-15 PzGrD.

Eight Army:
UK 1 AirD is now fully concentrated at the airfields of Foggia. UK Royal Marines are now waiting at the port of Termoli.
UK 46 and 56 IDs, CND 1 ID, and IND 8 ID are all moving up, slowly, towards their jumping off points and may end up being up to a week behind the originally planned start date for their attack. UK 4 ArmBgd, meanwhile, has already arrived.
UK 7 ArmD and UK 78 ID got Operation Archer's Lanciano attack underway early, with attacks beginning at dawn on the 27th. Armoured support for both attacks was provided by 22 ArmBgd-UK 7 ArmD, as they were the only tanks available. These attacks were supported by 6 British artillery bgds (over 600 guns), plus the big guns of Force H's 2 battleships, and as much aircover as could be offered through the clear skies.
On UK 78 ID's front, the Irish (38) Bgd supported the tanks against 203 Rgt-76 ID, casualties were light on both sides and no progress was made.
On UK 7 ArmD's front, the Queen's (131) Bgd supported the tanks against II/4 FJRgt-1 FJD, casualties were light on both sides and no progress was made.
Progress proved slow over the river and through the poor terrain, and while no real progress was made, it did reveal that the reserves in the sector are light compared to the Cassino area, and hat 1 FJD is spread all over the front.
Further, I'd imagine this means that FM McNeice is expecting an attack only on the west coast, not on the east, and especially not up the middle.

Airforce:
Surprisingly, over 100 enemy fighters arrived over the battlefields of the Cassino area. Over 40 Allied aircraft were damaged in the dogfights, compared with only 7 reported Allied kills. This is because I have no aircraft assigned to air superiority, having them all assigned to close support.
Later in the half-week, this was corrected, with four wings being switched to air superiority.

T7 Sept 30-Oct 2, 1943

3 PzGrD has been identified as a reserve for the east coast.

Fifth Army:
Operation Archer-West has begun! Amid generally clear skies, US 34 and 3 IDs attacked the German lines along a 30km frontage.
34 ID led with 135 and 168 Rgts (supported by two battalions of tanks) attacking I/104 PzGrRgt-15 PzGrD.
3 ID led with 7 Rgt (supported by a battalion of tanks) attacking II/104 PzGrRgt-15 PzGrD and 15 Rgt (supported by two battalions of tanks) attacking I/115 PzGrRgt-15 PzGrD.
Light diversionary attacks were launched by other Fifth Army elements against Monte Cassino and just northwest of Montee Cassino to attempt to draw German reserves against that area, rather than the main assault.

Sept 30, Day 1:
The diversionary attacks succeeded in drawing in HGPzRgt-HGPzD and
15 Rgt's attack up Route 6 saw significant US casualties, especially in tanks, as 74 committed, 40 were put out of action in the first day. German casualties, on the other hand, were hardly worth mentioning.
7 Rgt's attack between Route 6 and 7 had the most successful first day, reducing II/104 PzGrRgt to 1/3 of its strength, while incurring very light casualties.
135 and 168 Rgt's attack up Route 7 reduced I/104 PzGrRgt by 1/5, taking light casualties.

Oct 1, Day 2:
15 Rgt's attack up Route 6 continued, causing light casualties, and again took heavy casualties in tanks, losing 24 of 48 that went in.
7 Rgt's attack between Route 6 and 7 saw success as bitter fighting saw US 813 TD Batt advance nearly 10km, piercing the Gustav Line! The defenders, II/104 PzGrRgt, were reduced by nearly half again.
135 and 168 Rgt's attack up Route 7 took heavy casualties, but ejected I/104 PzGrRgt and gained a valuable piece of the Gustav Line.

Oct 2, Day 3:
The depleted 15 Rgt was joined by the fresh 30 Rgt to continue the attack up Route 6, 37 tanks were rounded up to support the attack. US 30 Rgt was not up to the task, however as it quickly fell apart and evaporated. General Truscott (GOC, US 3 ID) was quick to remove Colonel Nedderson, who will be catching the next boat back the US. The worn out 15 Rgt was not enough to carry the day, and after a half-week of fighting, progress up Route 6 was nill. 30 Rgt will be repalced by 442 Rgt, currently under Fifth Army command.

