Scott Boras is out of his mind. No matter how loved and respected Jason Varitek is, $52m for another four years is completely insane. If the Sox offered him one year at $5m and the team's option for another, Tek would be just as crazy not to take it and be thankful. There's no way Theo Epstein gets played by that bottom-feeder.

Like 37 year old .220 hitting catchers, who have no power & a giant fork sticking out of their backs grow on trees! Come on, the fork alone's gotta' be worth $10M per in a "freak show" kinda' way! :devious:

The Red Sox would likely be wise to just move on. 37 year old catchers that have demonstably lost their skills typically don't suddenly bounce back to respectability & the Sox would be nuts to give him a multi-year deal, much less one with 4 years, unless 3 of them pay him as a bench coach...

The Dodgers offer of "...either two years at $50 million or three years for $75 million." is a pretty smart deal. Huge $, but not huge risk if Manny implodes as he's not a long-term albatross.

Being a Dodger-Hater I was hoping they were going to lock him up long-term at huge bank like Boras wants. Manny is a HOF talent at least so he'll age better than most - i.e. I'd rather sign him to a 6 year deal than 'Tek to a 5 at the same age, but signing neither long-term is the correct play...

Veritek has lost it. He can't turn on the fastball any longer. Boston might sign him to a lowball contract to keep him around for another year, because he means a lot in the clubhouse and to the pitching staff, but no way Epstein is going to give him a lot of money or years.

The Dodgers are smart to only offer a two or three year deal. They already were bitten by Andrew Jones and Brad Penny, so they will be a little more cautious.

He's awesome as a catcher but how much does his lack of offense weigh in the decision? He's absolutely dreadful as a hitter.

But those guys were young compared to Ramirez. I thought Andruw was horrible at the plate for a couple years before joining the Dodgers.

Andruw had one bad year prior to going to LA and imploding. And even in his down year he hit for enough power that the Dodger paid him like it didn't happen. D'oh! 'Course he's one that's been playing "old" for a while - he's a very old 31...
