My local Sunday paper gets the USA Weekend insert, and it's not a bad read. I noticed a sidebar yesterday with the above headline, and their picks for the best (in no particular order) are:

Paths of Glory (1957)
Patton (1970)
Glory (1989)
Braveheart (1995)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Now I know this topic has been beat to death in the historian's circles, but since this is a new place for us, let's get to know each other a bit better, eh? Your thoughts?

Here's my top 5

1. Saving Private Ryan
2. Full Metal Jacket
3. Braveheart
4. Patton
5. Hamburger Hill

now if you count Band of Brothers as a war movie instead of a miniseries i would place BOB at #2 and FMJ would drop to 3, Braveheart to 4, etc.

Actually the weird thing is I don't consider Saving Private Ryan a war movie. It seems to me to be a weak "love story" set between some GREAT SFX.

I loved Band of Brothers.

My five would be in no particular order:

1. Gettysburg
2. Blackhawk Down
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. Sands of Iwo Jima
5. Pork Chop Hill

If you call Band of Brothers a movie then it would kick Sands of Iwo Jima off the list. Had to give the wife an extra big kiss for giving me the Band of Brothers DVD set for Christmas.

I loved BoB, but I never got to see it all teh way through. I missed one the the shows about half way through, and refused to watch the rest until I could see them all in proper sequence.

Come And See (a Russian movie about Partisan and SS Polizei).
Band of Brothers.
Path of Glory.
Apocalypse Now.
Full Metal Jacket.

And if Master and Commander can be considered as a war movie, it is one of the best in my opinion.

Just got Path of Glory from the library...as I had never heard of it until this thread. Seems to crop up a few times...so it must be worth checking out!

Might try to find Come and See...as I have heard about that elsewhere.

Path of Glory is the translation of the French title of the Kubrik's movie.
And concerning Come and See there were a thread about war movie on WarfareHQ where some people spoke about him, in 2002 or something like that.

IT is the best "Age of Sail" movie I have ever seen. The first 10-15 minutes show me things I never would have considered. :thumb:

It did do one thing I hate though, threw in an entirely seperate story in the middle, what a snooze.

Make the War movie and then make the conservation movie.

Have you read the aubrey/maturin books?

I read the horatio hornblower series over the summer and from that I decided to give the master and commander or aubrey/maturin whichever you want to call them a try.

Very well written but not as action oriented as say the hornblower series. O'brian seems more interested in character development than just action. I got my first book for christmas and bought the second book a few days later. The second book had some 300 pages of just character development before any sea action at all! So, the movie seems to fit in really quite well with their character personalities. In that sense, it was a good adaptation of what I think makes the books quite enjoyable.

Anyways, I agree to a point it was slow, but in a way I enjoyed it as a much as the fighting sequences. It gave a nice perspective to the boredom between engagements.

So if you haven't read either series, I'd honestly give it a try, easily some of the best fiction I've read, even though I've not read much in the way of fiction. ;)

Sorry bud but my reading list is full for the next few years. I just started a trilogy that is very meaty and provocative:

Poverty, disease and ignorance have been virtually eliminated from the Warsaw Pact states. Disobedience to the party has been virtually eliminated. President Superman!

Lex Luthor has been busy assembling a never-ending parade of rogues to battle the Comrade of Steel - all have met with failure. But what of the mysterious Batman from the underbelly of Moscow? Will he be the one to take down Superman once and for all?
