A stealthy russian squad in a night scenario rolls 6,6 when making the Movement DR so it strays.

The wdr is a 4 and the first hex it enters is a woods hex. Can the straying squad make a choice to use bypass or not. Or must it move "as far as possible", that is using bypass?

I don't see any requirement to nor prohibition from using bypass, and there is no rule saying the unit as to move as far as possible. It looks like the player's choice.

that's not entirely correct........... excerpt from E1.53....the unit continues to move in that direction until it runs out of MF/MP (thus requiring a vehicle to remain in Motion)....

so it appears you can use bp but you must move until out of MF/MP

Sorry. I meant they need not move as far as possible in the sense of maximizing the distance in hexes. That is unlike berserk or recall, where the unit must move in the fastest manner. The unit must exhaust its movement capabilities, but need not do so efficiently.
