Nor'easter XXV goes virtual! March 18th-21st 2021

15709

Announcement:
The Yankee ASL group (https://www.yankeegamers.org/) announces the virtual Nor’easter XXV tournament! Due to the continuing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic the 25th version of our Nor’easter ASL tournament will be held virtually via VASL. This will be a “live” event on the same weekend as already planned for Nor’easter XXV: March 18th-21st 2021. Full details and descriptions are below.

Description:
The YASL Nor'easter is New England's regional ASL championships. It is normally held annually near Boston, MA. In 2021 it will be held virtually via VASL. It is a yearly get-together of people in the New England area, and now worldwide, that play Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) and Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit (SK). The Nor'easter is hosted and directed by the boys from The Bunker and the Yankee ASL Group.

Since we are virtual this year there are some changes from the usual setup. First, the tournament is 100% free! No hotel means no registration fee! But there will still be prizes for the top 3 finishers in the Main Tournament. As of this writing, we do not have any mini tournaments planned but if that changes we will post an update.

For up to date announcements and friendly banter we recommend you join our mailing list on groups.io either from our main website at https://www.yankeegamers.org/ or at https://groups.io/g/yasl.

The sign up page and information is always available at https://www.yankeegamers.org/noreaster/noreaster2021.php

Schedule and Tournament:
Currently we only have the Main Tournament scheduled with Carl Nogueira as the Tournament Director. Being a virtual tournament we expect players from many time zones so our usual round times have changed.

Thursday March 18th is reserved for open gaming. We have a list of recommended Thursday scenarios available for download at https://www.yankeegamers.org/noreaster/noreaster2021.php. If you are interested in Thursday play, we recommend you join our mailing list (as described above) and request a matchup.

The Main Tournament will be held as follows:

Round 1 Friday March 19 11AM EST-4PM EST

Round 2 Friday March 19 5PM EST-until you finish

Round 3 Saturday March 20 11AM EST-4PM EST

Round 4 Saturday March 20 5PM-until you finish

Round 5 Sunday March 21 11AM EST- until you finish

Full Main Tournament rules are available at https://www.yankeegamers.org/noreaster/noreasterRules.php. Please note we will post updates on how the rules function in a virtual environment.

As of this writing, we will require players to use VASSAL 3.2.17 running VASL 6.5.1 as that appears to be the most stable version for the most players (http://vasl.info/). This too may be subject to change as we draw closer to the start date.

The full scenario list has already been published at https://www.yankeegamers.org/noreaster/noreaster2021.php with scenario downloads. You will see some new YASL scenarios that have not been published yet. Around the same time as Nor’easter XXV we will be releasing the YASL pack 2 with more great scenarios and 3 new boards. Thank your LFT for helping us with this production!

Please head on over and sign up. Check here, on our website or mailing list for more information and updates.

Thank you,
Yankee ASL and the Bunker Crew

Thank
Upon downloading and unzipping the boards, you may see them come out with .dat extensions. Remove those (including the period) and put them in your VASL boards folder, and they'll work fine.
Thank you Tom.

Clarification on Matchups:
Should you decide to register for the tourney, please contact me at chnogueira@aol.com and I will match you up for round 1. Given the tourney does not start until March, please feel free to get round one completed with your opponent early.

The means of selecting a game to play is quite simple. You select three of the five scenarios, 1-3 in your order of preference, along with the side you want to play. Your opponent does the same. Both of you send the selections to me. I match them up and determine who is playing what. Notify both players and off you go.

The Nor'easter is not a single elimination tournament. Everyone plays in every round as best they can. Once one undefeated player is left we have a winner. If the person they defeat is the only other undefeated player at that time, they get second. After that we use a series of tie breakers.

Thanks to all who would like to participate. You can sign up here: https://www.yankeegamers.org/noreaster/noreaster2021.php

Hello Nor'easter participants and would be participants. In an effort to make things easier for our players when the three tournament days of the Nor'easter arrive in March, we are endeavoring to try to get at least the first and possibly the first two rounds by the March 19th start date of the tournament proper. As such, we are already matching players up with the hope that they will be able to get the first round completed ASAP. Upon completion of round one, we will try to get round 2 in as well. Then there will only need to be one round per day from the 19th-21st.

As such, those of you who have signed up, I have begun to match with opponents. All who have signed up should be matched within a couple of days. In the email we will send out to you and your opponent, we will explain the process for picking round one selections and sides and sending them to us, so we can pair down the choices and get everyone matched up and ready to go.

For those who have not signed up, it is not too late, but the sooner the better. We are following the method used at the Albany tournament this year, which reduced the wear and tear on the players considerably. Just posting this here as it is a departure from the original plan. We will be in touch shortly with all the registered participants. If you have any questions, please email Carl at chnogueira@aol.com. You can signup for the Nor'easter Tournament at Yankee ASL (yankeegamers.org)

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Hi Folks. Nor'Easter 2021 is in full swing and if you haven't heard, we started Round 1 early. Our goal is to get Round 1 and Round 2 done before we start the actual tournament dates. Therefore we are no longer taking on more players for this year's tournament.

But please stay tuned as YASL pack #2 will be released soon in conjunction with the rest of the tournament in March. And we really hope we can be 'live' again in 2022. Roll low!
