I have been a fan of the Starter Kit system since it came out in the oughts. There are differences, but both SK and full ASL provide good gaming experiences. One thing I have found though is when it comes to the Pacific Theatre of Operations the SK way is not the way to go.
A friend and I started VASLing the SK PTO scenarios and after a while we switched to all the rules ASL. Why? Well, at the beginning since neither of us were PTO experts we were consulting the rule book a lot and the SK#4 rules were not adequate. Time and again we would not find what we needed and have to go to Chapter G for the answer. Simply put, PTO is more complicated and that requires more rules.

Prior to moving onto full ASL, I played through all the SK PTO scenarios. Like any other new rule section, it took a little detective work to sort through the new stuff. But I don't recall us ever running into a situation for which the RAW didn't have an answer. I'd also be curious to know where you felt the SKRB let you down.

Can't remember specific rules queries, but I think we were checking and rechecking rules concerning the Japanese units and unit capabilities and PTO terrain. I mean, the rules are the same, and SK#4 does have well-written examples, but Chapter G has more detail. We played through the Starter Kit scenarios and then the St. Louis ASL Club PTO scenario pack.

The way ?ment plays in SK isn't quite the same.
