Can Spraying Fire (Squad or MG) be used to place residual FP in both hexes even if only one of these hexes is occupied by enemy units?

If yes, can this done at a range other than vs adjacent targets?

A9.52 leads me to believe it can only be done vs adjacent targets.

"Spraying Fire can be used vs an empty target hex (halved again for Area Fire) and an adjacent occupied hex to place Residual FP in both of those hexes."

A7.34 states squad spraying fire is identical to A9.5 (MG Spraying Fire)

Thanks

Spraying fire can be used against two hexes that are adjacent to each other, even if one happens to be empty at the time. It is a good way to place residual.

Yes; however, squad spraying fire is only available up to three hex range, A7.34 while MG spraying fire is only limited by its maximum (long) range.

Mak and Brian has probably correctly convinced you that you can use Sparying Fire on two hexes that are not adjacent to the firer. The actual text is a bit less clear than desired, so I just wanted to comment it:

A9.52 says "Spraying Fire can be used vs an empty target hex (halved again for Area Fire) and an adjacent occupied hex to place Residual FP in both of those hexes.".

Here, "adjacent" means "adjacent to the empty hex", not "adjacent to the firer", and "empty target hex" should be taken with a grain of salt. During the enemy MPh, as long as one hex contains a moving enemy unit, it's of course legal to use Spraying fire vs any hex adjacent to the target hex, regardless of whether this other hex is empty, contains non-moving units or contains moving units (HW, PM etc.) as well. The result is that only moving units will be affected (and that RFP is placed) though.
