World War 3: Europe 1990

Background.

In November 1989 people in East Germany had had enough of the Communists and wanted to be part of the West once more, the Goverment in East Germany issued an order stating that the Gates should be opened on the morning of November 9th. Thousands flocked to the gates in Berlin many hours before hand, trying in vain to be the first across the border. However nobody told East German police units manning the miles of wall and crossing posts.

In front of the world via the T.V camara thousands of East Germans were gunned down, West Germany at once declared its intentions to open the border, by force if needs be. The world watched and waited, NATO called emergency summits, as did the Soviet high command, troops were rushed to the East - West German border in the winter of 89-90.

The Soviet Politburo called upon NATO to hold emergency talks when it learned that the U.S was sending three whole Divisions to the area around Hamburg, the Russians claimed that the U.S were planning to invade East Germany in the new year. The NATO forces were boosted by British, Belgian and Dutch forces too. Whilst the Soviets kept what they had in place, not wanting to aggrevate the situation. However time was critical, the day before talks were planned the Soviets launched their pre-emptive strike on the west, plunging the continent of Europe into a war on a scale last seen during Stalins drive to Berlin in 1945.

February 12th 1990

Assault begins. Operation Black bear is underway with Soviet Airborne and Armoured formations assaulting Denmark and West Germany. The two army groups are split into North and South, with North's objectives being the occupation of Denmark. The 3rd and 1st Danish Divisions (Tank and Infantry respectively) hold a line running from Nykoping to Neastved to Copenhagen, the capital. The Soviets have sent their 97th Airborne to attack the Danish 1st Division around the Neastved to Copenhagen road. Whilst the 3rd Danish Tank Division is holding Nykoping against the 143rd Infantry Divisions amphibious assault, should they lose then southern Denmark could collapse, giving the Soviets another route towards Hamburg.

Army Group South is attacking the West German city of Hamburg along two assault routes one from Lubeck to the north and one from Luneburg to the south. Lubeck is defended by the 28th West German Panzer Army, whilst the 34th West german Panzer Army is holding Luneburg. Soviet 34th Airborne Division has landed near Luneburg and fighting has broken out around there. (34th West german taking on 34th Russian confusing?!?). The Russian 132nd Tank Army is heading towards Lubeck, should any of these roads be opened to the Soviets then Hamburg would no doubt come under serious threat.

February 13th 1990

NATO forces detect movements of Soviet Paratroops in the Luneburg area, Commander of the 34th West German Panzer Division is advancing slowly towards enemy forces, not wanting to take any unneccesary casualties to an ambush from the 34th Russian Airborne Division Commanded by Colonel Rose. The Divisional Commander of the West Germans in the area is Oyvind Reinholdtsen, he has despatched recce troops supported by armoured elements to counter this threat to his area H.Q

The Soviets have dropped in behind the frontline of the NATO - Soviet border, they have also managed to utilise a special glider which has enabled them to 'drop' light vehicles and even light tanks (PT-76 Light Amphibious Tanks).

Further North around Lubeck the Soviet assault started with disaster as the Commander of the 132nd Tank Division was shot by a sniper from the Germany United Front (GUF), the Soviets have retaliated by wiping out the entire village where the killing took place. The 132nd are now under the Command of Dan Hekrna, and are moving rapidly to engage the West German 28th
Panzer Division commanded by Thomas Borling. He has units entrenched on the road from Norderstedt to Lubeck and the Russians must move those units to continue their Advance. Already the Soviets have encountered West German Patton tanks
deployed in woods near the Lubeck Road. Soviet T-72M1's are pressing home the attack, near Luneburg however the fighting is
almost over with the West Germans, mopping up the remains of Russian Airborne units. The Soviets will have to wait until they
reinforced by elements of the 6th Polish Tank Division before pressing home the attack once more in this sector.

Denmark has two of its three main Divisions holding a defensive line, with the 3rd Tank Division commanded by Rick Olszowy taking on the Soviet Amphibious landings of the 145th Infantry Division commanded by Jeffery Lau. The landings are being preceeded with a special forces attack on the vital Headquarters of the Danish southern Army at Nykoping. 1st Division is holding the nearby town of Neastved with Russian Paratroopers dropping all around them, they are also using the special gliders with PT-76's inside. The 1st Division is being commanded by David L Carroll, who is holding out against the attacks by special forces led by Andreas Grotz.

February 14th 1990

The Soviet attack on Neastved met almost no opposition, the Danes withdrew in good order to defend the capital with larger numbers, rather than skitter away their best units in Neastved. Much further south the German 28th Panzer Division is still holding the Lubeck road, they have taken many Light Tank losses (Pattons) but have stopped the Russian 132nd Division in their tracks, however reinforcements are appearing for the Soviets. The East German 9th Panzer Division has moved to support the Russian assault in the north, the Soviet high command believe an assault on Bremen would mean NATO forces would have to support the British holding the city, thus giving the 34th and 132nd Divisions more breathing space to operate. The British 3rd mechanised Divison has two Brigades, the Durham Light Infantry and the Lancashire Fusiliers (Infantry and Tank respectivley).

