P3- Cota’s Last Stand playtest v. Ernie Cameron; Jerries slows Yanks’ advance.
Turn 1 – The few German units on map have set up back from the road; leading the Americans to believe that the woods on the other side are wrapped in wire, laced with mines, and covered by fire from hidden machineguns and mortars set up further back. From their FUP (Forming Up Point) around the (17W3) building, the Americans push through the woods, across the road (trying to avoid the path 55Z9), and crossing the bocage lined fields north of the sunken road. Keeping out of LOS of any known German units while keeping spread out to avoid getting caught bunched up by an MG or mortar.
Turn 2 – The American advance continues centred on the wood with the path running through (yes stumbled into minefield 55Z9 and then the HS was subsequently eliminated by an HMG from pillbox in 54B3). However, the American advance continued to press forward, pushing out of the woods to where the two boards butt up with each other. Here the Germans decide to put up a fight. A German 4-3-6 squad moved up to the (55FF4) woods, covering the road, while an 8-0, 4-3-6, with LMG moves into the 84FF3 orchard to cover the woods and road. A few ineffective shots are traded back and forth, save for a (4+1) shot that manages to break the 4-3-6 covering the road.
Turn 3 – The Americans, using fire and movement, continue to move up the road. The American 10-2 Leader (a.k.a. BGen Norman “Dutch” Cota) has finally caught up with the leading units. The Germans looked to make a stand with the broken DM’d 4-3-6 squad in (55GG5) woods making a DR 2 on a 1MC, in the ensuing HoB DR, rolls a 12 and Disrupts – D’Oh! The sound of jackboots running forward along the bocage can be heard as the two platoons (9-1, 7-0, 6x 4-4-7, 2x LMG) of German reinforcements arrive, taking up position around the (84DD6-DD10) woodline. Part of a German platoon (7-0 & 2x 4-4-7) moved forward into the (55GG4-FF1) woods to set up and help rally the Disrupted squad. In the following Turn 5 PFPh, an American 60mm mortar behind the (55EE7) bocage laid some fire on the 7-0, 4-4-7, and broken 4-3-6 in the (55GG4) woods. The fire was very accurate, 6 hits including 2x CH. The result was the leader wounding, the 4-4-7 CRing and the 4-3-6 being eliminated.
Turn 4 – The Americans press the attack with Lt. Shea (9-1) & a HS advancing up the road to the (84CC5) open ground hoping to cut off the German 8-0, 4-3-6, & LMG in the (84FF3) orchard from withdrawing back behind the bocage to the (84BB1-BB4) woods. Lt. Shea was surprised by rifle fire from a German mortar crew in the (84BB6) woods; the German crew (4+0) shot rolled Snake-Eyes Cowering resulting the (2+0) getting a K/1. Random selection resulted in Lt. Shea being wounded and the HS CR. Meanwhile Dutch pressed forward looking to help rally a broken HS in the (84EE6) road and was nearly caught off-guard by a German 4-4-7 squad moving into the (84DD6) woods; had it not being for an alert 6-6-6 packing an MMG in the (84GG5) road who laid down fire (10+1) and managed to break the German squad, saving Dutch’s butt. Through out the previous turns, the Germans redeployed his units from the north to the south behind the lines.
The first two turns there was little firing happening, but turns 3 & 4, firing has increased; once again, the American firepower is devastating.
With 4 movement phases remaining and 16 hexes to cross, the Americans have both the ability and the numbers to get of the map, but it will be tight.
