Is there a way within VASL (or maybe this is a VASSAL question) to give people "read-but-not-write" privileges in your room? That would let people look in on your game, but prevent vandalism (or accidental mis-clicks by the peanut gallery).

From what I understand, other VASSAL Modules have an "Observer" status for folks that are....observing...and are not granted access to manipulating counters?

VASL does not seem to have this option?

You are correct others do have an Observer option.. However they do not prevent movement of counters. I use that mode when playing another game solitaire.

I would just lock the room and people who want to watch can ask to join. I like to watch the games so just ask out of politeness.

The Pest was back today..approx 8am monday morning 30th July (Aus East standard time). We were able to save our game just in time ...as he managed to delete many of the on-board counters..

I was reluctant about locking our room, however it seems that now that is the new normal..a pity! Quite enjoyed saying hi to the friends drop in and vice versa.

Oh well!!

I still keep my room unlocked. I guess we can always back the game to pre-wrecked status? Happy to have dropped into your game with Pete last week.

Having locked the room, the room owner (whoever locked it) can evict others that are not wanted.

That’s a bugger. Games at night should be pretty safe for au Timezone though. He’d have to be pretty dedicated to be up that early in Chicago.

Charming guy. He must lead a popular and uplifting life.

Mental exercise :
  1. I created a VASL room and I locked it
  2. A chap (with a name that is NOT "SpoogBob") PM'd and politely asked to watch the game
  3. 10 out of 10 times I'd invite him in.
  4. Turn out that's "SpoogBob" with a another user name ..Yes I can kick him out, but what's done is done.

Locking VASL room is still no defense unless we are determined not to have anybody joining in the fun. Not a world I wanna see though.

I think saving the game after each turn is a good idea. Helps with AARs as well. Nice to have a record and the files aren’t big.

Grrr - I usually do not mind allowing someone who asks to come in - it is a help to the newer players.

I guess that means before allowing the polite requester to enter that you should save the game - either way make sure the other player is in agreement before allowing them in.

A function allowing someone to join a room as an observer, with no possibility to move counters or interfere otherwise, could be useful...
I am not specialised in java programming, so I have no idea about the possibility of implementing such a feature.

As others have noted, what a downer this is. I have always enjoyed popping in to watch a game or say hi to ASL friends.

Intentional senseless and repeated ill will like this will often come back around to deliver payback at some point in a person's life.

Sadly the twit will now change his user ID...

Ironically, I was once roundly ridiculed on the forum for always locking my room in VASL. At that time I started doing it because dropped connections seemed more common the more people one had in the room...it also seemed to create a lag-time as more people joined.

John.
Not only that. The owner of a locked room can also 'invite' anyone else to join in (see menu). So if someone who wants to join a locked room sends a PM kindly asking for admittance, I am convinced that by far the most of the players will let him join.

At least this is my personal experience.

Spoogebob was on again tonight, about 9pm EST. About half the rooms were locked, but ours wasn't. We haven't been VASLing enough lately to have gotten the word. Lost a few counters deleted and moved around. Easily fixed but annoying.

Spoogebob was back tonight... The way he targets VASL I'm thinking he's got to be a disgruntled ASL player or something.
