Residual and Spraying Fire

Hello Foruminites,
Wanted to make sure I played this situation correctly...

1) Japanese HS moves adjacent to Guamanian 447/MMG in Light Jungle hex.
2) MMG announces First Fire using Spraying Fire in HS's hex and another adjacent hex. Guamanian 447 squad does not add inherent FP.
3) MMG rolls 1,4 which normally maintains Rate of Fire.
4) Guamanian announces no Residual will be placed in order to conserve MMG's Rate of Fire.
5) Covered Arc counter placed on MMG, but no First Fire counter.

Was I right that placing residual from a MG can be declined to save ROF even if Spraying Fire was used? Checked rules and couldn't find anything contrary.
Was MMG marked correctly? No First Fire marker and CA on hexside?

Thanks,
Randy

Thanks for the reply...after re-reading my original post, I slapped myself and realized that I could have simply asked:

Does use of Spraying Fire necessarily mean loss of Rate for Fire for a MG?

I'll learn how to write a good question someday....

Agree with ABills:

Looked thru me eASLRBv2 and it looks like the answer is: "No".

Could be wrong(unlike others here) but see no rule in contrevention.

But I have to ask....

If your didn't want to leave residual, why did you use spraying fire???

I guess it could be used to leave residual in the event that you did not retain ROF.

Looks like another trick to put in my bag.
