By chance I have stumbled on an extremely detailed and very interesting report on the situation mirrored in the scenario SP43 Deadeye Smoyer:
It happened in the vincinity of the Cologne cathedral on 6. March 1945 describing the duel between a German Panther which had first taken out a US Sherman and then been engaged and destroyed by a US M26 Sherman.
There is an explanation presented why the Panther did not fire first although it had its gun facing towards the right direction when the Pershing entered its view: The daughter of the deceased German tank commander related that her father had told her after the war that he believed seeing a German tank at first and thus did not give the order to fire. The M26 was at the time a rare beast and the German commander apparently expected a Sherman such as the one he had just destoryed minutes before.
