Check this out - I found these little packs in a bookshop today - they are pretty neat. Pirateship1982 ought to love these...

There appear to be two different games/packs - Pirates of the Crimson Coast and Pirates of the Spanish Main. Picture 1 shows both packs. Each one cost me about £2.50.

I opened up the first pack - picture 2 is the rear of the pack. Each pack is literally playing card size - they are sort of packaged like Collectible Card Games.

Piccy 3 is the content of the pack. There are two ruels leaflets, and a whole load of plasticized cards with punch-out sections to make your ships. There's also an island which doubles as the Sargasso Sea on the reverse, and some gold coins for your treasure...

Piccy 4 shows part of the rules leaflet - with the parts provided you can build six different types of ship (only 2 at once though).

Picture 5 - here are my two ships! Careful when assembling though - those masts are REALLY fragile. Now to work out how to play...

Looks like you can write to info@wkgames.co.uk for, erm, info', or visit www.wizkidsgames.com if you are outside the UK or Europe.

D'oh! Maybe I should look in the section before resurrecting a thread. Sorry.

I play the MechWarrior game from WizKids, and that kind of got me into Pirates. Crimson Coast in the first expansion to Spanish Main, and introduces some new game concepts (such as the French). I will (hopefully) play in my first Pirates game Saturday when I attend the Pirates of the Crimson Coast Marquee Event. Currently I have one Spanish Main pack and one Crimson Coast pack (and I got the only American ship in the game so far, the Roanoke, in the Crimson Coast pack). Are you planning to play competitively, Doc?

Never noticed we already had a thread on this - maybe I ought to combine them.

Unfortunately I have no-one I can play with, but having opened the other pack and found a big map inside, it does look nice.

I had made the other thread June/July of last year, back when PotSM first came out, then while I was looking for my rant thread, found it again and resurrected it. If you want to combine them, that's fine.

You can go on the WizKids website and register as a player, and search for venues in your area that host games.

As for the map, can you post a picture of it?

Here's the map and the reverse side.

I might go and grab some more of these, they are dead cheap and I can build a fleet!

Dr. S.

That's odd, I didn't get one of those maps. I also don't recall them being mentioned. If you get more packs, can you tell me if they have maps in them too?

They're about $3.99 over here, which is a lot better than a $9.99 MechWarrior booster (though I still love MW; Pirates is just cheaper to get started). And it looks like I won't be participating in the Marquee Saturday, my family and I are going out for my and my sister's birthdays. Oh, well.

And when putting in the masts, hold them by the base, there's less chance of them snapping.

I'll grab a couple of those packs when I'm next in town and let you know if they have similar or identical maps inside. If so - you want me to send you one?

Great collection there, Doc!

The forts are in the Crimson Coast release. The British one is Fort Brampton, I think. It's special ability is when a friendly ship is docked at the island this fort is on, it gets a +1 to the cannon rolls. I think it was explained that the fort was chronically short on gun crews due to all the combat it faces.

You can also check on Ebay, too. I've got a few pieces coming, including the American Captain card for the Roanoke.

So you have eight packs, but 16 die and only four islands? That's odd. There should be only one die in each pack; each Spanish Main pack should have an island card; and each Crimson Coast pack should have and island/terrain card (the terrain, Fog Bank, Sargasso Sea, and Reef, are printed on the back). Hmmm... maybe it has something to do with the maps; you get either a map or an island with the English release. I'll email WizKids or something.

Well, this is what's confusing me. OK, in each SM pack I'm getting a full-sized map, three dice (one red, one black, one white) plus ships and other bits.

In each CC pack I get an island/terrain card, one die, two instruction leaflets.

It's like the SM packs are starter sets, and the CC packs are add-ons.

Let me know what Wizkids say Mr Bariman.

I was introduced to this little gem at Origins last year, and I received a few free packs. Interesting concept, as the cards you punch-out the pieces from are reusable to hold the pieces after your done playing!

I just don't have the time for even more games! :(

Looks like we are a common people separated not only by a common language, but by a common game as well. Here in the states we get one tiny black die in each pack and there are no maps. In the spanish main pack we receive ships and islands with gold and crews. In the crimson coast pack, we receive ships (maybe a fort), islands (with new terrain/effects on the back), gold and crews. No starters-no boosters.

I sure would like to get maps though...

I emailed WizKids earlier, and they sent a reply. Here is what they said:

"We actually made different versions for the two countries. Neither game style is better – the English one is only set up to have two players, but because it’s on a map, they have limited space and are basically forced into fighting each other more. The game is slightly more complicated because of the increased number of dice. The American version is great because you can have tons of players, it’s not as complicated, and the game can be played for a long length of time because the space is not limited.

That should explain it.

I see! Well, yes, that does explain it. Seems to boil down to "complex but short" vs. "simple but long". BUT it doesn't explain why they spelt "colour" as the US "color" on a map that supposedly only comes out in the UK (!!).

Anyway, Mr Bariman, I haven't had a chance to post you your map yet, but I will do so soon.

I guess thay want their English customers to be reminded of England's naval history, or something. :D

You might want to look out for English Captain Percival Blake. He costs 7 points, but gives you the Captain ability (move and shoot) and gives the ship he's on the Broadside Attack ability. I would definitely use him, but I don't have any English ships. At least, until my Ebay order gets here. Then, BOOM!
