Forget Alexander. Go see TaeGukGi instead. It makes Saving Private Ryan look silly. Like SPR it has a very strong emotional impact. Unlike SPR it has historical context and a good story.

Yes, I saw it last week and will be seeing it again this week. It is excellent. The movie is about two brothers who are drafted (read press ganged) into serving in the South Korean Army. One brother is drafted while his family is leaving Seoul. The other goes to the train to try and retrieve him and is also drafted.

The movie basically follows their experience. The older brother has looked after the family. The younger brother is the hopes of the family and they are all trying to send him to university. It is focused on the older brother striking a deal that if he wins the medal of honor his younger brother will be sent home. There are a few twists and turns that the audience is made aware of but the characters are not. The older brother pretty much becomes a hero, and an animal. The brothers become foils. The movie suggests some moral questions around an examination of how the brothers have changed.

The film is excellent.
