It is not military movies.

And these movies were made in Stalin's time.

And I wonder for you, Westerners.

I gave you links on BEST Soviet military movies about WWII. (Amvas confirmed it).

Price of most of them is 10-30$. Most part of these movies are translated in English. You can pay this money and will get this movie after 24 Hours.

I do not believe that their ptrice is too high for you. I am Russian, I got 200$ per month and I can to buy movie for 10$ if I very want to see it.

I do not know but I suppose that price of ticket in US cinema is not too less.

It is so easy - pay some money and look BEST Soviet military movies!!!

Do it and discuss what you saw!!!

Hogdriver, you try to know Russians and YOU DIDN'T SEE ANY RUSSIAN MOVIE!!!

Those two movies which you mentioned are VERY old. It looks like all my expression about ALL US movies will be based only on one movie of Charlie Chaplin and one "Gone by the Wind".

You were important person in US Air Forces during Cold War so I do not believe that you have no money.

Buy Russian movies and see it, it is so easy!!!

I guarantee for you that Russian military movies not worse than Western military movies, I saw and Soviet, and US movies.

Read this (attention - it is in Russian):

http://historiae.fastbb.ru/re.pl?2-00000066-001-0-0-0-0-0

Very funny, I like it.

It is about two first parts of "Shtrafbat" and about "Diversant".
And what is so good about this review exactly? Yes “shtrafabat” has hardly anything to do with reality but his (the author of the review) problem is not so much with factual errors as with that some “proavoslavni” is shown as a traitor – it did not even occur to me that his beliefs are an issue here, and with last names of the film producer – the guy is a judofob - frankly this is getting very tiresome.

P.S here is good link for actual shtrafbat: http://www.rkka.ru/memory/pylcyn/main.htm

Well, some of these films would be useful for some university Russian language vidoetechs I suppose. I shall look into ordering some for my university. Are there now or were there any Soviet TV series on the lines of "Band of Brothers?"
Yes, I recalled.

There is such movie.

It is not Soviet, it is Polish mini TV-series which was VERY popular in USSR. Practically every man who was Soviet boy in 70th-80th remember it, it was favourite movie of all Soviet boys of that time.

Name of this movie was "Chetyre tankista i sobaka" ("Four tankmen and dog").

This movie (app. 25 parts) was about Polish T-34 crew in Polish troops which fought against Germans together with Red Army.

Give some credit to western public will you. It is not that easily scared. Even more so people who watch foreign movies are well aware of the problem and there are some purists who even prefer to be this way. Das Boot for instance was selling in two versions – German with subtitles and English-dubbed. German version as far as I recall was selling better, and considerably so. I believe it was the same story with “No man’s land”. As for me I has not left Russia and have no plans to do so. My job requires me to stay abroad –often for several months at the time. Nothing is wrong with that. I saw “Night watch” - the book is better or and btw it is “Lord of the rings”. I am sure that many people like it, but still I would be hesitant to speak on behalf of 180 million people.
I quite agree that original language with foreign subtitles is better. I saw "Das Boot" in both versions, and the English-dubbed version was pathetic. I want to see movies, both entertainment and documentary, that are made in Russia. I have been studying Russia and USSR since the age of 8, and try to be as current as I am able regarding what is happening. I have a pen-pal in Russia, we write and e-mail each other regularly.

Simply being made in Stalin's time does not automatically make them bad. True, Ivan the Terrible was a propaganda film for Stalin, but Potemkin was made in the 1920s, before Stalin came to power. Also, Eisenstein was given considerable latitude even while making "Ivan", although Stalin did keep the final authority. If one were to condemn everything that came out of the Soviet period, or only out of the Stalinist period, many products of worth would be discarded.

Until quite recently, how available were Russian movies, books, etc. to Westerners.

It seems to me that you feel that my views are invalid until I see what YOU want ME to see. Rather a narrow view on your part.

Your views are invalid because you don't know Soviet movies about WWII.

You do not believe me but Amvas said that movies which I read are "gold fund of Soviet/Russian cinema making".

If you are so hardly believing person you can send my list to your friends in Russia who are "good guys".

I remember seeing a Russian movie in colour on ARTE about a boy somewhere in Western Russia which village was burnt down and its people burnt alive in the churche by Sondertruppen. I guess that would be the nr. 7 'Idi i Smotri'. Very cruel indeed; something you'll never forget.

ps: about the movie 'No mans land'; it may not be russian and may not tell about WW2 (its about the absurdness of the war in former Yugoslavia) but its definitely one of the best anti-war movies of last years. Go and rent! ;)

Hello.

