COLD WAR concept: Project 1143.7 class. 12 deg ski-jump, angled flight deck with two catapults. First unit Ulyanovsk cancelled in 1991 with work 40-45 percent complete. Broken up and sold for scrap in 1992. Above in-service date assumes ship was completed. Second unit never laid down, but possibly could have entered service in about 1997. Estimated air wing: 27 Su-33 Flanker D, 10 Su-25 Frogfoot, 4 Yak-44 AEW (under construction), 18 Ka-29PL Helix A, 2 Ka-27PS Helix C (three deck-edge elevators and two catapults)

BB Wisconsin USN 08
Hypothetical platform: The US Marines are continually screaming for more shore bombardment capabilities. Congress finally listened and gave the Navy a mandate to bring back one of the Iowa-class ships. With the noises currently being made by Iran and N. Korea, the threat of another mid-intensity conflict was too great to ignore. Both nations had long coastlines.
The Navy decided to use the Wisconsin because of her burnt-out B turret. It was too expensive to modify the superstructure for AEgis. And, with the perceived need, the range given by SM-2's was not warranted. B turret was pulled to install a 32 cell MK41 VLS with a loadout of 16 cells for ESSM Quad Packs, giving 64 missiles total, and the remaining 16 cells for TLAM-E's to the support of Marines ashore. These were in addition to the TLAM already in the box launchers. With ESSM, all that was needed were a few illumination radars.
For short range, 2x 21 shot RAM launchers were added on the fantail where the old 40mm tubs were. The Mk-15's were upgraded to Blk 1B for close range and use against small manouvering surface craft. Since the ships went into reserve in '92, senior ratings are still available to train a new crew. (Hypothetical platform for Eric [Accuracy13])

New additions to the PlayersDB

We've released a new version of the Harpoon3 PlayersDB. Today’s date is 07-04-07, so the new edition is PlayersDB 7.4.7

Why have we done this? Why not just continue to add new platforms to previous PlayersDB editions like we've always done? This release is to accommodate changes implemented in the Harpoon3 ANW game engine that were causing problems for PlayersDB users. Incompatibility issues arose and have now been rectified with this new release and through the use of the Official AGSI Harpoon ANW Database editor.

The main problem between H3 and ANW was the fact that diesel submarines behaved differently in the new ANW game engine. As subs changed depths, their engines would shut down and they would stop moving. A solution has been found that is compatible with both versions.

Rather than run the risk of messing up someone's prior work, we've released a new version. Just continue to use the PlayersDB version specified by the scenario designer and everything will run exactly as written by the author.

Get the PlayersDB 7.4.7-ANW on Gamesquad, HarpDB, or PlayersDB Depot.

Get the PlayersDB 7.4.7 on Gamesquad, HarpDB, or PlayersDB Depot.

The unique features and advantages of the PlayersDB remain unchanged and include:

  • A design philosophy of "Never delete - only append" .

No more crash concerns due to rock-solid stability.

  • Ships, planes, and subs have been indexed by country for your convenience

  • Players can now see the launch altitude of the weapons.

No more guessing at the launch parameters.

  • Numerous special weapons and special platforms for designers.

If you would like to see a special capability or platform for your scenario, let us know and it will be added for you. There is ample room for specialty units and player requests. One player has already been accommodated. He wanted to try Soviet Sub-Launched Land Attack missiles from Charlie-class SSGNs so we modified the torpedo tubes to allow him to test this new feature.

  • Old versions of the DB will be retained.

This is the only certain way to guarantee compatibility. Once a scenario is built, IT STAYS BUILT unless or until the author decides that he wants to adapt it to a newer version. This means that the scenario will play EXACTLY as the author intended.

  • Comprehensive descriptions.

Detailed text for subs, ships, aircraft, and weapons.

  • Comprehensive mine model.

Mines can now be swept by minesweepers and helicopters.

Can you explain the approach you took on the satellites, pros and cons of that approach? (shooting them down, sensor horizon, etc.).

Can you explain the approach you took on the satellites, pros and cons of that approach? (shooting them down, sensor horizon, etc.).
You want us to give away the Trade Secrets of the PlayersDB? :clown:

The Satellites in ANW were found to fly at sea-skimming altitude. The first thing Freek did was inform AGSI of this problem on June 5, 2006 (long before the game was ever released). The response from AGSI was, "That problem can fixed with adjustments to the Database."

Of course, the very next question was, "Okay, if satellites can be made to fly properly when given the correct values, What are the Values we need to use?" To this date, no response has been received from AGSI.

So, we went about searching for our own work-around solution and we think that we have found something passable with our new [ANW] satellites. Instead of an elegant, easy-to-use solution, we've had to employ a cumbersome and awkward technique. Players shouldn't notice any difference, but designers have to bend over backwards to make satellite passes happen. :upset:

Tony,

Let me give away the family jewels then:

The problem was I had some satellite containing scens I'm quite attached to, and want(ed) to convert to ANW.
However the Ferry mission behaviour in ANW is different, and puts planes at 2000m decending to vLow about mid-way. This is not nice for the 747s I habitually put in scens, but it is deadly on the sats.