Up Route 7, 168 Rgt were the only troops available to continue the fight on the third day. THey managed to dislodge the retreating I/104 PzGrRgt, but the well fortified 115 PzRgt held their ground and lost not a single tank. 168 Rgt took 40% casualties.

At the end of the half-week, the Americans can claim that they've gained more ground than the British, but facing more German reserves, and having worn themselves out more than their British counterparts, they are far less likely to cause a decisive breakthrough.

Eighth Army:
IND 8 ID, CND 1 ID, UK 46 ID, and UK 56 ID continued their efforts to get into position to launch Archer-Centre. UK 5 ID took the half-week to rest in anticipation of being the exploitation division for Archer-Centre.

Archer-Centre

Oct 1, Day 2:
4 ArmBgd, sensing a chance to rush the centre of the Gustav Line, put in a spirited attack against 1 FJD's engineers. They reduced the battalion by about half, though they lost 15 tanks in the process.

Oct 2, Day 3:
4 ArmBgd continued their attack, with no real result and light casualties on both sides.

Archer-West really got underway this half-week.

Sept 30, Day 1:
The Irish brigade's attack caused minor casualties and took minor casualties.
131 Bgd's attack caused minor casualties and took medium casualties.
36 Bgd's diversionary attack drew in only drew in 3 PzGrD's recon Batt, and took more casualties than intended, over 200 men.

Oct 1, Day 2:
The Irish bgd's attack continued, reducing 203 Rgt-76 ID by 1/4, taking light casualties itself.
131 Bgd's attack continued, reducing II/4 FJRgt-1 FJD by a third. The brigade lost half its own strength and 17 more tanks.
36 Bgd's diversionary attack was switched to a full scale effort and it reduced 178 Rgt-76 ID by half, but took 50% casualties itself, and was so disorganized that it could not continue fighting the third day.

Oct 2, Day 3:
The Irish Bgd's attack continued, drawing in another Rgt, this time 8 Mot Bgd-3 PzGrD, bring the total number of regiments fending it off to 2. They only inflicted light casualties, and only took light casualties.
11 Bgd-UK 78 ID took over 131 Bgd's position attacking along the coast, and the fresh bgd was enough to carry the day, as both 11 Bgd and II/22 ArmBgd advance about 10km up the coast road.
56 Recon Batt-UK 78 ID continued the diversionary attack, and although it, backed by heavy artillery, caused heavy casualties, it did not dislodge 178 Rgt-76 ID, and took heavy casualties.

At the end of the half-week the British can claim that they have pierced the Gustav line and worn two Rgts (178 and 203) of 76 ID into the ground, but their advance forces are now in a position vulnerable to counter-attack by 3 PzGrD.

Turn 8 Oct 3-6, 1943

Fifth Army:
Archer-East:
HG PzRgt-HG PzD put in a light counter-attack against US 26 ID, which has been conducting diversionary attacks east of Cassino for the exact reason of trying to keep German troops occupied, away from the main offensive.
Poor weather hampered tanks in the American sector, leaving the infantry to slog on ahead without armoured support.

Oct 3:
US 45 ID continued to rest south of the R. Garigliano.
The whole of US 34 ID was in action today.
Up Route 7 135 Rgt attacked II/129 PzRgt and 115 PzBatt, with the support of the armoured cars of 91 Cav Recon Batt. Nearly 30% infantry casualties were caused, but only one tank was knocked out, while the attacking infantry took 10% casualties.
Between Route 7 and 6 133 and 168 Rgts made a joint attack against HG 2 Rgt, causing and taking light casualties.
In heavy rain, up Route 6 Truscott's new 442 Rgt joined 7 Rgt in an attack against 15 PzGrD's I/115 PzRgt and 525 TDRgt, causing and taking light casualties.
15 Rgt continued diversionary attacks towards Monte Cassino, taking heavy losses while inflicting negligible losses on the enemy. With such a small return for so much blood, diversionary attacks against the Mountain will be ceased.
US 36 ID's 143 Rgt joined the division's 636 TDBatt in diversionary attacks northwest of Monte Cassino, taking and inflicting only light casualties.

