What is your preferred screen resolution? I still operate at 800x600, but I understand higher resoultions are becoming more popular.

800x600?!?!?! what the heck are you running? if you're playing games, you need to run at least 1024x768, come on!!!! just kidding.

i personally run 1280x1024@75hz.

Do you have an old video card or a small monitor? Or do you just prefer having everyting "big" on the screen?

800x600 is Windows safe mode.

Actually, my preferred resolution is "clear".

Oh wait, I'm just recalling my other second monitor hehe, something is not quite right with the thing. It's slightly off and slightly blurry. You don't notice it after a couple of minutes in front of it, then you see my primary monitor, and you wonder how you can even use the other one hehe.

I don't mind using a higher size rating when it allows more image to be displayed, but for some games, closer image is better than more of the image .

I like everything big. I do a lot of writing and I find a higher resolution adds to my eyestrain. When it comes to gaming, most games automatically switch to a higher res by default, so 800x600 isn't really much of a problem.

Size of the monitor is an important factor in finding what is a comfortable resolution to use. A 17" monitor at anything greater than 1280x1024 can get too small to work with. Reticles the size of pushpins. Readouts that you have to lean in to see. I have found that at 17", 1024 x 768 is a comfortable gaming level.

Aries, a couple of things to check for. On the blurry, if it's hard on the eyes because of flicker, you want to go into your video preferences and bump up the refresh rate. You should have it set to at least 72Hz, but higher is better. Windows has a tendency to default to 60Hz, which is bothersome to many people. You might also need to adjust your monitor's convergence settings, so that Red, Green, and Blue dots all line up with each other.

If you experience problems like a color dropping out, where things look a little too blue or the like, you should check your monitor's VGA cable connector. See if any of the pins are bent inward. If the pins are not all going into your vid card, you can experience artifacts due to lost signal.

I keep my desktop at a constant 1024x768, 16-bit at 85hz. My monitor is supposedly optimized for this resolution & I find that my games run best at this setting. I have trouble seeing printing at higher modes.

16bit color? i've always ran things in 32bit, but honestly couldnt tell you how it affects games.

after running 75hz refresh rate, my eyes tend to freak out when i load up a game that runs at a default of 60hz.

15". It is the same monitor that came with my ol' Cybermax PC. Someday I have to upgrade to one of those neat LCD monitors.

I use 1024*768 with 32bit at 80hz. Goes really smooth on the eyes and is enough for a 17" monitor...

I always went with a low resolution with my old 17 in monitor. But I recently got a 19 in flat LCD one and I use the highest it can do and it is nice.

1024 by 768. Although to be honest I didn't really prefer it but had to use it at somepoint.

Sorta annoyed by the fact that not all apps are the same although probably more pressing concerns in life.:D

I can't really see using 800x600 unless you absolutely have no choice. Some computer games will no longer run in resolution that low, and most web developers abandoned 800x600 a long time ago. It's simply too restrictive and nearly impossible to create nice websites that will scale down to that size. Once considered a "good" resolution, 1024x768 is seeing a lot less use than it once did.

I run 1600 x 1200 32bit 75hz refresh on my 19 inch CRT.

I have to admit, I'm a little surprised by the results of this poll so far. Granted, not very many people have responded so I can't say how representative the results are of the forum as a whole, nevertheless, the results are interesting.

I'm surprised that so many people are using high resolutions these days. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great! As a web designer I hate having to design around visitors using 800x600, which should be called "stone age mode."
