I've heard of these before but have no idea of how large they are. Any article tends to go for the most dramatic.

Very sad. I too never heard much about this. I know there is an island or small group of islands off the Scottish coast used for testing anthrax left over from WW2 and as a kid when my dad was stationed in Germany there were small areas off limits due to mines and shells but nothing like this.

The island was finally cleaned up ten years ago now. Not that anyone actually lives there but it is now possible to go there.