Oct 4:
Up Route 7 135 Rgt attacked II/129 PzRgt and 115 PzBatt, again with the support of the armoured cars of 91 Cav Recon Batt. They took and inflicted only light casualties.
Between Route 7 and 6 133 and 168 Rgts continued their attack against HG 2 Rgt, taking and inflicting only light casualties.
In heavy rain, up Route 6 442 Rgt and 7 Rgt continued to attack 15 PzGrD's I/115 PzRgt and 525 TDRgt. The attack stuttered as heavy casualties (10%) were taken while they dished out only light casualties.
What were diversionary attacks northwest of Monte Cassino by US 36 ID's 143 Rgt with the division's 636 TDBatt became a full scale attack with the addition of 141 and 142 Rgts, from the southeast. Though the division took excessive casualties (380 of 2560 riflemen committed), they ejected all German defenders, but were unable to properly occupy their positions.

Oct 4:
Up Route 7 135 Rgt attacked II/129 PzRgt and 115 PzBatt, again with the support of the armoured cars of 91 Cav Recon Batt.
Between Route 7 and 6 133 and 168 Rgts continued their attack against HG 2 Rgt, inflicting and taking medium casualties.
In heavy rain, up Route 6 442 Rgt and 7 Rgt continued to attack 15 PzGrD's I/115 PzRgt and 525 TDRgt, taking and inflicting medium casualties.
141 Rgt was left all but depleted.

Oct 5:
Up Route 7 135 Rgt attacked II/129 PzRgt and 115 PzBatt, this time with the support of the armoured cars of 34 ID's Recon Cmpy, and the support of anti-armour armed US spitfires. They managed to knock out a few tanks and eject II/129 PzRgt.
Between Route 7 and 6 133 and 168 Rgts continued their attack against HG 2 Rgt, ejecting the Rgt, and seeing 168 Rgt advance.
In heavy rain, up Route 6 442 Rgt and 7 Rgt continued to attack 15 PzGrD's I/115 PzRgt and 525 TDRgt; anti-armour armed US spitfires were called in for support.
Having fought into the Gustav Line northeast of Cassino, only engineers were able to really enter the position. 36 ID's commander, Gen. Walker, decided to attempt to enlarge his breach and ordered his 141 and 142 Rgts to attack to the northeast of their already won lodgement. His two worn out Rgts managed to take almost 25% casualties while inflicting negligible casualties on I/3 FJRgt.

Oct 6:
Up Route 7 135 Rgt and 34 ID's recon Cmpy attacked the remaining 115 PzRgt. Only 1 enemy tank was destroyed, but only light casualties were taken, also.
In between Route 7 and 6, 168 Rgt dug in awaiting the expected German counterattack.
Up Route 6 442 Rgt continued to attack, joined by 133 Rgt (switching gears from their attacks between Route 7 and 6) and 15 Rgt, since 7 Rgt was too disorganized to continue attacks. Casualties were heavy (390 of 2420 [16%] Riflemen committed) for the attackers, light for the defenders, and no ground was gained.

Both hexes gained in the Fifth Army's sector are likely to be counter-attacked by German forces and I wouldn't be surprised if they were both retaken.

Eighth Army:

Oct 3:
UK 5 ID continued to rest south of Isernia as it prepared to follow up any successes of Archer-Centre.
CND 1 ID rested at Isernia, preparing to join the offensive in the coming days.
UK 46 ID arrived west of Archer-Centre and UK 56 ID arrived east of Archer-Centre, both preparing to hold their part of the line, or follow up success.
UK 4 ArmBgd broke into the Gustav line as they pushed back 1 FJD's engineers.
IND 8 ID has arrived at Archer-Centre's start line so they can begin supporting UK 4 ArmBgd.
In heavy rain, 6 Bengal Lancers-IND 8 ID attacked II/3 FJRgt-1 FJD, causing and incurring only light losses, and attracting the attention of HG PzRgt.

Oct 4:
In heavy rain, 6 Bengal Lancers-IND 8 ID attacked II/3 FJRgt-1 FJD, joined by UK 4 ArmBgd. They managed to eject II/3 FJRgt, but their place was quickly taken by HG PzRgt, which then inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers, with almost half of the 130 Allied tanks involved being knocked out, leaving 4 ArmBgd in a tough situation with only half of their tanks in action. Only 7 HG kills were confirmed.

