Hi,
I've run the map rendering script on all TacOps maps that I had on my HD. The image quality take a hit when I convert from 24-bit to 8-bit colors as suggested in the manual. On my laptop, the high quality maps run smoothly, but it is a pretty recent machine: let me know if you'd like to try the high quality maps. A strange quirk is that the larger the map, the lower is the sun and longer the shadows...

Both archives (zip, tgz) contain the same files. It is a ~120Mb download that needs to be expanded in the _Battles folder to replace the original folder. The "individual" folders contains ONLY the bmp files, indexed by the map name. I don't mind sending out a burned CD for interested people on dialup.

The plan is to run the software from TacOpsHQ in the near future. It will be possible to manually edit the heightmap and the rough map as well as other parameters from the browser.

Hope that you'll enjoy, let me know if you do.

Here is a preview for Map001c : http://www.opcon.org/~bongo/MapMasker/RP/individual/Map001c.bmp

Map218 is a good example of how roughness and height representation can be standadized:

The maps are in fact beautiful.

Being new to TacOps however, I do have a rather newbie question.... Can I use these maps with the solitaire scenarios included with the game? If so, can some kind soul please provide a brief explaination of how.

Thanks

Look for the bmp file in the map folder that goes with the scenario you want to play. Rename it. Drag the new bmp file into that folder it should be the terrain you see when you start the scenario.

I haven't tried it yet but it should work.

Gary is right. As long as you replace the bmp file in the [...]\Tacops v4/_battles/Maps/MapXXXc, you'll be seeing the new map in-game.

Someone asked me for the high quality maps, I'll post them tomorrow.

Hey Emx77, my server seemed to have shutdown while I was on vacation. I'll get it back up on Tuesday and let you know. The www.opcon.org is now pointing to another website that I maintain, though the correct URL are the following:

http://morticia.cs.dal.ca/TacOpsMaps/RP/Truecolor/
http://morticia.cs.dal.ca/TacOpsMaps/RP/Maps.truecolor.zip

Or you can get instructions on installing here: https://sites.google.com/site/bongotastic/contributions/tacops

I'll ping this thread when it is back online in the next 48hrs.

Bongotastic, thank you very much for RP. Your maps are significant improvement over orginal ones.

You are welcome.
It was great fun to hack the map binary format... but I don't think that I'll ever do something that tedious ever again!

I actually created two tiny tools for map files some years ago.
The first copied terrain info from one file to another, and the second - I can't remember, have to check first.
Anyway, as map size is dramatically limited, I created sveral overlapping maps, and I used the "tools" to copy and paste terrain info.
I anybody is interested, please let me know.
