I hope so. The book was an incredible read, considering it was supposed to be a childrens book.
Tolkein was a near genius when it comes to writing.

His writing was only part of his genius.

To me the greatest thing he did was to create such a complex history of the world he created without having any conflicts in its historical timeline. Literally down to the phases of the moon on any given day.

This doesn't even begin to speak of the languages he created to fill the various cultures with speech.

If you've ever read the "Sillmarillion" that contains the back history of LOTR this is very apparent. Its basically the "Bible" that contains the history of Middle Earth.

Absolutely true. The world seems to have been complete in his head before he started writing.

But I found too hard to get through and never enjoyed it. I find The Hobbit and LOTR to be his great works.

I look forward to seeing a good Hobbit movie, too.

Star wars for me but limited to episode 4, 5 and 6.

Babylon 5, season 3 and the hot season 4. Season 5 I haven't seen it yet but have the DVD set on pre-order.

Well, if you're ever in the UK and don't mind being escorted blindfold to my Secret Headquarters by a couple of burly henchmen with machine guns, I can show you every episode that still exists - I've got them all.

So, that's sorted then, I look forward to hearing from you! :thumb:

Sorry I'm late responding, that would be Doctor Number 5, Peter Davison (famous for previously playing a Vet' - and I don't mean Veteran).

The girl you are referring to could either be Nyssa played by Sarah Sutton (yum, yum) or Tegan the mouthy Australian played by Janet Fielding (yum yum at the time, but gone off her now).

OR, you might be thinking about Peri, played by Nicola Bryant (MEGA-YUM-YUM).

i remember watching the 5th doctor on "All Creatures Great and Small". It would have been a far better show if now and again some Daleks would have ridden through chanting "Exterminate! EXTERMINATE!!" and the Peter Davison character chased them off pelting them with Jelly Babies.

Yeah, can you imagine him getting a telephone call at the surgery from someone who needs help because their herd of Sheep has just been converted into Cybermen/Cybersheep?

Don't feel bad even the heartiest Tolkien fan has to consider "The Silmarillion" more of a reference book than an easy read.

B5 has been the best all around show, for both writing and plot.

Star Trek has been irretrievably Hollywoodified and has lost it's soul.

Star Wars has been terminally dumbed down for the kiddies.

Dr. Who had great writing but shoestring visuals.

SG-1 has great writing but is too predictable.

My first exposure to sci-fi was Trek, I loved classic Trek and TNG, DS9 was ok, VOY sucked as does Enterprise....sorry to be so blunt. Star Wars is ok, but that new stuff has got to go. I love SG-1, which is why I voted for it. What I've seen of the Doctor was very cool, but PBS here in St.L stinks to no end (too much membership drives, i.e. one every other week, and that's too much for any PBS stations) so I haven't been able to get a full opinion. As for B5, I like it too, but as with the Doctor, I've only seen Season 1, and I need Mr. Franklin and Mr. Grant to help me get the rest.

I saw a documentary on Tolkein and they said that he took a lot of the descriptions from his town when he was growing up. And he also took some experiences from his time in the service during WWI.

Yes, you are quite right, except this one was an especially vocal example of the species, so I thought it merited the inclusion of both words.
