A MTR fires on a hex containing 3 enemy units. It obtains a CH by rolling a '2' on the DR.

The 3 enemy units take RS die rolls to determine which unit is affected. They all tie and all are affected.

The subsequent DR on the IFT is a 1KIA.

  1. Do the units each take a 1KIA individually (and thus all die).
  2. Do the 3 units undergo a second RS set of dr to determine who takes the 1KIA and any others break.
A.9 RANDOM SELECTION: Whenever an event occurs calling for the Random Selection of one or more units in a hex, a dr is made for each such unit therein. The unit with the highest dr is the one affected by that event. If there is a tie for the highest dr, all of the applicable units which rolled that number are affected equally. The process can be speeded up by the application of assorted "House Rules" of the player's choice. We recommend using four dice of different hues to resolve Random Selection with a single DR. The lightest colored dr applies to the top applicable unit in any stack, the next darkest to the next applicable unit in the stack, etc.

C3.74 RESOLUTION vs MULTIPLE TARGETS: Regardless of the number of targets in a Location struck by a CH, the special provisions of a CH apply only to the target(s) determined by Random Selection. Attacks on other units hit in that Location are resolved as if struck by a normal hit [EXC: If a CH is obtained vs a vehicle, the vehicle always receives the CH and any other units affected Collaterally are attacked normally; D.8]. If using the Area Target Type or OBA, and more than one occupied Location is hit, use Random Selection to determine the occupied Location in which the CH occurs.

They all are hit by the CH one KIA, use random selection just as if they were all hit by a 1 KIA non-CH.

All units that get the same nominal result share that result, even if they arrived at that result through different paths. For instance if one unit was concealed and one not so that the attack was on different columns, but (perhaps due to different DRM) they both got a 1KIA on their respective columns, the result is shared between the two as a single 1KIA and not treated as two separate 1KIA results.

In this situation .. since all 3 units rolled the same in random selection .. we are going end up with 1KIA still (via another random selection) or 3 x 1KIA (all dead)?

Or perhaps the sequence of events should be ..

  1. CH hits a 3 unit stack.
  2. Random Selection says all 3 gets CH'd
  3. The 3 CH'd unit gets 3 DR to resolve their individual CH's
Correct?

If they participated in the same random selection for the 1KIA (not the CH) and tied, they're all dead.

No. There is only one effects DR, even if not all three were affected by the Critical Hit, even if different units are affected on different columns, and even if different units have different DRM. One effects DR rules them all.

Whoa, a rules question came down on my side? Case of beer for JR (for being a great guy) and a case of Scotch to him as well for the 'appropriate' ruling!

Me, not being such a great guy, will let Jackson buy the booze! :)
