It all depends on how you are learning ASL. If you are trying to learn infantry only at first, then just look for scenarios that do not involve guns, 1/2" mortars, bazookas/panzerschrecks, and vehicles.

If you are learning the infantry and vehicle rules at the same time (this is what I did), then you only need worry about avoiding special rules like bad weather, night, desert, pto, etc.

Whatever scenario you pick, I'd check with ROAR just to make sure it is not a dog and to minimize the chances you might have an unpleasant playing experience, but beyond that, I'd just say go for it.

Gavin Take is a very good Infantry only scenerio and can be downloaded from MMP's website. Tactiques 2 "Between the Hammer and the Anvil" is another good infantry only without the worry of multiple levels for buildings. You can download a copy on www.socalasl.com under "Scenerios" then "Tactiques."

Infantry-only suggestions:

Gavin Take (T1)
A Meeting Of Patrols (A29)
Defiance On Hill 30 (ASL 11; adds 2 Light Mortars)

Vehicles:

Shklov's Labors Lost (T4; mostly infantry, but the Germans get one Stug)
The Puma Prowls (T2) (has only vehicles)

T1 - Gavin Take is easy infantry only
T2 - Puma Prowls is easy vehicles only
ASL1 - Guards Counterattack is ok, and infantry only.

The cool thing about Guards and Puma is that Tom Repetti has some nice walkthrus for these at:

http://www.mindspring.com/~tqr/

Of course, these scenarios are available at:

http://www.multimanpublishing.com/downloads.php

EDIT: The groggies may be sick of these, but the scenarios are freely downloadable, and there's published walkthrus.

Not a scenario, but a walkthrough on the maps with Chapter K is always helpful.

I found the attempts at humour in Chapter K too much to bear. I guess your mileage may vary.

Did I say anything about the humor? The question was about learning ASL. There are very good examples of play in it.

Two beginner's scenarios

I totally recommend the two NEW scenarios on the MMP website:

Traverse Right.... Fire Light tanks fighting A/C's

and

The Front in Flames .... Infantry against Infantry in the city

Now taht's free info

Observation and Question about Front in Flames

I agree that Front in Flames is a good introductory scenario.

However, I have a question about it.
When I played this, my opponent and I questioned what happened when
the a unit first gains LOS.

We assumed that all units entered concealed. What happens to the
concealment of the units that first see each other? We decided that
the pre-game movement was Assault Movement, so if a unit in a building
or concealment terrain sees a unit in Open Ground then the latter would lose
concealment, the former would retain it.

If one assumes that it's non-Assault Movement then concealment would
be lost no matter the terrain the unit occupies while gaining LOS.

Any comments?

There was a "Perry Sez" Q&A response on the other thread about this issue:

Just a question about W2 The Front in Flames scenario.
SSR 7 seems to imply that only units begining in Melee lose concealement thus other units, even in LOS and Open Ground of enemies, begin Turn 1 concealed.

Correct.

Just a plea for newbies to try anything other than Gavin Take or Puma Prowls, particularly on VASL. Personally I won't bother with either scenario ever again, even as a teaching tool as they are just too well-worn for me to countenance playing again. If it's not enjoyable for either of the players it's not worth playing.

Another suggestion for infantry only teaching scenario which I use in preference is the very first Deluxe ASL scenario from Streets of Fire: Guryev's HQ. There are some core defensive and offensive techniques that can be taught very easily in the scenario: "Skulking" and Op Fire as well as smoke grenade usage.

Newbies should note that the previous post is also the reason that most "old" players don't want to play "Guard's Counterattack". Too many replays. :)

I found this old archived email post I sent to the ASLML in 2002...the link still works.

A few years ago, Alain Borel translated a series of articles from
the french gaming magazine "Vae victus" and put them up on
his website.

The beauty of these articles is that they are designed to introduce
newcomers to ASL. Each article comes with a scenario that is used
to illustrate the concepts outlined in each article. Furthermore, the
scenarios are designed to cater for different levels of familiarity with
the system, so even we jaded veterans looking for a quick, fun scenario
that caters for our knowledge can find something to work with.

This series of articles are pretty well unknown to the greater ASL
populace which is a shame as there is much to be gained from
downloading them and utilising them.

The URL is: http://icmbpc029.epfl.ch/~aborel/ASL/

So if you're looking to help a newbie learn the game, and looking for
something else than tired old re-runs of Gavin Take, Totsugeki
or Puma Prowls, try out "Mala Zemlya", "No Step Back", "Storm
Over Mariupol" or "Surgis l'Enfer" instead.

I don't think even the most jaded veteran could help but try them out
with his new opponent. And you can even up the degree of complexity
to suit the experienced players.
