I love the freedoms we got in this country, I appreciate your freedom to burn your flag if you want to, but I really appreciate my right to bear arms so I can shoot you if you try to burn mine.

I'd rather get blown up than eaten up.

A sailor from Neptune's Inferno. I'll give the correct attribution when the book arrives. Expect more quotes from that most excellent book.

In the first six to twelve months of a war with the United States and Great Britain I will run wild and win victory upon victory. But then, if the war continues after that, I have no expectation of success.

I used to live in a room full of mirrors; all I could see was me. I take my spirit and I crash my mirrors, now the whole world is here for me to see.

My first wife said, 'It's either that guitar or me,' you know -- and I give you three guesses which one went.

I'm no coward. I just don't know what to do.
Sailor aboard the cruiser San Francisco which was taking heavy fire from the IJN to wounded Marine gunner Clifford Spencer. Spencer had been wounded multiple times. He had the young sailor dress his wounds and help him to the aid station on the mess deck.

The reader will probably detect that I have a love of the sea and some readers may find my personification of ships somewhat overdone. But those are the readers who have not served in ships, who have not experienced firsthand how a vessel takes on the collective personality of the men who crew her.

Thomas J. Cutler The Battle of Leyte Gulf

While I pretty much agree with this I wonder how much the personality of the ship affects the personality of the crew. There was a sense of being elite on the sub. Not so much on the destroyer. We had no depth charges or torpedoes. The only way we could hurt a sub was if it surfaced and let us take potshots at it. Even then we probably couldn't hit it. In the shipyard they removed our AA guns. Needless to say there was not much of a feeling of being an elite, or even potent, fighting unit.

Admiral Earnest J. King's daughter described him as " the most even tempered man in the Navy. He is always in a rage."

Lmao that's one way to look at it.🤣