So Herman and I brainstormed ways to 'work around' the behaviour, and try to get the sats at vHigh altitude so they had ample radar coverage (RORSAT).

We decided we'd need to use a 'Support' mission to a refpoint, then kill the launch base of the sats, after which the sat would drop into the sea.
This works; IF you can kill the satbase within the very short window after the sat has taken off and before it reaches the refpoint and IF you tweek the fuel on the sat to just make it to the refpoint and IF there are no other friendly or even neutral bases the sat can divert to.

Being quite incompetent designers, we literally spent months on this.
To illustrate that point, here was the wildest idea, which did work:
- launch the sat from a invisible satellite launch ship to a refpoint on support mission
- immediately trigger a transit mission that moves the sat-base-ship to that refpoint - at 32000 knots!
- result, the sat lands nicely on the ship it launched from - but on the other side of the ocean!

<< this was the one time I've distinctly heard Herman speachless >>

Herman vetoed this idea though because in 3.6 the 'invisible ship' is not invisible and we try to make scens that work in both 3.6 and ANW (Why? Just because its Hard).

Anyway, I have working versions of RORsat and Approach (were it not for some non-sat bugs in ANW....)

Cheers,

Freek

A powerful new feature has been added to the PlayersDB for scenario designers. With a single mouse click, scenario writers are now able to insert an entire pre-configured Installation. This means that instead of laboriously adding 40+ facilities one at a time, a single click can do the trick. Over 112 fully pre-arranged Installations are available for your selection including:

Okinawa
Commodoro Rivadavia
Murmansk
Petropavlovsk
Vladivostok
Port Stanley
Port Stanley - 1982 (Argentina)

The Installations capability is built primarily upon the work first introduced by the Harpoon Users Database II. The editor, Darren Buckley, has graciously allowed the PlayersDB to incorporate it for the enjoyment of the entire Harpoon community-at-large.

Installations, I'm sorry???

As far as I was aware the only working installation file is part of the HUD series databases.

Here's the history:

When Jon Reimer first developed what we now know as the Reimer Editor, hereafter RE there were only 16 dat files processed - NO Installations. Since I was heavily involved in the development of the RE with Jon I had an idea. Installations had been deleted from the ODB between the initial release of Harpoon2 and the updated Harpoon2 Admiral's Edition H2AE. It was my considered opinion that using the flexibility of the RE and Jon's knowledge we could resurrect the "Installations.dat" file from the initial H2 and using the RE convert the file for use with H2AE. Jon approached Jesse Spears and Jesse was kind enough to help Jon include the ability to deal with the Installation.dat file with the RE.

There were issues however and Jon had to "play" with the original file to have it compatible with both the RE and H2AE. As soon as this was done I included it the HUD-II and it was released to the public as part of that database.

I have a couple of questions about this announcement. Where did your installation.dat file come from? I've checked most of the other currently available databases and I don't see too many with them, so I was wondering how you overcame the problems even Jon Reimer needed help from Jesse Spears with? I was just wondering don't mind me...:bite:

Thanks in advance

Darren Buckley

That's exactly what happened. We continued on in the great tradition of the HUD II (which had 90 Installation entries) and added 20 more.

The only issue I was aware of pertaining to the insertion of Installations was the fact that sometimes the scenario editor would "forget" about aircraft inserted to Installations in H3.6.3. This was supposedly rectified if you dismantled the installation and re-grouped it, afterwards. I've been using them and haven't encountered this problem, myself, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. :D

When we re-tested the Installations for ANW, we didn't encounter this problem. We did see another one whereby aircraft destroyed on the ground within an installation wouldn't count towards Victory Conditions, but that's about all we know about at this time. If you are aware of other problems concerning Installations.DAT, that would be great to share them.

Thanks again for allowing us to build upon your earlier works for the enjoyment of all within the Harpoon community.

Am I to suppose that after I release the HUD3 you will continue to "grab" whatever you find useful?

Is there a point at which it stops, or for instance if I decided to continue calling it the HUD-II would that mean you had a free hand to help yourself to whatever you liked as soon as I released a new version?

I am well aware that you decided to include large parts of the HUD-II into the PDB while I was away from the game. I just find it interesting that even when I am so heavily involved in the game's development and am easily found you, yourself have me as an IM contact, yet you didn't see fit to ask if building on a file that is in fact unique to the HUD DB series until now, was fine by me?

I'm assuming you've added the file from the HUD-II to the PDB and then simply completed the required latitude and longitude offsets to make them fully functional as well as adding more. Regardless, I suppose it's bad luck if I'd wanted to use the uniqueness of the HUD3's installation file as a selling point for my database...

thanks again

Darren

I know that we did chat about it on IM and you mentioned no such thing at that time. Of course, if you don't want us to use the work in the same manner or fashion, that's fine. We will remove it upon your request. We've been working on the database in it's entirety and have only now been able to release this handy function after modifying the geographic offsets.
