I'm with you all the way. At best they are a distraction, and at worst hurt the movie. I think the one big exception that comes to mind was the romance between Pierre and Natasha in Sergei Bondarchuk's 'War and Peace'. Of course that was Tolstoy and Bondarchuk, not some Hollywood hacks.
