Sniper Distance/Direction DR leads off board

During a single-board scenario, a sniper's distance & direction DR leads to an off-board location. I just re-rolled until it gave me a hex that was on the board. I didn't use the off-board SR approach because I'm playing on an enhanced VASL setup, and adding a board would mess everything up, but what is the correct approach?

You would butt up a proxy board where your sniper drifted off from, and then count the off board hexes back onto the main board and then figure out the nearest eligible target. You do not need to use a proxy board if you can figure out how many 'theoretical' hexes the sniper is located off board in order to backtrack onto the main board..

You a supposed to let the sniper move offboard (as per C1.321) and then reposition above the closest enemy unit which is actually onboard (as per A14.2)
