Hi,

I am having troble finding the VASL.exe file as printed in the readme file for VASL 4.

" First, you should have downloaded and installed the VASSAL engine.
For Windows systems:Right-click on the VASSAL executable and create a shortcut to it. Right-click on the shortcut and edit its properties."

If someone can explain this to me that would be excellent.

Thanks

What part of this confuses you?

You need to download the file. Since the install program is an executable file you just double click on it after its downloaded to install.

Make sure you also download and install the Jave Run Time Engine (JRE). And make sure you use Java 1.3.XXXX not 1.4....

answer 1

I guess the part where it says it is an .exe file.

I have downloaded it again ( admitedly on a Korean computer) and it is a ZIP file.

When it extracts it is ( primarily)a .mod file. There IS NO .exe file at any time.

That is the problem.

Thanks

Ahh!
OK, you start by hitting the "VASSAL.EXE", then "Play Module", then select the VASL.mod
That should do it.
Ciao

Where is vassal.exe

I know how to download files after 10 years on the net.

What I don't know is where a .exe file EXISTS in the VASL download .

The Java is an .exe the VASL is a .zip. Its that simple.....

Extracting the zip ( of VASL) does NOT on this computer create a .exe anywhere.

Thanks

as I explained

OK..........

At www.vasl.org there are 2 files to download. The Java which is the GAME ENGINE an the VASL which is of course the counters etc etc.

One is an .exe one is a zip.

The Java goes into its Java home, the VASL zip gets extracted.

AT THIS POINT where is there an .exe file on VASL4 ???

What I am worried about is that you are able to see something I can't.

Bye[/code]

This is one way of starting up VASL 4. It's the indirect way, but it works for me...

For VASL 4 you will need:
the VASL module (from vasl.org)
the VASSAL executable (from vasl.org)
JAVA 1.3.1 (from the Sun website - link on vasl.org IIRC)

To run VASL 4 you need to run VASSAL first. Double-click on vassal.exe; this will begin the VASSAL Module Editor. Click the button entitled 'Play Module' and navigate to wherever you have extracted the VASL module. Select vasl.mod, and Bob's your uncle.

Hope that helps clarify things...

still not quite there

Hi,

Thanks for the vasl.mod info above. I am SO CLOSE to getting this to work its past frustrating..... !!!

The problem is now that I can't get a board to load. I have the RB board in two locations : program files/vassal and program files/vassal/ boards.

SURELY one of these must be correct - even as a defualt !! Still no luck.

Any ideas welcome .

:)

Not sure where the default directory is (I changed mine), but I'm willing to guess that it's ../vassal/vasl/boards

If not, then you can go to preferences and change it to wherever you like. Your overlays should however be in ../boards/overlays

Bear in mind that the RB map is (I think) the biggest brute of them all, so it may take some time to load up.
