Routing as Stack Required?

Hi All,

Let's say I have 2 broken units in a building under DM. Must they rout together, or may they individually take different rout paths to different legal target locations? May one unit stay in place if not otherwise forced to rout, while they 2nd unit routs? Thanks -- could not find a specific rule reference.

The fact that they must rout one at a time makes a big difference when invoking no quarter. If more than one unit must surrender, the routing player can try to surrender the least valuable (to him) unit. The other player has to choose between taking the prisoner (which presumably he does not want to do) or potentially allowing the other units to rout away after he invokes no quarter.

A20.21 says : "A stack of broken units in a Location surrenders simultaneously and must be accepted or rejected (20.3) as a stack."

Routing one at a time means you get to see whether something happens with the first unit in a stack before committing the rest, but yes, when stacked units are bound to surrender, they have to do it together.

A20.21 says : "A stack of broken units in a Location surrenders simultaneously and must be accepted or rejected (20.3) as a stack."
Routing and surrendering are not the same thing though. If a unit must surrender it is usually because it cannot Rout free of Interdiction, gets Mopped Up, is Disrupted, etc, in which case the "surrender by stack" method comes into play. Where a unit can Rout at some point before its inevitable surrender, it still has to be done individually.

It is also possible that, in a stack, the first unit routing will end up revealing enemies and the rest will end up surrendering.
To avoid that situation - e.g. kill the stack by invoking NQ - the hidden unit can reveal itself before.
