Q22 Exploiting the Gap playtest v. Ernie Cameron; a Personal Morale Check (PMC) past resulted in a nailbiter that came down to the last German MPh.

The vaunted German SS supported by a pair of Wehrmacht Pz IIIL(Fl) Flammenpanzers must exit 13 VP off the east edge with British Seaforth Highlanders trying to stop them.

The first two turn the Germans tentatively moved forward, trying to locate the British 6-pdr A-T Gun. The Pz IIIL(Fl) lurking just a bound behind ready exploit any situation when it presented itself. The British skulked about trying to keep their concealment, waiting for a juice target with a -2 DRM.

The British had set up a knot, centered on the stone building in the middle of board. This strongpoint last for a couple of turns before it was burnt out by the Flammenpanzers; a 30FP straight garnered a K/4 on the 4-5-7 in the stone building, resulting in the HS, ELRing and breaking. The Germans quickly stormed the buildings and lumberyard.

The British soon after abandoned the centre strongpoint, save for a 4-5-7 toting a PIAT in the building in M8. The 4-5-7 squad quickly became the rearguard and when the Flammenpanzer with a Malf MA rolled up and started firing its MGs, the 4-5-7 had enough and plopped a PIAT bomb out the window, scoring a CH! (TK15x2 = 30 - 8 APV = 22TK) with the result a burning wreck. Just before that the other Flammenpanzer snaked forward between the lumberyards and the building, but the HIP 6-pdr let loose from the orchard across the road and also scored a hit with the same result a burning wreck.

At this point in the game (End of Turn 3 MPh of 5.5) the German who started with 33 VP, had just lost 13, leaving 20 VP left to try and get off the map; however, the quick loss of both Flammenpanzers (12 VP) required Ernie to make a PMC. After a brief moment to "Suck it up!", Ernie declared "Let's finish the game!" - well done Ernie!

The British 6-pdr turned its fire on to the German infantry and the first shot Malf'd the gun (the next turn eliminated), the 4-5-7 toting the PIAT unable to withdraw, continued to hold out as the Germans had cut off his retreat. Meanwhile British units on the west flank attempt to move up to the hedge and interdict the open area in the centre between the hedge.

Turns 4-5 the German pressed forward, breaking the British in front of them and forcing to retreat. As the Germans continue to exploit gap between the hedges, the British attempt to rally and move forces to stop them. The 4-5-7 toting the PIAT rearguard was finally broken and forced to surrender but the Germans SS would have nothing of that, invoking "No Quarter".

Turn 6, the German last MPh. The Germans had 20 VP within a movement of exiting the east edge. The British were unable to prevent the Germans from exiting, having been broken the previous MPh trying to move into position to interdict the Germans exiting of the I1 road. Meanwhile on the right side, the British managed to rally a Broken and DM 4-5-7 who with the 9-1 SMC could cover the right side.

The Germans partially succeeded on the right, losing a HS to the 9-2 & 4-5-7, but got a HS into position to Advance off the map in Q1. In the centre, the German exited a squad, 3x HS, a 9-1, and a 8-0 off I1 for a total of 11 VP. However the need 8-1 and 6-5-8 (4 VP) moved into the (I3) wood and fired upon by the 4-5-7 in G5 resulting in a 1MC. The Leader Pinned and the squad broke dashing any hopes of victory.

A close match that came down to the last MPh, as a result of a passed PMC. Well done Ernie.