I corrected my list and added some more links to it.

And do not think that the movies in the bottom of my list are not so good!!!! It is only the list, ALL the movies are excellent

Top 10 movies:

1.
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0073488/
http://www.russianbeat.com/v_tree.cfm?TYPE=%C2%EE%E5%ED%ED%FB%E5&TITLEIDCLICKED=1413
Они сражались за Родину (Oni srazhalis’ za rodinu) (1975)
("They fought for the Motherland") – It is one of the best Soviet military movies, a lot of the most famous Soviet actors played in the movie.
It is the summer of 1942... The remainders of a broken regiment are retreating in the region of the Don. The Germans are going to Stalingrad. The regiment lost the most part of its men, these guys fought and retreat for a very long time but they do not run, they retreat in an order and continue to fight when the command orders to defend the positions. I suppose that it is the best of the best.

2.

("Alive and dead") - It is one of the best military movies. It is about the events of 1941, it is based on famous novel of Konstantin Simonov.

Горячий снег (Goryachij sneg) (1972)
("Hot snow") - It is one of the best military movies. It is December of 1942. The tanks of German General Got are trying to breakthrough to Stalingrad where the Paulus’s German troops are encircled. It is a story about the feat of the soldiers of the Soviet 2nd Guard Army, who stopped the troops of Got and provided the success in Stalingrad.
The main heroes of the movie are the soldiers of an anti-tank battery and the Soviet general, who has to see how his infantry is dying in the combat against the German panzers but he is waiting a good moment for sending his last reserves, a tank unit, in a counterattack.

4.

(there is an English version!)
Иди и смотри (Idi i smotri) (1985)
("Come and see") - It is one of best movies about the partisans, it is a very brutal movie. Its start is quite but in the end a spectator will be shocked. It is so a cruel movie as this movie was even forbidden in Eastern Germany in the time of the existence of USSR, in spite of the fact that Eastern Germany was considered a puppet of USSR in all questions.
If you want to know what the Russians think about SS (and why do they think so) look this movie…

А зори здесь тихие (A zori zdes’ tikhie) (1972)
("Lovages are quite here") - This movie almost got "Oscar" –
A flak battery, equipped by girls-soldiers and a man-commander, is in a small village in the bank of a small lake in the Soviet rears in Karelia.
Suddenly a woman from the battery saw a pair of German paratroopers in a forest. There is an important military object not far from that place so the battery commander sent a messenger to his command and decided to intercept “a pair of the Germans” himself together with five his subordinates-girls. He didn’t know that the amount of the German paratroopers was much and much more than “a pair of the Germans”…

Other good movies:

Семнадцать мгновений весны (Semnadtsat’ mgnovenii vesny) (1973) (mini)
("17 moments of spring") – It is one of the best Soviet movies. The names of the movie heroes became very famous. I read that there were no crimes when the movie was shown by the Soviet TV, all the population of USSR was nearly their TV sets at that time. Later this movie was used in the spy schools of KGB as a training material.
It is the spring of 1945. Soviet spy Isaev (he is known as Shtandartenfuhrer SS Shtirlitz, a large scale member of SS security service in Berlin) got the order to know about the possible separate negotiations between an unknown German leader and a few representatives of the US intelligence...

Звезда (Zvezda) (2002)
("Star") - It is a very sad story about the group of the soviet army scouts in the rear of German troops.
It is 1944. The local Soviet Command supposes that the Germans are preparing a counterblow but has no reliable recon info. Two groups of army scouts have crossed the frontline and disappeared without a trace. The third last group of scouts (their radio nickname is “Star”) crossed a frontline and began to gather recon data in the German rears. And a young girl-radio operator (she loves lieutenant Travkin, the commander of the scout group “Star”) in a Soviet headquarters repeats again and again every day: “I am “Land”, I am “Land”. “Land” is calling up “Star”. “Star”, answer to “Land”…
This movie is made in the best traditions of the Soviet cinema.
And take care, there is other movie “Star” about the same events, it is the movie of 40th years of XX Century!

Yes, it was a good movie about the soldiers of a penalty battalion. But I didn't find the link on this movie...

- Afganskiy izlom
Yes, it was a good movie. But I do not remember its details...

- Chistilische (about Chechen war. 1995)
I didn't like it. It is too biased and non-realistic movie. Its director, Alexander Nevzorov, is a too odious person.
