We separate from the armored cruisers so that we can cover a larger area.

We wish them good hunting as we sail north along the west coast of Japan!

You sank my battleship!

Admiral's Log, Battleship Retvizan
February 14, 1904

We are tired of the Greyhounds constant presence off Port Arthur. We can make no move unobserved, and only our battleships dare face them!

I resolve to set out tonight and hope to bring them to close action!

2219 34 km SSE of Port Arthur
I am leading the battleships Retvizan, Pobyeda, Peresvyet, Sevastopol and Poltava. Tsesarevich and Petropavlovsk are still in the dockyards hands.
I bring no smaller ships, so that we may fire freely!

We see four ships approaching! A cruiser leading!

But, wait! The second in line is no cruiser! It is a battleship!

These are not the greyhounds!

We have not seen these ships before!

Well, an old, pathetic battleship, but a battleship nonetheless...

It is the Chin Yen, a Japanese prize from the Sino-Japanese war.

An old German built turret ship, she stills mounts four 305 mm guns!

And the three cruisers are not ordinary cruisers, they are armed with heavier guns than us! Each of them has a single 320 mm Canet gun.

This must be a bombardment force, not a reconnaissance force!

But we are far more than they bargained for! They turn to flee, but they are no Greyhounds, and we are very close!

I divide our force, turning Retvizan slightly to starboard followed by Pobyeda,
Sevastopol leads Poltava to port, and Peresvyet in the rear, charges straight for them!

We are faster and more powerful, and despite hits from Chin Yen's 305 mm, and the cruisers powerful Canet guns, we have all of them heavily damaged and Hasidate sinking after ten minutes.

Retvizan and Sevastopol turn away to fight fires, while the other three finsh the job. Another five minutes and the cruisers are all sinking.

Three minutes after that, Chin Yen, begins to settle.

Six minutes more and they are all beneath the waves.

Damage report:

Despite the slow rate of fire of their Canet guns, their 120 mm guns did fire rapidly, and at this range, one could hardly miss!

Sevastopol: 7% starboard flooding, 1% propulsion, 1 152 mm turret destroyed.
Retvizan: 3% port flooding, 1 152 mm mount destroyed.
Pobyeda: 6% port flooding, 1 152 mm mount destroyed.
Peresvyet: 8% port, 1% starboard flooding, 1 75 mm mount destroyed.
Poltava: 2% starboard flooding.

Note: Peresvyet and Poltava were not fully repaired, but I was right to bring them!

They shall not bombard Port Arthur tonight!

First my wife's birthday, and now Valentine's Night!

How uncivilized!

We turn back to Port Arthur for repairs.

Last night, at 2327 Lyena captured the freighter Colburne.

This morning, we had additional successes:

0114 Askold & Novik sink an A class Maru of 6000 tons 127 km NW of Hiroshima.

0120 Bogatyr seizes the 4500 ton steamer Duseldorf and then defeats the Koto Maru, and sinks a B class Maru, also 4500 tons 60 km NW of Mikuni.

0243 Askold & Novik sight a freighter of 6000 tons. DD Boiki captures her.

0654 Angara sights City of Chester (6000 tons) and Celebes (4500 tons), but the gunboat Oshima complicates matters.

0744 City of Chester surrenders.

1013 Oshima is sinking.

1014 Angara is hit by 152 mm shells from the sinking Oshima, final damage:
1% port flooding, 2% starboard flooding, 2% searchlights, 2 75 mm mounts damaged. No casualties.

1026 Celebes is sighted again.

1034 Oshima sinks.

1148 Angara captures Celebes, 54 km NW of Fukuoka.

Lyena and the torpedo boats

Captain's Log, Auxilliary Cruiser Lyena
February 15, 1904

1148 We sight the freighter Eidelborn of 3000 tons, but to the northwest we see fifteen enemy torpedo boats! They turn towards us!

1152 I decide to give up pursuit of the Eidelborn and instead proceed west through the Tsugaru Straight. When we came east, we slipped through at night. What will we find? Or rather, what will find us? There is a large base at Ominata just south of us.

1216 the enemy TBs are pursuing us into the straights.

1231 We are fired on by the leading TBs at 3300m.
We return fire.

1234 TB Hibari is heavily damaged. We target TB Sagi.

1236 TB Sagi is heavily damaged. The enemy turns back, except for Hibari.

Hibari sinks slowly as we pull away, going under at 1301.

Range to the enemy is 26200 m.

1321 We are 27 km ESE of Hakodate when we lose sight of the enemy.

Screenshot note: despite the titles, this is the Lyena's kill.

