1.06 Patch from Norm

Edit: I have merged both threads relating to the new patches. There might be some confusion so I included the starting topic of both threads in this first posting

Well here it is. Norm wants us all to test out this patch and make sure there are no problems with it before he continues his research on future patches. He sends this warning;

Just make folks aware that these are not officially supported by Take-2, that I don't really make any claims that they have been tested, and that since the code was left in a "partly tinkered with" state I'm not absolutely certain that there aren't partly implemented things I didn't locate when I reviewed it last week.

When I unzipped it I renamed both my opart exe's in case this new one gave me problems. Thus far it has not...even with a few PBEM games going on with 1.04 users. I suggest you play it safe and back up your files anyway as a precaution. Several of us have tested it, but there is no way to guarantee it will work for you too. If you have any problems or questions about this, use this thread to ask questions before you install the patch. Also use this thread for comments about the patch and its gameplay.

Norm has stated this patch really only has a few tweaks to improve play on XP, since he is running XP at home. Most users therefore will probably not notice anything new at all when running this patch. If you don't want to be part of this test and its potential for problems, please don't install this patch.

That being said, Norm is very excited to get this patch into as many hands as possible so we can bang on the code and make sure it is stable before he updates it even further. Good things are coming! Thanks everyone for your patience.

1.06 Patch for ACOW

Edit: Additional information from topic 2

For an ongoing list of proposed enhancements/wish list go to this page ... Wishlist/Enchancement list

***

Norm is definitely hard at work to crank out some product! He has updated the 1.04 patch so it is now unwrapped to avoid the copy protection issues. However, he has also released a full version of the 1.06 patch which will update directly from 1.00 so you no longer need to grab 1.04. It comes with all the scenarios that were in 1.04.

The only folks who need this download are those with version 1.00 (ie, just bought the game, are reinstalling it, etc.).

So the two files are:

1.04 unwrapped patch (you won't need this if you grab the 1.06 patch instead) 7mb

1.06 Full Patch --> updates ACOW version 1.00 to 1.06 (with scenarios) 7mb

If you already have 1.04 installed, you should still use the smaller 1.06 update here

As usual, use at your own risk and post any problems here.

And for those who missed it in the other thread...here is some important info from Norm; :D

"I will check the forum to see if there is anything that needs fixing in 1.06 now that it's been out there for a while. Then I plan to tackle the first significant unofficial update - support for hex edge rivers, more events, and improved movement path calculations."

Clarifications:

You can install 1.06 and still PBEM against someone with 1.04. I have had no problems doing this so far.

Some folks are running both versions on the same PC, although I don't have a procedure for doing that. If anyone is interested in running both, post below and I will try to get that info for you.

heh, I was just looking at Tannenburg, and the battles before it, ie Battle of Liege, Belgium 5th-16th August 1914.

Always nice to meet someone who lives somewhere where I'm studying :D

Some of the original scenario does not work (Southfront 42, and there was an another) with this patch (before loading it writes this scenario does not work with this version).

I was able to open and run South Front 42 with Opart and Opart 300 with no problems using 1.06.

What OS are you using? Just so we have a basis for comparison for Norm.

I have tried the new patch on PBM games. I'm running it on WINXP. Tody I had a sort of glitch when I opened up the PBM file. The page after you have watch the replay frooze adn the time symbol was showing and computer was working.. The program didint show the progrees of supply and so on. When the main screen showed I couldnt move anything, couldnt move the main scren any direction. I tried to close the program and I was put back to the main screen and could play my turn...Strange..I will report if I encounter this again...

I think I have seen something similar to this even with 1.04. When supply is done checking it is like the news reader comes on but it is invisible over the map. You have to move your mouse around and try to find the continue button (even though you can't see it) and once you click that it continues the game as normal.

I think the enter key will do the same thing as clicking the button. Much easier.

I think I read somewhere on this board that running in Windows 2000 compatibility mode works better than XP. Any truth to that?

When I downloaded 1.06 I thought it would include hexside rivers, or at least permit me to drawa new map with hexside rivers. Was I wrong in thinking that? If I'm not wrong, how do I get the hexside rivers to appear?

1.06 working very nicely so far

I've been putting the 1.06 patch through its paces for a few days. Everything seems to be exactly as reported: the patch makes winXP work much more smoothly. It used to take quite awhile for the game to load. Now it loads promptly and seems very stable. Occasional but annoying graphic anomalies in the editor seem to be gone.

Congratulations to the folks who have stayed in touch with Norm and encouraged him to release this patch!
