Since no one's any idea of what would have happened, we've made the Western Allied Theatre option to declare war on Germany variable:

25% chance 25 turns after the German DoW on the USSR
50% chance 35...
75% chance 45...
100% certainty 55...

(with a turn or two variable either side so that the German player isn't certain on turn 35 that he's definitely 'safe' for another full ten turns)

If it's any consolation, the TOAW engine tends to trigger variable events at the earlier end of these percentage chances, but you could conceivably end up defending the USSR for just over a year before the French and British get off of their backsides.

The loss of Moscow may (50%) cause the US to enter, which automatically allows Britain and France to do the same: 100% if the USSR surrenders, but by then you're knee deep in the sticky stuff.

turning to be the best game of EA ive played so far
the enemy is at the gates though there is a titantic battle brewing in the south. in the north his right flank has pushed away from moscow and in trying to unhinge it before he can push up to murmansk or archangelsk. liberation of leneingrad is long term objective. having played allies for the firat time at this stage of the game its astonishing the number of reserves the soviets get

As it's an EC game, which is only possible if the French extend the Maginot Line in the 1930s, I'm assuming that Stalin, fearing the worst, would have built up the Red Army earlier than he did historically. So the Russians do get several more (strong) units than in a conventional game but facing the Germans, Finns, Poles, Rumanians, Hungarians, Bulgarians and assorted Slovaks and Ukrainian guerillas, they probably need them.

It does produce a desperate struggle in the East. In my game against Pelle the Axis took both Leningrad and Stalingrad but I just couldn't get to Moscow and now (March 1942) the tide has turned horribly, with the Red Army 'liberating' Rumania and the French in Milan. Just got to hold out for another three years...
