From the war diary of the 7th Canadian Infantry brigade
June 9th 1944
"Just after we arrived calls came from Lt-Col Gordon for artillery support on St Contest where there were mortars and 88s firing. It is suspected that there is a OP in the church steeple. Fire support was not long in coming. First we got our own div arty. Then we called 3 Br Infantry Div on our left and they brought down all their div arty. Then we called for air and 24 Typhoons came over and bombed and strafed the place 4 times. It is unlikely that Gerry in St Contest was very happy."
No kidding. That is 7 regiments of SP 105mm and 4 regiments of towed 25 pounders. Something in the order of 244 guns shooting up a small town.
