Only seeing the map when trying to spectate a game

Recently when I've tried to spectate an online game on VASL, I can only see the map. No units or anything else. I can see chat text and dice rolls, but on the actual game area only the map. Have tried to click on the button that shows different state of the map (with and without units etc) to no effect.

Luckily I can play normally so this only happens when I try to spectate a game.

Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this?

Probably, you do not have installed the current version of VASL v6.5.

Most counters have an additional feature supporting the 'Casualty Bin', which did not yet exist in VASL versions previous to v6.5. For that reason, an older version is necessarily unable to display the 'new' counters.

My advice is to update to v6.5 and then see if the problem persists. My guess is, you will then be fine.