The East German Panzers have moved out from Dannenburg towards Munster, where waiting for them is elements of the 3rd Mechanised, a large tank battle is in the offering with both sides fielding at least 100 tanks, as well as support troops e.t.c. Should the British lose then the doorway to bremen would be open with rear units having to be called up to reinforce the 3rd Mech, the East Germans would then almost be closing a ring around Hamburg, which is still under assault from 2 Russian Divisions!

Cuban and Soviet officials talk in Havana, the Soviets tell the Cubans the will give them vast amounts of new up to date weaponry, including the new T-80 MBT's, in return for siting Intercontinantal Ballistic Missiles on their island, an American spy gets a detailed account of the meeting. American president George Bush is furious and orders an American blockade of all of Cuba's ports.

Update

February 15th 1990

American military officials meet with top senators to ask for a military strike against Cuba, the senate decides to talk about it with other NATO officials, the military becomes impatient. Cuban gunboats and an American Destroyer engage each other off Guantanamo, the Cubans are driven off with no loss to the Americans. An aging old Cuban Cruiser slips out of the American 'net' and moves around the South American coast towards Brazilian waters. The Captain radio's a distress signal early in the morning of the 16th, sayign he is out of control and requires help.

More fighting going on in Europe, the 3rd Danish Tank Army takes few prisoners in its battle with the Russians. In the Caribbean the Cuban Cruiser is being tracked by two American Destroyers and a Brazilian Cruiser. The Cubans wait until the Brazilian ship is across its bows, the Cuban captian believes it is an American vessel and releases a brace of torpedo's, the Brazilan cannot believe what he is seeing, two hits, two plumes of water rise into the air, cheers of joy rise form the Cuban vessel, the two American Destroyers close in and see the stricken Brazilian ship, the Americans fire on the Cuban vessel, starting fires all across its hull, the Cubans quickly jump ship and swim towards the American vessels, the American commander of one of the Destroyers orders his men to open fire on the men in the water, machine Guns are set up on the deck, 30. calibre rounds rip through the water, turning the water red with Cuban blood. Many Brazilians are also killed by the Americans in their bloodlust frenzy, three Cubans survive and are picked up by a Columbian vessel which also heared their distress signal. The Brazilians order a full investigation into the affair, American reporters claim that the Cubans lured the Brazilians into a trap and sank the Brazilian Cruiser, before gunning down the Brazilian crews in the water, the Americans then moved closer ot pick up survivors, but came under attack themselves from teh Cubans, they then returned fire and engaged and sunk a single Cuban Cruiser, with no survivors. The Cubans tell a different story, they claim their Cruiser was out of control adn set upon by the other three vessels, they sunk a Briazilian warship but in turn were sunk by the Americans.

February 16th 1990

Cuban officials hear the story from the Cuban sailors who survived the attack, they tell the Russian officials to get the missiles here as fast as they can! The senate also hears about this from the same source, and tells their Generals they have their war in the Carribean. They order three Divisions to Florida to prepare the attack. They also ask the Brazilian government for help with transport, who comlpy with their wishes.

Denmarks last stand

February 18th 1990.

Danish 1st Division makes its last stand on the outskirts of Kobenháven, the Russian 97th Airborne are reinforced with tanks from the Polish 6th Guards Tank Division attack along a front of just eight miles. Forward Battalions of Infantry are dropped off in trucks (captured and commandered when Neastved's HQ and Barracks were taken) and the Soviet Airborne march into battle, many men fall as Danish units in fixed positions sell their lives dearly to defend their capital.

Danish 3rd Division is still locked with the Russian Infantry on the coast, Soviet airstrikes and naval bombardments of reinforcing areas have taken its toll and the Danes are beginning to fall back.

West German Panzer Divisions have held well and are enjoying knocking out Soviet armour by the hundreds. However Hamburg is in danger of falling, Bremen, to the south, has been taken by the East German 9th Panzer Division, they pushed aside the British 3rd Mechanised Divisions two main Brigades, the Lancashire Fusiliers (Armoured) fought a frontline holding action and were almost wiped out by Mi-24 Hind D's, however American Apaches were called in and their were intense Helo Dogfights in the area, the British knocked out as many tanks as they lost, but their Infantry support was inside Bremen, whilst the tank battles raged at Munster.

February 21st 1990.

Cuban and American aircraft clash in a one sided battle over the Caribbean, the Cuban pilots lost thier lives to give thier Army a chance in the upcoming invasion, as they were shot down they managed to recive three transports full of new T-80 MBT's to supplement a new Armoured Division in Cuba. Named the Castro Division it is being held in Havana, where the Cubans believe the attacks will centre upon them.