Lyena and the torpedo boats, part deux

Captain's Log, Auxilliary Cruiser Lyena
February 15, 1904

1347 Twenty-six minutes after breaking away from the pursuit from the east, we sight another group of fifteen TBs to the south.

1352 We dare not return to the east, lest we become caught between the two groups! I also fear being caught against the shore close to the north.
So, I turn south toward the enemy to gain sea room when I break to the west.

12 km, 11km, 10km, 9km, at 8640m, I set course 225! It is 1402.

We are making 19 knots, only a few of the enemy are faster than 20 knots.

Their flags are the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 12th TB divisions.

1410 The enemy opens fire at 2640m. We return fire, heavily damaging TB 45.

1412 TB 46 is heavily damaged.

1414 TB 37 is sinking.

1417 TB 55 is taking on water.

1426 TB 45 sinks.

1430 We resume fire after a brief pause, damaging TB 38, who turns away.

1441 TB 46 sinks.

1443 TB 37 sinks. TB 38 takes a 120 mm near the waterline as she turns away.

We break free at 1500! The enemy has lost another 5 boats!

We exit the straights to the west!

Gamers note: We are drawn back in twice more, to no effect as we continue west.

A convoy

Admiral's Log, Armored Cruiser Gromoboi
February 15, 1904

1522
We sight a small convoy, a 3000 ton freighter and the Yamaguchi Maru!

I tell off Ryurik to chase the freighter, and go after the Yamaguchi Maru.

1639 We sight a D class Maru to the east! Perhaps all three were sailing together.

Yamaguchi Maru sinks at 1651. The freighter surrenders as Ryurik is close, and she sees no other aid. The range to the other Maru is 29 km.

1704 We lose the Maru in the failing light. A pity!

We sight another 6000 ton freighter, but lose her as the sun sets.

Bogatyr encounters Torpedo Boats

Captain's Log, Protected Cruiser Bogatyr
February 16, 1904

0946 We sight fourteen enemy torpedo boats bearing WSW on a northerly course. I decide to engage them. They turn to flee! I order 23 knots on course 244!

These torpedo boats are not the fastest, and one is already damaged (Later determined to be Sagi, damaged by Lyena).

We sweep down on them from behind, destroying four 18 knot boats (1st TB division, TB 67-70). Two other groups maneuver on our flanks as we pursue the leaders.

We destroy the starboard group as they approach, then the port division, steering to starboard to avoid possible torpedo launches.

Finally, at about 1125 we fire on the leaders: Sagi, Hashitaki and Azura.

At 1150, the last boat, Hashitaki, sinks.

These were the 1st, 15th, 20th and 21st TB divisions.

C. Arakawa, N. Nakegawa, M. Saeki, and O. Kondo perish.

We lost 82 men, 1% flooding each side, 66% searchlights. Two 47mm and two torpedo mounts are damaged.

Shortly thereafter, we cheer the brave Varyag as she passes us on her new Voyage!

We sail for Vladivostok for ammunition, repairs and replacements.

Looking great!
I have the first version of RJW, but I am going to have to get ver. 1.5 that is for sure.
This game RJW gave me more fun than I have had in Navel games in years, and I miss playing it. Looks like I am going to have to decide what to get and to save for.
RJW 1.5 or the ship pack for Jutland. Oh this is a killer as I do like them both and I am having a blast playing Jutland.
But I have to say that I am being pulled to RJW, I really miss the close in fighting and the hunt for the Japanese on the high sea's . And the Running as fast as I could to get away from the whole Japanese fleet as they would show up when I did not think they would.
The strategy of pulling the Japanese into the fight and taking out there ships a few at a time so you could manage the battle in till my fleet came from Russia. I have to say that this was one game that kept me playing, over and over.

Daedalus,

Thanks! Speaking of showing up when you least expect them, check the next post! I agree, this is an amazing game, the commerce raiding aspect is very exciting, because you never know what is over the horizon, or worse, lurking in the dark.

It will be easier for my cruisers as the days grow longer.

I plan to buy the ship pack too, but I'd definitely go with DG 1.5 first (obviously). Maybe I'll have the Americans help when I do my next campaign, as the full 1916 British campaign (more to try them out than because I'm looking for extra help).

But, I'll be busy here for quite some time I think. After all, I only played about a week and a half, out of a year and a half campaign! On the other hand, I've been taking out merchants and Marus like crazy! I calculate that I may have 20-25% of what I need.

But, if they send out more of their top of the line ACs, it may not be so easy!

Dawn encounter

Commodore's Log, Protected Cruiser Askold
February 17, 1904

Before the new day dawns, we have a new contact:

The Armored Cruisers Yakumo and Adzuma!

