Or does anyone have strong objectives about such a game being published?
I have very strong feelings - in favor of having the games published.
One of the critical shortcomings of FPS's re WWII is the inability to take the opposing side. I'm am no advocate of playing Joachim Peiper at Malmedy, but playing as a German FSJ would be great, as would the afore-mentioned WaffenSS. The only games I can recall immediately that allowed you to play as WWII Germans in FPS have been
Panzer Elite,
Aces of the Deep and
Aces Over Europe.
The difference in play would most obviously be the need to go defensive after the turning point of the war, which was well modelled in Aces Over Europe, where missions became progressively oriented towards bomber interception as the game wore on, and your replacement ratio of new pilots climbed through the roof. By the end of this game, I was going through new wingmen at the rate of one per mission, and scramble missions caused by Allies attacking my airfield were common. Both AoD and PE, of course, played primarily as the German side, although PE allowed play as American or British armor as well.
PC is all well and good, but this is about historical conflict.