Oct 5:
More of IND 8 ID's units were available to join the battle today.
IND 17 Bgd joined the Bengal Lancers and the very depleted UK 4 ArmBrg in renewed attacks against HG PzRgt, with the support of anti-armour armed spitfires. Only 6 of the enemy's 100 tanks were knocked out, compared to 105 of the attacking infantry and 14 of 72 tanks. It was enough, however, to convince HG PzRgt to give up their position, and UK 4 ArmBgd occupied the section of the Gustav Line.
IND 19 Bgd, supported by armoured cars of UK 56 ID's 44 ReconBatt and anti-armour armed spitfires attacked the engineers of 3 PzGrD. Fighting was bitter and the Indians dished out and received heavy casualties (470 of 1080 riflemen).

Oct 6:
IND 17 Bgd attacked up the northwest Appenine road. It was stopped by 1 FJD's Stugg Batt after taking nearly 25% casualties.
The wrecked IND 19 Bgd was joined by IND 21 Bgd for renewed attacks against the 3 PzGrD's engineers. Medium casualties were taken and light casualties dished out, but it was enough to oust the defenders and IND 19 Bgd occupied the vacated stretch of the Gustav Line.

IND 8 ID basically wrecked itself gaining their two captured hexes and with powerful German units in the second line of defence, I expect counterattacks against both hexes.
German reserves here seem pretty strong, but I have three divisions yet to be committed here (CND 1 ID, UK 46 and 56 IDs, though they are all pretty haggard.

Archer-West

Oct 3:
NZ 6 Bgd-NZ 2 ArmD arrived in Termoli, ready to be used in exploitation of any success from Archer-West.
36 Bgd-UK 78 ID continued diversionary attacks against I/29 Rgt-3 PzGrD, supported by the armoured cars of 78 ID's recon Batt, taking and causing light casualties.
The major attack of the day was conducted by 78 ID (38 Irish Bgd) and 7 ArmD (23 ArmBgd, I/22 ArmBgd, 11 Hussars ReconBatt, and re-introduced I/131 Queen's Bgd) against 8 Rgt-3 PzGrD and 203 Rgt-76 ID. The defenders suffered 15% casualties, while the attackers suffered light infantry casualties, but lost 22 of 200 tanks employed.
From the salient up the coast, in heavy rain, II/11 Bgd-78 ID and II/22 ArmBgd-7 ArmD continued to attack north, along Route 16, they were stopped cold, with 1/6 of the attacking tanks knocked out.
From the salient up the coast, I/11 Bgd-78 ID attacked northeast against I/67 PzGrRgt-26 PzD. Heavy defensive artillery supported halted the attack amid heavy losses.

Oct 4:
36 Bgd-UK 78 ID continued diversionary attacks against I/29 Rgt-3 PzGrD. Heavy defensive artillery fire stopped them in their tracks, with 15% casualties, severely disorganizing 36 Bgd so that they could not continue attacks.
The major attack of the day continued to be conducted by 78 ID (38 Irish Bgd) and 7 ArmD (23 ArmBgd, I/22 ArmBgd, 11 Hussars ReconBatt, and re-introduced I/131 Queen's Bgd) against 8 Rgt-3 PzGrD and 203 Rgt-76 ID. The results for the day were good and bad, with the Irish Bgd evaporating, and all German defenders save AA guns being ejected amid heavy German casualties. Allied casualties were also heavy, and 36 tanks were knocked out.
From the salient up the coast, in heavy rain, II/11 Bgd-78 ID and II/22 ArmBgd-7 ArmD continued to attack north, along Route 16, taking and inflicting light casualties.
From the salient up the coast, I/11 Bgd-78 ID attacked northeast against I/67 PzGrRgt-26 PzD, taking and inflicting light casualties.

Oct 5:
56 ReconBatt-78 ID continued diversionary attacks against I/29 Rgt-3 PzGrD, taking and receiving light casualties.
The major attack of the day continued to be conducted by 7 ArmD (23 ArmBgd, I/22 ArmBgd, 11 Hussars ReconBatt, and re-introduced I/131 Queen's Bgd) against the remaining AA guns. The attack was successful, with the AA guns quickly being brushed aside.
From the salient up the coast, in heavy rain, II/11 Bgd-78 ID and II/22 ArmBgd-7 ArmD continued to attack north, along Route 16, taking and receiving light casualties.
From the salient up the coast, I/11 Bgd-78 ID attacked northeast against I/67 PzGrRgt-26 PzD. The defenders lost a third of their 180 remaining riflemen, while I/111 Bgd took about equal losses.