I think that the lookouts have soiled themselves!

It is 13 minutes until dawn, the range is 4639 m from Boiki to Yakumo.

I thank all that is holy, that I thought to deploy our destroyer screen at a distance. They are ahead of us to the east. Visibility is 6.4 km and increasing!

We put the helm hard over and ring up flank speed! We fire as we flee, Yakumo is hit for minor damage.

0624 Boiki is hit by a 203 mm shell immediately, and then by a 76 mm.

0627 Boiki is hit by more 76 mm and a 152 mm shell.

0629 More hits, Boiki is sinking.

They fire at us, but the range is too great.

0658 Boiki sinks.

0712 We break contact at range 12462 m.

0817 We sight the Yakumo and Adzuma again!

0847 We withdraw to the north east of some islands, 164 km WNW of Maizuru.

As we do, we see a glorious sight! Gromoboi, Rossiya & Ryurik's smoke plumes approaching from the east! We knew that they were heading towards us, but hadn't expected to see them yet!

The enemy heads off to the WSW. We could pursue, but that's not why we're here. And they'd be hard to catch in any case.

Gamer's note: I saved this, as it might be fun to play out sometime, hence the AC battle save which I declined to fight in the campaign.

Joint Task Force

Admiral's Log, Armored Cruiser Gromoboi
February 17, 1904

We sight the Protected Cruisers Askold and Novik with two destroyers, out of Port Arthur. They report an encounter with two Japanese armored cruisers, Yakumo & Adzuma. We are 172 km WNW of Maizuru.

They join us and we reverse course to head north along Japan's west coast.

1018 Yakumo & Adzuma are sighted, but turn away.

1135 We sight Yakumo & Adzuma again. They are shadowing us, and seem to cruise at 18 knots! We alter our formation to line abrest behind the destroyers, to be ready for a night action.

1158 Yakumo & Adzuma are back, but we also detect the 4500 ton steamer Glamorgan. Yakumo & Adzuma flee and the destroyer Boyevoi captures Glamorgan 102 km NW of Maizuru.

I order all crews to be ready for a night action as Yakumo & Adzuma continue to shadow us.

Varyag pursues torpedo boats

Captain's Log, Protected Cruiser Varyag
February 17, 1904

1239 We encounter a group of ten Torpedo boats of the 3rd, 6th and 12th TB divisions. We pursue the enemy, and the flee to the west. All of us have an abiding hatred of the enemy's TBs, and their destruction will help blind the enemy.

Their divisions divide during their flight, so we pursue the southernmost division, hoping to catch the others afterward.

We destroy TBs 50, 51, 52, 53. TB 50 is the last, and her rudder jams at the end.

1756 We are now 223 km WNW of Niigata. No other TBs are in sight.

Port Arthur sightings

Admiral's Log, Port Arthur
February 18, 1904

Vladivostok reports that Bogatyr's repairs have been completed.

The old armored cruiser Fuso and her escort, the Takao continue to lurk about Port Arthur, to the northwest,, observing our movements.

We send out eight destroyers to refresh the minefields at Weihaiwei and the Elliot Islands. Fuso and Takao pursue, but are too slow to interfere.

The shore batteries take a few shots at extreme range, but no hits are observed.

Gamer's Note: This was actually a series of six desultory actions, where we "dragged" Fuso and Takao SE, as we left Port Arthur. In the last battle, Statni actually entered Port Arthur. The shore batteries were now silent, in broad daylight, confirming that shore batteries not engaged at the beginning of an action will not enter the action, and do not even exist in the battle.

The batteries were present and even got off a few shots in an early battle, but when we returned to PA in the final action, the guns didn't even exist!

Cruiser Action!

Admiral's Log, Armored Cruiser Gromoboi
February 18, 1904

We are sailing north, planning to return to Vladivostok for fuel, ammunition and engine overhaul.

1240 We sight a large cruiser force about 20 km to the west on a parallel course. They appear to be older cruisers, so I turn from our line abreast formation to line astern with Gromoboi leading and Novik and Askold at the rear. The destroyers are ordered to the rear flanks.

The enemy turns to meet us. They steer 89, 17 knots.

1254 I adjust our course directly at them, but they flinch to port! They open fire at 13 km. We continue to close under fire, but hold our own fire.

1259 I order heading 186, and order our ships to open fire as they turn!
I signal Askold and Novik to turn north instead.

1300 We have crossed their T! We concentrate our fire on the lead enemy, the Armored Cruiser Chiyoda.

1305 Gromoboi and Askold are hit, temporarily knocking out 152 mm mounts.
I order an immediate turn north to the ACs, to maintain our position on top of the T! We distribute fire on the first three enemies, Chiyoda, Naniwa and Niitaka.

