Rumour has it that there might be a small number of ASLers meeting in Ohio in October.
As luck would have it, I will be there around that time (1-12).

Can anyone recommend something for me to do with my time?

Actually more importantly, should we just stay on in the ASLOK hotel or do folk know where and what we should do with the four days that fall outwith ASLOK?
We will have a car and are not too worried about traveling but prefer to do European distances (100-150 miles) as trips rather than US ones!
My wife will be with me so anything suitable for her to do would be great.

Thinking about this, maybe I should have put it in Chit chat...Feel free to exile me there.

Cleveland actually has some nice parks. One just off of nearby Lorraine Rd is very nice. It is just northwest of the ASLOK hotel and would be a pleasant walk around/picnic weather permitting. It is a gorge with a stream/small river running through it. A very pleasant surprise for me.
Then, if you are fans of Amusement parks, nearby Sandusky has one of the largest in the USA.
Go a bit East and drive around the Allegheny river in western Pennsylvania. Many winding roads with mountains, the Allegheny river and many, many trees.
ASLOK always falls (no pun intended) around peak foliage season. If you and the wife are fans of "leaf peeping" then you have many options.
My non gaming suggestions.

Drive to Holmes County and visit Amish country. Ohio has the largest Amish population in the U.S. It's a treat.

Sounds good. How far is that and did we arrange accommodation near there or just stay in the hotel?

There's a large mall in Strongville, I-71 South
There's a casino in downtown Cleveland

It's not without risk to your wallet though

For the rest you may want to send a MP to Davegin, who has local knowledge

You could drive 117mi to Toledo and see where I grew up. Take in a Mud Hens game. Go get yourself a hot dog at Tony Packo's. Marvel at the sheer and utter flatness of it all. Yearn to leave. Go to Idaho. Yearn to come back.

You might consider visiting the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, OH. It's about 210 miles from Cleveland, so it's not a trivial trip (say 3 1/4 hours driving), but it is pretty impressive if you are interested in warplanes. On one of my extended trips out west I went there for a day before getting to Cleveland.

Vinnie,

If you are interested in seeing an American football game, the Cleveland Browns are hosting the New York Jets on Sunday, October 8. The Browns pretty much suck, but the game should be fun.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is in downtown Cleveland and is worth a visit.

The Chagrin River Valley area is always nice to visit. It isn't that far east of downtown Cleveland. Chagrin Falls for lunch and an ice cream cone is always fun, plus you can go apple picking in that area. There are also some very nice parks for hiking in that area.

Cleveland also has a world class orchestra, I'm just not sure if they are playing the 8-12th.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Cleveland Play House is between shows that week.

There is a WWII submarine in downtown near the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

(oops...looks like it closes September 30)

If you are interested in automobile history, the Crawford Auto Museum is pretty nice and if you are in that area, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History is a nice place to visit.

Strangely, the sheer flatness is an attraction.

Sitting beside a jets fan just now. He went to NY last year and they were playing away but weekends. Might just try that.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Will we get a review of your trip like your daughter has reviewed ASL products in the past...this seems a must? Even if she does not make the trip, you can provide her with video and snaps shots and your own first hand accounts of that place called Ohio, I sure she can do a review. Also your younger daughter, the rules guru, could gives us a synopsis of how US driving laws on your journey vs. UK driving laws... Not quite as good as her knowledge on IF options and the like, but still maybe something to appeal to her. Perhaps traffic signs might be of interest...The Amish Horse and buggy sign for instance...or the requirement that their buggies have the "less than 15 mph" red triangle on them? Can they be pulled over for speeding?

Not that I have a trip to Cleveland in my future, Although when I do, I will certainly keep your suggestions in mind. Especially the Rock and Roll HOF.
Thanks!

It's probably not something that's a "together" activity. You didn't say whether you were looking for only things that were joint activities. For a person such as yourself interested in WWII I can recommend it as one of the better historical museums in the US.

I have also been to the Cleveland Museum of Art in one of my extended visits. It's not a world-class art museum, but it isn't a bad regional museum.

My wife and I spent three days touring Cleveland before the last ASLOK. We enjoyed the Cleveland Zoo, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Science Centre and the R'n R HoF and Museum. The Science Centre is mostly child oriented, but they have have an interesting, good quality section dedicated to John Glen. We intend to see the Natural History Museum in a future visit.

Downtown Cleveland has some top restaurants for foodies.

If planning to visit the Cleveland Zoo, probably best to see it before ASLOk. Doing it the other way around isn't nearly as interesting (for reasons that will become apparent as ASLOk reaches its peak late in the week). Either way, it's only a short drive from the ASLOk hotel.
