I think it'd be cool if an SSR would modify B27.54 so that the side setting up the Trenches could determine which ones connect to each other via which hexsides (or even don't connect connect at all). Seemingly realistic, would give the Trench owner an extra bit of scheming to do, and would provide an extra bit of surprise for the non-owner.

In fact, the next tournament I run, I'm going to require everybody to play this way, just because I like to be king.

Seriously. This seems like it's right up @wrongway149's alley - take a standard rule and tweak it in a subtle way that has an interesting effect on game play.

To make things easier, why not create overlays, where you see the connections?
Now, why would you not want each Trench to connect with all adjacent ones (as it is the case after the RAW)?

I can see as the Defender wanting to have only some trenches do things like connect to RB cellars, lower levels, even go under Walls and Hedges. If the Attacker doesn't know which Trenches do those things, they'd have to adjust on the fly. Like in real life.

You'd need new Trench counters with connections along certain combinations of hexsides. Or special "Trench Connection" counters.

Back In The Day, some might have seen that as <get this> : "Too Many Counters"! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Ahh, those idiots. Had no idea what their audience wanted. Needed. LIVED FOR.
We don't want to actually play the game, we just want to sort the counters. Put them in the right places and walk away knowing that's where they are, that's where they go, and that's where they'll stay.

In this crazy mixed-up world of ours, that's all we really want.

That, and to make tank noises.

Next time I have scenario that could implement it -- we'll give it a shot!

We could use crest counters to indicate which hexsides ae connected. After all, there are plenty of them and they hardly ever get used for their intended purpose.

Or even foot bridge counters.