1307 Chiyoda is moderately damaged.

1310 We reverse again to the south, Askold at our rear, Novik a few hundred meters on the unengaged side, but firing through a gap. Chiyoda falters to the south.

1312 As we finish our turn, Chiyoda is sinking. Range is 3645 m.
Gromoboi & Rossiya target Naniwa.
Ryurik, Askold & Novik target Niitaka.

1315 Naniwa is moderately damaged, making 12 knots. We begin another immediate turn north.

1317 About 70% through the turn, Naniwa is heavily damaged and Chiyoda has sunk. Our damage is light.

1319 We are heading north, Niitaka turns a few points to port to avoid Naniwa.
Askold and Ryurik target Niitaka.
Gromoboi and Rossiya target Takachiho.
Novik targets Naniwa.

1322 Niitaka and Takachiho have medium damage, Naniwa heavy. We observe that the three rear enemy cruisers are turning away! We turn west, in succession, ACs closest to the enemy, PCs a little further north.

1326 Gromoboi fires a torpedo at Naniwa, Takachiho is sinking, Niitaka and Naniwa are very badly damaged. Akashi has been hit.

1328 Niitaka is sinking.

1329 Takachiho sinks. Enemy flees on heading 230. We pursue.

1331 Askold is taking hits from 152 mm shells (and probably a lot of 120 mm).

This is where I make my error. Askold has increased speed, and is now taking fire from the remaining enemy effectives. I realize this too late!

1332 Niitaka sinks. I order Askold to turn away, as she has serious fires.
I order general chase to the ACs!

1342 Askold's fires rage out of control! She is heavily damaged.

1346 ACs turn to port to bring their less damaged starboard batteries to bear.

1347 Gromoboi has heavily damaged Akashi.

1349 Askold is lost, Novik takes off the remaining crew.

We pursue the enemy, but while our ships, other than Askold, are only lightly damaged, many gun positions are out of action.

1406 Akashi and Akitsushima are sinking!

1411 Akitsushima sinks.

Ryurik is coming up on their port side, Rossiya on their starboard, with Gromoboi coming from astern.

Only Suma and Idzumi remain, but it is a slow process, as Ryurik and Rossiya have few guns in action, and Gromoboi has to catch up after finishing Akashi.

Suma and Idzumi concentrate mostly on Ryurik, and the battle turns slowly to port, as they try to close with Ryurik, while moving away from Rossiya.

But they can't adjust much, lest Gromoboi close faster.

Gromoboi still has most guns in action and begins firing as she closes.

1420 Askold is listing 13 degrees to port.

1421 Suma is heavily damaged.

1425 Askold sinks.

1428 Idzumi is heavily damaged. Suma is listing to port.

1442 Suma sinks, Idzumi lists to port.

1448 Idzumi is sinking. We cease fire and set course 302 for Vladivostok.

1456 Idzumi sinks.

We are 182 km NW of Sakata.

We sank all eight of their cruisers, but lost Askold.

Their only survivor is the destroyer Asagiri, which fled early on.

She shadows us.

Commentary on the cruiser battle

This battle played out pretty much as I had planned, except that I was a little over-eager with Askold as the pursuit began, and didn't watch her status closely enough. Again, as with the Petropavlovsk, I got burned by the fire! It doesn't take long for it to rage out of control on these ships!

My main strategy of crossing their T, and then sitting on it with repeated Gefectskehrtwendungs worked perfectly, keeping me in front, only engaging their leading three ships and switching my starboard and port batteries to keep more guns firing.

I probably should have taken my time chasing them, so that my crews could repair more mounts, but I didn't have a very large speed advantage, other than Askold and Novik, and I didn't want them to escape at nightfall.

Other than Askold's loss, I wasn't hurt all that much, except that Ryurik had both port 203mm mounts destroyed. I hope that Vladisvostok can reapir those before too long.

I was also glad that I had passed up the earlier pursuit of Yakumo and Adzuma, even though they would have been more valuable kills.

My suspicion is that even if I won against them, I'd have been pretty shot up, making this battle a much more dangerous proposition.

I like the Russian armored cruisers, but the lack of turrets means that you lose gun mounts pretty easily.

Not too surprising, since I did find a photo of one of Gromoboi's 75 mm guns, and it looked like it was just sitting right out there on the edge of the deck, with no protection at all.

Most of the time the guns get damaged and you lose crew, but will be repaired after a little time. My battle turns helped by presenting a fresh battery, so that at least in the beginning, I didn't lose too much firepower.
