Hi guys,

I'm a total newbie with VASL (only played one game solo to try and get the interface about right), but I'd like to try my hand at preparing some "scenario setup files", if that is at all possible - basically, files with the board already setup, with the right counters prepared offboard, things like that. Both as a way to teach myself the software's interface and feel, and to make it easier to start games when I decide to go for "real" games.

What's the "right" way to do this? create a new game, set up the boards, blindly place counters and just save, or is there a smarter way?

That is the correct way to do this, IMO.

I would take a smaller scenario, set it up on VASL and then play it solo.

That will get you familiar with the VASL interface for eventual online VASL play.

Hi Philippe,

Personally, I enjoy creating an aesthetically pleasing and somewhat organized game environment. It's one of the joys of VASL that doesn't necessarily translate to a game on a tabletop. So when I know I'm going to play a particular scenario, I'll set the whole thing up before hand. Takes me about an hour, give or take, depending on the size of a scenario. First I set up the boards, and any overlays that might be necessary, then I'll go through the scenario card and add the important info to the info page and the scenario notes page. Next, I set up both OB's in the Tray. Once the necessities are taken care of, I also create some custom play aids from the VASL labels that are specific to the game. Here's what it all looks like when I'm done. This is a setup for ASL 19, Backs to the Sea.

Here's the setup file for you to play around with:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/sc81r1050cxzy19/ASL%2019%20setup%20example.vsav?dl=0

Once loaded, just click on the Info page and you'll see where everything is.
Hope that helps you a little

Best Regards,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Looking at your screen shots, I would be interested in your setup file as well.

Ken
Thanks, Ken
Just download the VSAV file from the dropbox link above and you'll have it. All the custom play aids that you see are created by writing HTML code to line two of the user labels, found in the draggable overlay tab in VASL. Once you create them though, you can save the HTML code in a wordpad file and use it to create labels for other games in just a few minutes; just copy and paste. You can learn more about creating custom VASL play aids in this thread here:
http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?117049-Custom-VASL-Play-Aids

This is one of the first ones I did for a SASL game.

I'm working on something different now for a future game with a friend. It'll be a while before we're ready to play it, but I use it for incentive to get there, lol.

As you can see, once you learn the techniques, which isn't hard, you can create pretty much anything you want. And it's fun, too. It's almost a hobby within the hobby.
Hope you found this helpful. :D

Best Regards,
Jeff
