Christ Evan on his show yesterday played the following set as "nine songs that every teenager should hear". What songs would you stick on your kids iPod so they could be exposed to some "good" music. Don't go for nine but try for four.

Del Shannon -Runaway
The Champs-Tequila
Mud - Tiger Feet
Tony Christie -Avenue and Alleyways
Petula Vlark - Downtown
The Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man
Bad Manners - Lip Up Fatty
The Pogues and The Dublinners - The Irish Rover
The Undertones - Teenage Kicks
The Beatles - OB La Di

So my attempt:

Martha and The Muffins - Echo Beach
Undertones - Teenage Kicks
Meatloaf - Bat out of hell
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
The Sweet - Ballroom Blitz
Simon and Garfunkle - Sound of Silence
The Box Tops - The Letter

Elvis Costello - Alison
Talking Heads - Life During Wartime
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
The Clash - Lost in the Supermarket
Devo - Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA

I know, five and not four; one of the lessons I'd like my kids to learn is not to sit in the box put out for them.
I'm impressed that you know Martha and the Muffins - I thought they were totally unknown outside of Toronto.

In no particular order:

1. AC/DC - Hell's Bells
2. ZZ Top - Blue Jean Blues
3. Metalica - Enter Sandman
4. The Eagles - Hotel California
5. Lynard Skynard - Simple Man
6. Ozzy Osbourne - You're No Different
7. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
8. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
9. Zakk Wylde & Black Label Society - Throwin' it all Away
10. George Thorogood & The Destroyers - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer
11. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
12. The Who - Eminence Front

If they need some stuff that's more off the beaten path, try this:

1. The Cranberries - Zombie
2. God is an Astronaut - All is Violent, All is Bright
3. Audioslave - Shadow on the Sun
4. AWOLNATION - Sail
5. Paul Brady & The Forest Rangers - Gimme Shelter
6. Moby - New Dawn Fades
7. Loreena Mckennitt - The Mummer's Dance
8. 3 Doors Down - Landing in London (with Bob Segar)
9. Godspeed You Black Emperor! - The Dead Flag Blues
10. Evanescence - Everybody's Fool
11. Haddaway - What is Love

Okay, I just put that last one on there to see if anyone was actually reading this...

Okay, I'll give it a go.

Hendrix-Castles made of sand
Doors-The End
Blackstone Singers-Jingle Dress sidestep competition
POD-Higher
Neil Young-The Needle and the Damage done
CSNY-Ohio
Zappa-Stinkfoot
Stevie Vaughn-Life by the drop
Yes-And you and I

Hmmm. That was easier than I thought. Still have a couple of ideas too. My youngest listens to a lot of different music and of course she likes the Beatles. She is also the only one of my children that likes Zappa. Of course I have to monitor what Zappa she listens to. No Dinah Mo Humm or Half a dozen provocative squats.

Here's my list.

Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone
Marty Robbins - El Paso
The Moody Blues - Forever Afternoon (Tuesday)
The Allman Brothers Band - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman
Glenn Miller - String of Pearls
The Eagles - Lyin' Eyes
Brian Eno - Deep Blue Day

I could probably name fifty songs, honestly. I play all this and more as much as possible for my 11 month old son. Hopefully some of it will stick as the years go by.

Much easier to choose bands than one song...

I'll fine tune my suggested areas of musical enlightenment for a teenager:
  1. Guitar Playing: Leslie West, Alvin Lee, Johnny Winters
  2. Bass " ": Felix Pappalardi, Lemmy Kilminster, John Entwistle
  3. Drum " ": Neil Peart, Dusty Beard, Bill Ward
  4. Vocal Range (Male/Female): Steve Marriot/Janis Joplin
  5. Mood Creation: Heroin-Velvet Underground, Run-Pink Floyd, Ziggy Stardust-David Bowie
  6. Underappreciated: Kris Kristofferson, Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce
Just my tastes if I wanted a teen to hear whom I felt best represented the above categories.
