Used and knew about UTM (Universal Transverse Mercatur) system for years in the military but always thought it came from National Geographic Society's mapping of the world based upon Mercatur's system of graphing the world into grid squares predicated on the metric system. I suppose the elevations and more precise data was garnered from the material they gathered. Very interesting story.