Oct 6:
56 ReconBatt was joined in their previously diversionary attacks against I/29 PzRgt-3 PzGrD by 23 ArmBgd-7 ArmD. Though the area was cleared of enemy troops 56 ReconBatt evaporated and 23 ArmBgd, after losing 25 of 100 committed tanks, was unable to secure the area.
Northwest of Lanciano 7 ArmD's 131 Bgd and 11 Hussars ReconBatt attacked northwest, against 8 Rgt-3PzGrD, 178 and 203 Rgts-76 ID, and various support elements. Though they managed to eject 8 rgt and 203 Rgt, and inflict significant casualties, they could not clear the whole area.
North-northwest of Lanciano 7 ArmD's 22 ArmBgd and 78 ID's 11 Bgd attacked I/67 PzGrRgt-26 PzD. Casualties were light on both sides and no ground was gained.
The freshly committed NZ 6 Bgd-NZ 2 ArmD attacked up Route 16, fighting against 1 FJD's AT guns and 29 PzGrD's engineers. The New Zealanders, fresh from a long furlough in Egypt, made a sloppy attack, exacerbated by the heavy rain, which cost them almost 50% infantry casualties and not only failed to dislodge the enemy, but also failed to inflict significant casualties. GOC UK 7 ArmD, Gen Erskine, requested that Brigadier Parkinson be relieved. Gen. Montgomery, the only officer with the power to do so relieved Parkinson and I/6 Bgd's commander, Lt-Col Burrows, was quickly promoted and placed in command.

The only hex captured in this area is not likely to be retaken.
German reserves in this sector seem particularly weak, giving hope to a major breakthrough here, though, on the other hand, 7 ArmD, 78 ID, and now NZ 6 Bgd are all pretty well running out of steam. UK 5 ID will likely be brought over to this sector and would arrive at about the same time as the rest of NZ 2 ID (turn 10) and could arrive just in time to keep the momentum going.

Vulnerable hexes marked in red with likely directions of attack.

168 Rgt-US 34 ID, between Route 7 and 6, was forced back.
US 45 ID continues to rest south of the Garigliano.
The weather again allowed the use of tanks along Fifth Army's front.

Turn 10 Oct 10-13, 1943

Fifth Army:
143 Rgt-US 36 ID pushed back a few stuggs holding the mountains northeast of Cassino, fighting their way into the Gustav Line.
As US 34 ID is now reorganizing after their hard battles on and over the Garigliano, US 45 ID has been rotated into the line to take up the struggle.
US 45 ID attacked up Route 7, towards Terracino. They took 1/3 casualties in their first day back in action, but made up for this mid-week, evaporating II/64 PzGrRgt-16 PzD and advancign 10km.
157 RGt-US 45 ID managed to advance 10km between Routes 7 and 6.
US 3 ID continued to attack up Route 6, taking heavy casualties, ejecting I/115 PzGrRgt-15 PzGrD, and advancing up Route 6 for the first time.
With Monte Cassino now outflanked, both US 3 ID and US 36 ID committed elements to an attack on the fortress from both the southwest and northeast. The main defenders of the mountain, II/115 PzGrRgt-15 PzGrD and some engineers, managed to hold the mountain, though they took heavy casualties, but newer additions to the defence, such as I/115 PzGrRgt were ejected. The attackers took about 1/3 infantry casualties, and lost 30 of 104 tanks committed.
The depleted US 36 ID was joined in their attacks northeast of Monte Cassino by 128 and 138 Bgds-UK 46 ID, taking another section of the Gustav Line. They took heavy casualties. Another combined attack saw another 10km advance.

