The Southern California ASL Club is proud to announce the upcoming release of Melee Pack I, a collection of six carefully designed and playtested scenarios. Over a year in the making, this represents the cumulative efforts of a large number of dedicated Southern California ASLers. It contains the following:

- 6 scenarios. Printed in full color. 5 of 6 feature OoB choices and/or FoW options for one or both sides. Trust me, these are novel and creative designs; we predict some of them will create a significant buzz upon release. In addition, as playtesting has been ongoing for a year, we have extreme confidence in the balance and playability of all six scenarios.
- 5 Scenario Cheat Sheets. Those familiar with our "Hit the Beach" newsletter will recognize these. If you haven't seen one before, the Scenario Cheat Sheets depict vehicle and Gun notes based on a scenario's OB, the date of the scenario and any special rules for the scenario.
- Cover, chatty blurbs, etc.
- We are reserving the Design Notes for a future newsletter (available to all club members, and eventually available to everyone for free on our website www.socalasl.com).

Price:
Club members: $5
Non-club members: $10

Initial availibility is limited to West Coast Melee IV attendees (this weekend, Jan 31-Feb 2). Details for ordering after WCM will be on our website within the next week. Stay tuned!!!

Scott,

We'd be willing I guess, but wouldn't that allow people to download that particular scenario for free? I'm open to suggestions for how to put a sample on our club website without giving it away. Maybe a fuzzy version or something?

Matt,

Just leave out the SSRs, VC, and number of units. I think what Scott is asking for is to see the type of format you guys are using. Lord knows there are tons of new formats these days.

For those interested, the WCM Melee Pack has a pornographic insert.

I won't be renewing my SOCAL membership next year.

Porno? From California? Who'd a thunk it! Now, if it's hetero, that would be news.

I have a design in this pack. While I haven't seen the finished product, from the pdf layouts I did see, it is very similar to the Coastal Fortress format.

Man, I really wish I was at WCM right now!

Guys,

I want to update you on the Melee Pack. We released it preliminarily at WCMIV, I think the reaction was very positive. More on the scenarios and how they were received later.

Ordering: We'll be working on getting PayPal and the Web info page up and running this week, once we shake off the West Coast Melee weekend cobwebs. Be patient, most of us who produced the pack were also responsible for running WCMIV, so we're kind of pooped this week. We'll let you know how to order when everything is up and running.

Pricing: I made a mistake in pricing, my goof entirely. The pack is $7 for club members, not $5. Sorry about that. It is still $10 for non-club members.

Format: Scott Faulk is right in saying that our scenario card format is very similar to the old Coastal Fortress format, but crisper and clearer. The CF cards looked great, but I'm assuming they kept the resolution low to speed downloading. Ours are so crisp that you can read the hex IDs! (BTW, I mentioned maybe putting a version on our webpage, but I got a cool reception from those who would actually have to do the work to implement this. If you guys really want it bad enuf I'll see what I can do, but I can't promise anything. :) )

The scenarios: 5 of 6 scenarios got some play this weekend, and fortunately not one typo, Q&A, balance issue or other problem came up. Phew! Not only that, but I heard almost unanimous endorsement from everybody regarding fun factor and balance. We're crossing our fingers that this sets the tone for the future.

Our goal for this scenario pack was to emphasize quality over everything else, and I humbly believe we achieved that. We currently have a number of other scenarios in the queue (many are close to completion by some standards), so we could have easily made this a 10 sceanario pack. But we limited it to six because that's all that we felt would be 100% ready by West Coast Melee.

I think we made the right decision - quality always wins out over quantity in my book.

Oh, and sorry Lance, no porno in Melee Pack I :( I suggest trying your local 7-11. Or the Internet, I hear it's free there.

More later. I'll let you guys know when PayPal and the website are up.

The Southern California ASL Club has just made our latest newsletter available for free online at our website. Click the 'Hit the Beach' link to get to our newsletter section; look for V8N1.

This issue includes Design Notes for Melee Pack 1. At one point we considered putting these notes into the Pack itself. But we decided that it was more economical for everybody to publish it in a free electronic version. We hope you enjoy these scenarios as much as we enjoyed making them.

There is plenty more in this issue as well: WCM results, a book review, tips, a Robert Feinstein biography, and more. 14 total pages of ASL madness!

BTW, Melee Pack 1 is still available. See our website for details. Price is $11 domestic, $14 international; this includes shipping. Payment accepted by PayPal, check or money order.

Sorry, I double posted my previous message. While we can modify posts, we can't delete them. So I have to think of something to say here... How about: "my favorite scenario in the pack is 'The Last Wolves' Tooth!'"
