At $299, I think I'll stick with something less garish, like this Roman gladiator chess set.

Or this Marine Corps versus Navy chess set.

Heck, for $150, I could have this "mini-Giant" chess set. Not as cool as the Giant chess set, though. :surprise:

The more I play with 'custom' chess sets, the more I want to play with 'normal' pieces.

The only exception to this might be with XiangQi / Chinese Chess, which takes me a while to remember some of the pieces if it's been a while since the last time I've played...

I agree. Many aspects of chess have been compared to "art" and I think Staunton-styled pieces are definitely that. They have an elegant class about them that is quite unique. There is nothing quite so inviting as a high-sheen wood Staunton chess set.