Eighth Army:
90th PzGrD has arrived along Eighth Army's front.
Archer-Centre:
German counter-attacks ejected IND 19 Bgd and the 6 Lancers, leaving 44 Recon-UK 56 ID cut-off.
2 Bgd-1 CND ID attacked up the west Appenine Rd, fighting 1 FJ StG Batt. They managed to destroy 10 tanks, eject the Batt, taking heavy casualties in the process.
CND 1 Arm Bgd northwest, up the west Appenine Rd, attacking 2 HG Inf Rgt-HG PzD. They ended up taking heavy casualties, and in the middle of the half-week had to reorganize themselves before launching further attacks. 2 Bgd-1 CND ID continued attacks, but also failed to make progress.
1 Bgd-CND 1 ID attacked 15 PzGrRgt-29 PzGrD, between the west and east Appenine Rds. They took heavy casualties and made no progress on the first day. Later they were joined in their attacks by 3 Bgd-1 CND ID, they managed to eject 15 PzGrRgt, but other elements of other units held the line.
103 PzBatt-3 PzGrD, the unit that cut off 44 Recon, was attacked from all sides by 44 Recon, 3 CND Bgd-1 CND ID, and 6 Lancers-IND 8 ID. The attackers took light casualties, and ejected 103PzBatt, destroying 11 tanks.
21 Bgd-8 IND ID and 167 Bgd-UK 56 ID attacked the engineers of 76 ID and 3 PzGrD and II/29 Mot InfRgt-3 PzGrD. They inflicted heavy casualties, but also managed to advance.
167 Bgd-UK 56 ID attacked I/29 M Rgt-3 PzGrD, taking medium casualties and failing to advance.

Archer-East:
11 Bgd-UK 78 ID was forced back from the gates of Pescara.
22 AmrBgd-UK 7 ArmD and 11 Bgd-UK 78 ID attacked 8 Mot InfRgt-3 PzGrD and 129 PzBatt-29 PzD. THey took light casualties, ejected all defenders, but failed to advance.
131 Bgd and 23 ArmBgd-UK 7 ArmD attacked 9 PzGrRgt and 176 PzJagerBatt 26 PzD and 178 Rgt-76 ID. They ejected 9 PzGrRgt and evaporated 176 PzJagerBatt and 178 Rgt. They also took heavy casualties and advanced 10km.

NZ 6 Bgd continued to show that with a new commander, they're a top unit, as they drove back 29 PzGrD's engineers along the coast road, advancing 10km, and then followed up by ejecting 129 PzGrRgt-29 PzGrD and 145 and 146 Rgts-65 ID from their positions, finding themselves at the gates of Pescara, having advanced 20km in the half week.

The addition of the fresh-ish US 45 ID and elements of NZ 2 ArmD have really helped the advance. In two and a half weeks I'll get the new US 1 ArmD to throw in but likely by that time the battle for the Gustav Line will likely already be decided.
Strong German units (some rated higher than anything I have) are littered throughout the German line, so even though it appears the Germans are collapsing, they have a lot of fight left. It'll be fun to see how FM McNeice is feeling about his situation right now.

Turn 11 Oct 14-16, 1943

Fifth Army:
US 45 ID elements were thrown back 10km along the coast.
30 Rgt-US 3 ID has rejoined its division.
US 34 ID, after reorganizing over the last few days, remained idle to regain some strength while US 45 ID continues the advance they started along the coast.
US 45 ID continued to advance up the coast and up Route 7.
Up the coast they regained the territory they held briefly over the last few days, and then advanced another 10km.
They managed to eject I/129 PzGrRgt-15 PzGrD and advance 10km up Route 7, then continued to advance another 10km.
US 3 and 36 IDs contined their attacks on Monte Cassino. They fought hard and ejected all the defenders , including II/115 PzGrRgt-15 PzGrD, and took the mountain top.
US 3 ID continued its advance up Route 6, ejecting 71 PzGrRgt-29 PzGrD, and advancing another 10km.
US 3 ID then followed up with attacks by 7 Rgt between Routes 7 and 6 which ejected all defenders save 7 FJRgt-2 FJD.
US 36 ID also attacked the mountains north of Monte Cassino. They inflicted heavy casualties, and managed to take the 10km squared north of Monte Cassino.

Eighth Army:
German counter-attacks all along the front failed, even the one against 44 Recon.

Archer-Centre
CND 1 ID, supported CND 1 ArmBgd, attacked up the west Appenine Rd and between West and East Appenine Rds.
Up the west road the defending 2 Rgt-HG PzD was ejected and the Canadians advanced 10km.
Up the middle II/3 FJ Rgt evaporated as Canadian troops took the peak.
INF 8 ID attacked up the east Appenine Rd and just east of the Rd.
They failed to make progress up the east Rd, but east of the road, they managed to get next to Sulmona.

