A broken unit does not rout normally at night, but instead, always uses Low Crawl and is never eliminated for Failure to Rout.

... but still may not rout toward a Known enemy unit.

So, if broken, the unit would rather stay ADJACENT to an enemy unit instead of dropping the range from a unit, say, 10 hexes away?

If illumination or NVR makes that far away unit visible and know, yes. NRBH

Routing at night is not mandatory but if it chooses to rout it will always use Low Crawl and not towards a KEU.

I think the logic is lost here.
You can stay ADJ next to the unit that broke you but you can't move in the direction of an enemy unit???
Is it safer 40m from the enemy vs 120m?

You are a lot harder to see at night if you go to ground as opposed to moving.

Also...that's what the rules say.
But you can run around the Krauts next to your GI's when broken...
Well, Chap E. not much to expect here.

And if you are a broken, formerly BANZAI'ing japanese HS or Russian Human Waver, that ends up stacked with nasty GIs or Krauts, but you cannot rout away because everywhere you look you would move closer to KEUs, you stay in the hex and then try to withdraw in CC, right? Scary stuff!

That depends...there might not be a KEU in every direction.