Archer-East
NZ 2 ArmD's 5 Bgd and 4 ArmBgd arrived north of Lanciano, ready to join the fight in the next few days.
36 Bgd-UK 78 ID attacked the last piece of Gustav Line still occupied by German troops off of Monte Cassino, on the extreme left of the Archer-East penetration, evaporating II/203 Rgt-76 ID in their taking of the line.
23 ArmBgd-UK 7 ArmD attacked 8 mot Rgt-3 PzGrD on the left of the Archer-East penetration. They inflicted heavy casualties, but did not advance. Later they were joined by 131 Queen's Bgd, which tipped the balance, allowing an advance of 10km by the Queen's bgd.
11 Bgd-UK 78 ID and 22 ArmBgd-UK 7 ArmD ejected 145 Rgt-65 ID in the centre of the penetration, incurring heavy casualties in the effort and advancing 10km.
11 Bgd then continued their success, attacking 145 and 146 Rgts-65 ID (as well as other elements). They ejected 146 Rgt, evaported 145 Rgt and advanced, cutting the lateral road running along the R. Pescara between the Germans defending Pescara and the Germans defending against Archer-Centre!
2 Cav-2 NZ ArmD and 5 Recon-UK 5 ID attacked west of Pescara, ejecting I/361 PzGrRgt-90 PzGrD, but failing to advance.
6 Bgd-NZ 2 ArmD attacked Pescara, defended by 147 Rgt-65 ID and I/67 PzGrRgt-26 PzD. Their attack faltered until the Bgd was joined by NZ 2 Cav, at which time the New Zealanders battled their way into the city, ejecting the battered German defenders.

Casualty Report:
During the first six turns, the turns I was not facing the Gustav Line, I lost 1,000 Rifle Squads.
During the last six turns, the turns I have been facing the Gustav Line, I've lost 2200 Rifle Squads.
This cannot be sustained, but that fact may not matter as the Gustav Line is broken, and a breakout may be happening.

The Gustav Line is now entirely Allied occupied. There is a real risk for FM McNeice that he will completely lose control of the situation on the east coast if he is not able to pull off a near miracle in the next turn or two.

Turn 11

Turn 11 and 10 compared.

Turn 12 Oct 17-20, 1943

Fifth Army:
With the breakout on the east coast, the American effort has been shut down. They will hold their current positions save attempts to take a couple hexes to straighten the line) to rest up and prevent assisting the Germans in any attempt to retreat.
US 34 and 36 IDs have been withdrawn and have begun to transfer to the east coast to support the breakout.
US 45 ID managed to grab their hex from 7 FJRgt-2 FJD.
US 3 ID managed to grab their hex from 1 HG InfRgt-HG PzD.

Eighth Army:
Archer-Centre:
Attacks here have been pretty well shut down, with UK 46 and 56 IDs being withdrawn to support the breakout and CND 1 ID and IND 8 ID staying behind.
The Canadians managed to eject 2 HG InfRgt-HG PzD and 103 PzBatt-3 PzGrD, advancing 10km up the west Appenine Rd.

Archer-East:
Breakout. 4 ArmBgd and 5 Bgd-NZ 2 ArmD have advanced to the R. Tordino, with 4 ArmBgd capturing a bridge over the river, and hostilely de-training the PzBatt and EngBatt of 90 PzGrD.

UK 7 ArmD, not in a position to act as a pursuit division, will continue to attack the Germans on the left flank of the breakout. Their efforts saw the evaporation of 8 Mot InfRgt-3 PzGrD, 129 PzBatt-29 PzGrD, and other elements.

Notes:
There's two things I'd do here if this was not a playtest.
A) Land my two commando Battalions at Ancona, followed up by an ID I would have placed at a port.
B) Landing my two Airborne Divisions between the breakout and the west coast, cutting off and trapping all of Jonathan's troops.
What I will do is what I want to have run by TOs, in that I'll 'activate' the non existent TO's to land troops not next turn, but the turn after.

And a picture says a thousand words:

Turn 13 Oct 21-23, 1943

FM McNeice has made a wise choice in mostly withdrawing from the Gustav Line. It would appear he is planning on making his next stand on the Caesar Line.

Fifth Army:
Fifth Army has renewed their offensive all along the line since most of the German defenders have withdrawn.
On the coast, Terricina was taken.

Eighth Army:
The breakout continues, with US and New Zealand troops planning to head on, towards Ancona, while the British break off, left, and head towards Rome.
